You’ll have the house to yourself.
Get away from it all while drinking in the Mayan character of this very special property. Quiet and secluded, yet just minutes away from civilization, this is a tranquil spot to recharge.

The space
Nestled on the slopes just across the bay from Santiago and with a spectacular view of the Lake and surroundings is the acreage called Orchids on the Lake. It's a quiet natural retreat and a very special place to experience the lake.
Secluded and yet close to civilization, the property is just a 5 minute boat ride across the picture perfect bay to Santiago and connecting boats to all other parts of the lake.

The main floor with the living room, kitchen, and full bathroom was constructed with traditional thick stone walls and vintage wood from the old Guatemalan railway. The fireplace is a focal point of the living room.

The upper floor has two spacious bedrooms and another full bathroom. And on both floors there are verandas and comfie furniture to relax into and enjoy the incredible ever changing views. The houses is 100% off the grid and powered by solar but in a way that you won't notice.

There are no restaurants or stores, only gardens on this side of the lake. But the kitchen is fully equipped and stocked with basics and there's a great market in Santiago for fresh picked fruit and produce, chicken and meat.

The on site host couple will help you organize your sightseeing and any special interests you have. They will be on the property but in a small house nearby and can give you complete privacy if you wish or all the help you'd like.

After your days exploring on the lake, the property is the perfect place to come back to. Relax in a comfortable chair on the veranda and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Guest access
You will have access to the entire house. The owner or host couple will be in a casita nearby but out of sight. We have a TV with tons of DVD's to watch, a small library of books to read, and feel free to wander about the property and all the gardens.

Other things to note
We are not the place to be if you are looking for bars and nightclubs, although you can make your own fun on site. There are no restaurants on this side of the Lake. The idea is to enjoy the natural beauty of the gardens and views and kick back in and out of the house. If you are out and about on the Lake during the day, it's a wonderful place to come back to. Make a great dinner in our fully equipped kitchen and light a fire in the fireplace or enjoy the stars sitting comfortably on our verandas.
Because the systems have changed recently, you will need to access internet through your Smartphone. If your phone is unlocked, just buy a chip for Guatemala in any town, (Tigo has the best signal) choose a plan, and purchase the amount of GB's you think you'll use.
A trip to town with the water taxi will cost a minimum of $3. Above 2 guests, they charge $1.25 U.S. each person. This price includes your luggage or groceries, whatever you bring with you.

Santiago Atitlán, Solola, Guatemala

Our neighborhood is quiet and serene most of the time. Gardeners arrive in the morning, crossing by cayuko (local form of canoes) over from Santiago to their properties. They work until midafternoon, at which time they'll paddle back to town.
We do hear the music when there is something big happening in town. But generally, the major sound is just the singing of the many birds around the property.

World traveling Canadian who fell in love with Central America and decided to stay. I lived 8 years in Panama and then relocated to Lake Atitlan after several trips here. That was 10 years ago. I found my dream property and spent several years building. I still can't get over the view. It's incredible! I love being surrounded by gardens and Nature and serenity.

And, we leave you a little manual with tips and info on the area and other details about the house and property. We are here to answer your queries but if you want privacy, you'll hardly see us.
If you are going out for the day, we'd be happy to come in to the house and do a light cleaning. If you'd prefer we don't, please let us know.
