Beautiful location in the hills of West Yorkshire. This quintessential grade 2 listed cottage bridges contemporary with character; wooden beams, open fire and wood burning stove. The cottage is south-facing, greeting the rising sun with stunning views over the valley and its beautiful woods.
This is the perfect location for a getaway, simply relaxing or rambling in the countryside; situated between The Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, and Lake District.
The space
Nestled in the heart of rural West Yorkshire, Woodlea Cottage is a beautifully preserved Grade II listed home that perfectly balances historic charm with modern comfort. This characterful retreat offers a true sense of escape, surrounded by countryside views and timeless Yorkshire beauty.
Set beneath the landmark Victoria Tower on Castle Hill, the cottage enjoys a glorious south-facing position near the historic village of Almondbury, one of Yorkshire’s oldest recorded settlements. Draped in wisteria, Woodlea’s stone exterior hints at the warmth and elegance that lie within.
Inside, you’ll find original mullioned windows, exposed beams, and two welcoming fireplaces—one with a crackling wood-burning stove and the other an open hearth. Thoughtfully updated throughout, the cottage blends its rich heritage with contemporary comfort to create a space that feels both luxurious and homely.
There are two inviting sitting rooms—one with a piano and open fire, the other perfect for relaxing by the stove after a day exploring. The well-equipped kitchen and adjoining dining area provide the ideal spot for anything from a hearty breakfast to a candlelit dinner.
Outdoors, guests can unwind in the sunny front patio garden or the quiet rear courtyard, both ideal for alfresco dining or simply soaking up the scenery. With ample off-road parking, a utility room, and four beautifully styled bedrooms—three king-size (one with an en suite) and a twin—Woodlea Cottage is perfectly suited for families, couples, or friends looking for a memorable Yorkshire getaway.
Beyond the cottage, you’ll find a wealth of places to explore. Enjoy a lively night out in Holmfirth at the Picture Drome, or discover the charm of Honley, Slaithwaite, and Marsden. A little further afield, Hebden Bridge and Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters, offer a perfect day trip. Families will love Cannon Hall Farm and Pigs in the Wood, while art lovers can visit The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Hepworth Gallery, and Salts Mill.
Whether you’re seeking countryside calm, family adventures, or a touch of Yorkshire heritage, Woodlea Cottage is a truly special place to stay.

From the host
Woodlea cottage is situated in a wooded green belt valley with few properties, there are neighbours either side one being an old weavers cottage like Woodlea, the other a more modern large detached house. The village of Almondbury which is referred to in the 'Doomsday Book, but dates back much further over 4,000 years! The cottage is situated beneath Castle Hill and it's famous 'Victoria Tower' to commemorate Queen Victoria residing on the throne over 60 years. The village has several shops, a couple of churches and pubs a couple of miles away.
