The space

In 1941 the Waimarino District Health Board built a nurses home in Raetihi to accommodate the staff of the Waimarino Hospital. The hospital had opened in 1922 back when Raetihi was a thriving timber town and the Raetihi-Pipiriki road was busy with horses and bullocks carting logs.

The Waimarino hospital was a an important place employing three full time doctors, plenty of nurses and a full time gardener. With its perfectly manicured gardens and huge oak trees, the hospital stood proudly overlooking the town and had arguably the best views of Mt Ruapehu.

In the early years, farmers from valleys such as the Mangapurua on the Whanganui River (and home of the Bridge to Nowhere) would travel over 50km on foot or by horseback to have their logging wounds tended to. The hospital even had a maternity wing where women would ride a horse for two days to give birth here.

But as the trees were felled and forestry diminished so did Raetihi’s population. During the great depression, farmers walked off their land. Some of the service stores on Raetihi’s main street were affected and over a period of time almost all 11 timber mills were closed.

Later, rural hospitals were closed and facilities, as well as staff, were moved to New Zealand’s main cities. The nurses home was bought by one of the Doctors during which time the current owner Sandy Waters (aged 9 at the time) stayed here. Seventeen years later Sandy bought the Old Nurses Home and has been renovating and running it as guest accommodation ever since.

Guest access

Set within 5 acres of park-like grounds, The Old Nurses Home is situated 1km from Raetihi’s historic main street with shops, café’s, a museum and NZ’s oldest Theatre. We are 30 minutes from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (transport departs daily), Bridge to Nowhere jet boat tours, and Mt Ruapehu's Turoa ski area. We are the start and finishing point for the Whanganui River canoe journeys. Several mountain bike trails are just a short drive or shuttle service away.

Facilities include a large, sunny, north facing kitchen/lounge which opens onto an extensive outdoor entertainment area with a big open fire, BBQ, wood fired pizza oven and magnificent views of Mt Ruapehu.

Seperate male/female bathrooms each have three toilets and three showers, plus there’s a laundry, a drying room and secure mountain bike storage.

In rooms we provide a full bedding including white fluffy towels. During winter we operate a European style central heating system plus the lounge has a fireplace (wood supplied), 50” plasma TV, SKY (with sports channels), DVD player and a stereo.

Outside we have a kid’s playground, trampoline, mini-petanque, a pet goat, a miniature horse, The Snowy Train and a bouncy castle (weather permitting). There is an outside spa pool surrounded by rocks and palm trees with mountain views. We have plenty of off-street car parking.

I spent one night at Snowy Waters on my way from Auckland to Wellington and had one of the best sleeps! Sandy is a wonderful host and while her lodge is a 'work in progress' it is warm and comfortable and charming. I will definitely be back.

Very friendly interaction and warm welcoming. The stay was ok, as reasonably priced and good equipped kitchen and Chill-out area. Also the hot pot is nice after a long hike. The facility is under rennovation as major parts of it have aged a bit. Between the rooms you can hear pretty much everything, which makes it a bit non-optimal if people are leaving early, which is actually very common, as many people start their hiking early (standing up like 5ish). So not a place to sleep long, but a perfect place if you travel with multiple people. There will be enough space to host all of you, reasonably priced. Overall ok.

Great and cozy place to stay, we really recommend it! Big and well equiped kitchen, outside area and garden with BBQ and Pizza oven and fire place in the lounge. We stayed in an ensuite double room in "the villa". Sandy is a lovely and super nice host:)

Me and my boyfriend had a great experience in this place! They welcomed us and explained us everything about the crossing and how to reach the place where the crossing starts, and the morning after we had everything ready, even if it was early in the morning for having breackfast. The room was nice and clean and the common areas were perfectly tidy and clean.. You can just relax in the huge living room and watch tv or just drink a tea. Everybody was friendly and smiling!
