Funky older cottage on private island. Spectacular water views all round, yet secluded from other people. 100 year old base with add-ons over the years, now renovated while maintaining original charm, Pet friendly, great Canadian cottage experience! WEEK-LONG BOOKINGS ONLY.
Bookings are (mostly) restricted to FULL-WEEK rentals, Saturday to Saturday. 5 DAY RENTAL MINIMUM. Overview The cottage is a wilderness paradise. It's a very special place to us! We own the whole island on which it is built (not large, perhaps one acre) but it's very peaceful. It sits across a bay looking out to the main lake and also has a huge shallow back bay behind it. Good fishing in the lake if you like that (I'm not a fisherman), canoeing, kayaking, sailing, boating. Wildlife includes herons, loons, ducks, geese, turkey vultures, turtles, mink, muskrat, beavers, bullfrogs, the occasional deer, garter snakes, dragonflies, monarch butterflies and lots of bird life. Canadian wilderness at its best. Location The cottage is located on Big Rideau Lake. It is located approximately 20 minutes southwest of Perth, Ontario, on a bay on the north side of the lake called Horseshoe Bay. It is a little bit southwest of Murphy’s Point Provincial Park. It takes about 90 minutes to get to the cottage from central Ottawa, including a 10 minute canoe ride. I’ll send you detailed directions as to how to get there if you decide to rent. Style of cottage The core of the cottage is almost 100 years old. Over the last ten years we have been renovating and expanding the cottage extensively, but it is not our intention at any stage to convert it to a modern house. Our approach is to do everything we can to minimize the impact of our activities on the landscape and to assist the ecology of the island and the area. In the interests of full disclosure, I have to admit that the cottage does sometimes have ‘wee beasties’ such as mice, spiders, daddy-long-legs and the occasional wood roach. They come and go in cycles, you may see them or you may not. If you want to get away and commune with nature you can’t always control how nature communes back with you. THIS IS A FUNKY OLDER COTTAGE. IF YOU THINK A COTTAGE MEANS PROTECTION FROM MOTHER NATURE, A DISHWASHER AND AIR CONDITIONING, THEN THIS IS NOT FOR YOU! One of the 'wee beasties' that MAY show up is wood roaches. They only showed briefly twice last year but one of the times resulted in a one-star rating from the guests and a temporary de-listing from Airbnb because they were described as cockroaches and that the place was thereore unclean. They are NOT the latter and he cottage is thoroughly cleaned for every visit but this is one of the 'risks' of comuning with nature that I describe elsewhere. I hesitatd in adding this paragraph because it is unlikely you will see any, but I do not want to get another one-star rating (which was totally unfair, especially since they liked everything else about the cottage) because of the WOOD roaches It is ideal for individuals and families who want peace and quiet and relaxed play. Although it can accommodate large groups, it is not designed to be a party palace and we do not rent to people whose only idea of fun involves loud music and intrusive water activities. Because it is an old structure, some of the facilities are relatively primitive. We have hot and cold running water, but there is a limit to the amount of hot water that can be generated at any one time. The environmental toilet works very well, but also requires a little bit of understanding and water conservation measures. Climate change and water supply This is a new paragraph promted by an unusually cold October. If you make a late fall booking, please note that it is possible that the water might be turned off to avoid freezing. Getting water from the lake and heating it on the wood stove is easy enough, but may be too 'primitive' for some people, and it would mean the shower is off. Normally this might only be an issue from November on, but with climate change it appears to be a possibility even in October, so please consider your fall bookings accordingly. With hotter summers likely, you should add 2°C to "average" seasonal norms. Global warming may also result in warmer springs and falls. Layout The cottage is about 1,200 square feet, centred on a large family room with a cathedral ceiling. The front porch looks down to the main lake while the kitchen overlooks the back bay. It has three bedrooms, one of which is a loft that also has a view over the whole back bay. It’s got a large kitchen where three cooks can work concurrently! It can easily sleep six and with other futon beds, the capacity gets up to nine before you even start talking tents or mattresses. And we have recently built a ‘bunkie’ that can accommodate another couple of people or perhaps all the kids. However this size of group has to be negotiated since we are concerned with the capacity of the island to handle a lot of people, For example, large groups early in the season are not possible since one small shower is really not sufficient and the lake isn't warm enough for bathing then. Facilities It has a Sunmar environmental toilet, easy to use, minimal smell and we do all the upkeep. Cell phone is somewhat limited (1-2 bars most phones), so may restrict internet junkies. No air-conditioning but good breezes off the lake. There’s a wood stove for heating if needed. Other facilities include a propane barbeque, a fire pit, two docks, good swimming from the dock though a bit weedy, small beach as well (see below), flower gardens, a vegetable garden, an installed labyrinth (Vanessa's specialty), two hammocks and a large library with lots of good reading material. There’s a wind up radio but no TV. The cottage has decks all around which means you can always find sun or shade in which to sit depending on your preference. We have two canoes, two kayaks, a small sailing boat and a rowing boat. The back bay is shallow but out front big boats have no problem for docking. Island living There are both advantages and disadvantages to living on an island. Advantages Ø No neighbours Ø Privacy and quiet Ø No need to tether pets Ø Lots of shoreline Ø Many different types of landscapes Disadvantages Ø Time of canoe ride (8 minutes) Ø Transportation of food and drink Ø Transportation of building materials, tools and repair items! Ø Isolation in case of accident Ø Travel to the island after dark Children There are lots of things for the children to do, but primarily non-electronic!. No music system ,no television. We don’t mind other people bringing these, just don’t expect them to be supplied. There are lots of games and puzzles, swimming masks and flippers, a badminton set, climbing, fort building, frog-spotting, crayfish baiting (use bacon!) and other old time honoured cottage pursuits. We have built a basic tree house (June 2014)! Swimming The level of the lake is regulated, and can change over the course of the season by up to 30 inches. Thus diving off the main dock is possible until August but after that may become less so if the level of the lake is considerably down. The water is clear and good, but off the main dock is weedy. We have a small beach a little further down the island and from this you can walk out with no weeds. The sand is fairly gritty (we provide water shoes) and the beach itself is only exposed at the end of the year when the water level is at its lowest. I would rate the quality of the swimming as good but not excellent. Fishing Big Rideau Lake is part of the Rideau Canal System that stretches between the Ottawa River at Canada's Capital, Ottawa, and Lake Ontario at Kingston, a total of 202 kms or 125 miles. Throughout the Rideau Canal System, you can expect to find excellent smallmouth bass and largemouth bass fishing, and in certain areas, walleye, pike and muskellunge fishing. The fishing is supposed to be good in the main lake, and we have had some guests catch fish from the island itself. Boating Small boats may be launched from the landing dock, otherwise there is a public launch about half a kilometre away from the cottage. If you bring your own motor boat you can travel long distance both up and down the lake. You can also make long voyages by our two kayaks or two canoes. Our son has been to the far side of the lake to Portland, but some caution is required as the weather on the main lake can occasionally get extremely rough (six foot waves with whitecaps). It is almost always relatively calm within the bay which can only occasionally lead to problems in getting the sailboat out! Marijuana The cottage is located 30 minutes from Smiths Falls which is the headquarters of Canopy Growth Corporation, better known as Tweed, the largest marijuana producer in Canada. For guests from outside of Canada who wish to buy Canada's newest legal recreational drug (!), it is likely that there will be a retail outlet in that town. Tours of their facility may also be available. They are growing like crazy (pun intended!), 800 jobs created so far. Since some information is lackingabout how and where retail sales will operate, I'll provide you with up-to-date information when you book. Rates We use the cottage ourselves usually in the early/late parts of the year. In July and August we prefer to rent it by the week, Saturday to Saturday. September is best if you can make it, no one else around, superb colours, great weather and the best rates for week stays. A great location for homeschooling in a different environment. We have rented it as early as April and as late as November, but please realize that if the weather gets cold enough to freeze the pipes then we may not be able to provide a running water system. Buckets from the lake and hot water from a large saucepan on the wood stove works really well, but it's not for everyone! We have lots of arts supplies as well as metal and wood potential sculpture material. You are urged to indulge your creativity! Library There is an extensive library in place, heavy on the science fiction (Azimov, Piers Anthony, but also with complete sets of Tom Clancy (John Ryan series), Georgette Heyer (the original, well written and well-researched regency romance author), Stieg Larson (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Arthur Ransome (kid's English author), Matt Helm series, Agatha Christie, Harry Potter and many others. Health The island is great for pets because you can just let them run free. But although we vacuum thoroughly, if you react to pet hair etc., we can't always make it sterile enough that your allergies won't be triggered. We ask that you bring the bedding you require. If we provide it, there is a further charge of $100 per week. Well trained pets are allowed, please clean up after them. No smoking inside the cottage. The cottage has a good selection of spices, condiments and other basics but we ask that you replace anything you finish or let us know what needs replenishing. There is a selection of other food there that can also be used for emergencies! WINTER STAYS Yes there is a wood stove and yes there is pre-chopped wood for it but depending when you want it, the place may not be your ideal winter retreat for two much more practical reasons 1) the cottage is not insulated and could get REALLY cold 2) because it is on an island you can’t get across to it in December/early January and again in March. At those times there is ice but not thick enough to walk on and yet still too thick to break through in a canoe. Fletch Contact information Owners: Michael Fletcher Perth, SW of Ottawa, Ontario
  • All super - nice hosts, great location - exceptional experience

  • Such a wonderfully, peaceful place! A great, outdoorsy feel with loons calling, fish to catch, a beautiful blue heron and total peace and relaxation. The house is just as Michael describes. We took our pontoon boat and went to Portland and Westport. The dogs loved every minute on the boat and running free on the island. People we did meet around the area were so friendly and very helpful too.

  • We had a wonderful time staying on the island. Everything is accurately described in the listing — if you understand that this is a very old cottage, and don’t have unrealistic expectations, you should have a good time. The bay was very quiet and peaceful, the views from the cottage were beautiful, and the swimming was good. Michael was very pleasant and easy to deal with.

    Shawn2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Michael’s place. The cottage is true to the AirBNB description - the negatives are that there are a small number of bugs and there is the composting toilet to deal with. If you are OK with those things, you will really love this place. We found that the photos in the ad don’t capture how nice the place is - the living area is beautiful - full of light and stocked with absolutely everything needed for a relaxing cottage vacation. There are many small touches that make your stay very comfortable. The view onto the quiet bay of the lake is a million dollar view, and if ever you get tired of that, there is the view on the other side of the island onto a marsh full of lily pads. We really appreciated the cottage location - it is on a quiet bay, so the water tends to be calm and there are very few motor boats, and the neighbours are relatively far away. We spent a lot of time swimming, canoeing and kayaking and the conditions were great. Even though it is on the island, it wasn’t difficult to canoe or take the rowboat to pick up visitors or take a day trip. Michael was very good with communication before the rental - he sent us very clear instructions on how to get to the cottage, and met us (in the rowboat!) to bring us to the island. He was flexible to alter the meet up time on the day to avoid a rainshower. There are certainly enough outdoor chairs on the island for you, but we brought a few extra folding chairs with us and appreciated having them - that allowed us to not move chairs around so much. We were very happy with our week on the island.

  • Rustic, charming, peaceful - a true Canadian cottage experience. The views of the the lake won't disappoint. I highly recommend a stay on Potato Island to folks who don't mind insects, snakes, a bit of dust, a compost toilet. We hope to visit again one day.

  • Where to start? Micheal was friendly and generous and gave us a tour of the cabin, island and waterway on our way to the cabin. We had 3 generations of family enjoy this place with kids as young as 5 and grandparents in their 70's. There was a fire pit for night roasts, and a stove, microwave and coffee maker for the morning. There were Hammocks for reading, water toys, 2 kayaks, canoes, and a row boats. We had a great weekend and I am already looking at weeks in the summer to book again.

  • A nice little cottage on an island that's great for relaxation and making fond memories. Mike provides a lot of activities for you to do so you'll never find yourself bored, even if you are stuck indoors on a rainy day. He goes out of his way too to help you transport your things to his island which I very much appreciated. Thank you so much Mike!

  • This was our second stay with Susan at the Ottylake Vacation Suite, and just as grand as the first stay! Susan was a great host, we especially appreciated her insights on the region. As before, we were in the region on business; it was cool, rainy December weather, much like our stay in November, yet we were still warm and comfortable. This would also be a perfect place to stay for a summer holiday: it has its own private entrance facing towards the lake, with a dock on deep, clean waterfront. Once again, thank you Susan!

  • We had a great stay! Susan was out of town, John (co-host) greeted us almost as soon as we drove in. We were in the region on business; it was cool, rainy November weather, yet we were still warm and comfortable – the electric fireplace helped with that! This would also be a perfect place to stay for a summer holiday: it has its own private entrance facing towards the lake, with a dock on deep, clean waterfront. Susan had left a bottle of wine for us, a very nice touch and greatly appreciated!

  • This is a magical space along a quiet stretch of the Rideau. The double bed is very high, and they’ve thoughtfully provided a step stool to help you up. It’s a great cottage, well appointed and clean, with welcoming hosts.

  • Only steps away from the beautiful Rideau River, we were comfy, cozy and relaxed! We thought it would be hard to do without wifi, but cell phones provide data if you really need it. The cottage has everything else. Thanks to Geoff and Valerie.

  • A great place to stay in Perth. Sparkling clean and cozy. Carolyn had lit the wood stove prior to our evening arrival, which was a welcome sight at the end of a travelling day!

  • We had a great stay at The Den! This place is sparkling clean and has an amazing shower! The wood stove is a very nice touch which keeps the apartment toasty warm. The kitchen and the bedroom are very spacious. The bed was super comfortable. Being able to walk downtown was great as it only takes 5-10 minutes depending on where you are going. We appreciated all the extras Carolyn left out for us. We highly recommend The Den, it's a wonderful alternative to a hotel room!

  • What a perfect little get away spot! It is located well in terms of accessing downtown but you really do feel like you are out in the country. The wood stove kept us toasty warm and was just the perfect addition to a snowy weekend. Carolyn was so lovely and communicative. The place was clean and had everything we needed! Will for sure visit again!

  • My husband & I stayed at Carolyn’s place for a mini weekend getaway and we were very impressed. The place was absolutely spotless and we were pleasantly surprised by its charming character as well as the size of the space. Carolyn was very helpful and responsive to messages whenever we had questions. She was also able to provide us with some great local dining options. We would recommend her place to anyone staying in Perth area. It’s also super close to downtown. Thank you Carolyn!

Charming Off-Grid Cottage for you to "unplug" for the weekend and enjoy swimming, paddling, and hiking. It's an elevated camping experience with no plumbing or electricity! A quiet and private lakeside retreat.

Includes the use of dishes, silverware, cookware, propane flat stove (for outdoor use), BBQ, linens, canoe, two adult life jackets, one doggy life jacket (80lbs+), paddles, row boat with oars, oil lamps, small flashlights and 1 five gallon water jug. Enjoy the use of the full outdoors with horseshoes pits, a fire pit, bocce and frisbee. Cuddle in the two-person hammock that overlooks the lake or enjoy coffee or tea with beautiful views. There is a new outhouse located just outside of the main structure for washroom use.
Our cottage located beside Mill Pond Conservation Area (in Portland, Rideau Lakes, Ontario) is available for you to enjoy completely off-grid. No plumbing or electricity! On a private half acre with waterfront! Shoreline is weedy, but lake is great for fishing or swimming from a boat. Close to 11km of hiking trails at Mill Pond and about a 20min drive from Rock Dunder. No motor restrictions on lake and a 10min walk from closest boat launch.
  • Lovely quiet cottage. We brought two dogs and there was plenty of room for them to run around. There is a neighbour, but you dont see him because he is behind the cottage. He was fine with the dogs running around and was friendly but respected our privacy. Great stars at night.

  • Communication with Morgan was right to the point, no surprises. The cabin is very basic (as I was expecting) but clean and neat. If you are looking for a convenience or comfort of average cottage, then it's not for you. From the other hand if you want to experience simple, basic life in nature with roof over your head and bed to sleep then I would recommend it. I spend there 4 weekdays in September. It was peaceful, quiet, just sounds of nature and calming view of a small lake.

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is pleased to offer the rare opportunity for guests to sleep in a caboose for an authentic railroader experience. Curl up in our comfortable pull-down beds with fresh linens and relax in the quiet glow of the lantern. This is a 1947 CN wooden caboose. Please note this is not a hotel but a unique glamping experience.
The inside of the Caboose is fit with electricity, yet still has the original setup. This includes three foldout benches that become beds, a raised area known as a "Cupola", a writing desk, a stove and a sink. Please note that the stove and sink are no longer functional, but there are electrical outlets provided. A small kitchenette (fridge, sink, microwave), showers and washrooms are available inside the museum station.
We are within short walking distance to the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), many local restaurants and shops, picturesque parks and trails, and our lovely downtown area.
  • Unique experience

    Louis Philippe2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is a unique and really fun place to stay. And, a tour of the museum and the yard is included. I'd go back in a ❤️ beat so I think that says it all. Thanks to Leisa and her team, and John, and Tony. I'm sure they will all make your stay as special as they made mine.

    John2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • What you expect: experiencing what it would have been like to work on a train with the overnight stay! Amazingly unique and the museum itself is a treasure trove of history.

    Jennifer2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Give it a try. It is a very different overnight experience. Not exactly rustic, but it makes you work a bit to get the best out of it.

    Randy2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Make sure you read the listing thoroughly and you’ll have a wonderful time. This is not a hotel. It’s an authentic historical experience of staying aboard a caboose. The beds are wacky but still comfortable to sleep in, and likely in better shape than the brakemen who had to use them in 1942. The restored station where all the amenities are is gorgeous. The staff were friendly very helpful. It’s an experience my son and I will never forget.

    Jon2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • We loved visiting the caboose and learning about life in a caboose The staff were all friendly. The conductor served breakfast in his uniform. Our on-site host, John, was amazingly helpful and a wealth of authentic knowledge about train life in Canada because he worked on the rails for many years. He took us on a personal tour even riding the handcart. We could have listened to him talking all day. Note for light sleepers: there is a warehouse nearby with trucks going in/out overnight but there is a fan to turn on for white noise. We found everything we needed in walking distance - groceries, restaurants, canal with locks, parks, waterfalls, swans and swimming.

    Barbara2019-08-06T00:00:00Z
  • Very interesting and novel lodging, and nearby Smiths Falls is great for many reasons. Don't expect a hotel room, and be prepared to be fascinated about the history of local trains.

  • Faith & Richard were very kind, quick and responsive. We appreciated their local tips and suggestions - if you’re looking for a quiet and beautiful place to stay they are highly recommended, we appreciated all the little touches including having water and tea available in the room for us, the room was decorated beautifully and the candles in the fireplace really set for a calm and serene atmosphere in the evening. It’s close to the centre of Perth and walking distance to some awesome food. Would recommend for a couples getaway for sure!

And a good location close to the center of town. I plan on staying again in the future when I visit Perth again. Thank you, Faith and Richard, for providing me with a nice place to stay.

When you think of the ideal lake getaway, you might conjure images of gorgeous views, good swimming off of the dock, paddling a kayak or fishing from a row boat, and of course, roasting marshmallows at the fire pit. Barber’s Pointe offers all of this and more. Nestled on a point, the view is truly 180°. Facing west puts the stunning sunsets in full view. At just a couple of paces from the water, you can't get any closer than this. Check us out on Instagram @OtterLakeCottage.
The first thing you’ll notice is the expansive and unobstructed west facing view across Otter Lake. Nearly the entire front of the cabin is windows. What makes this especially spectacular is that the water is literally a couple of steps from the deck. As beautiful as the sunsets are, if you find yourself up early, head to the north side of the property and look east. You might just catch a sunrise. The layout of this early 1980’s design has the bedrooms in the back, which provides great privacy if you have guests or little ones napping. The front of the cottage is a wide open concept with a ridge beam spanning the full length. The three-piece bathroom has a modest stand up shower, sink, and toilet on septic. The entire cabin is appropriately clad in knotty pine shiplap. At night, enjoy the fire pit, bordered by upright composite Adirondack chairs. Accompanying the seating is a Nordik-style fire bowl for making smores or just gazing at the flames. Enjoy the dark, or turn on the outside lights to fully illuminate the fire pit area with Edison bulb string lighting. There are two good-quality kayaks for your use during your stay. You can launch these from the gradual entry behind the fire pit to cruise the lake and take in the bucolic scenery. There’s also an old row boat, known as Woodrow, which you can use to fish the bay (see “Other things to note” below). There's also a large foam swimming mat, affectionately known as the grilled cheese. It's a slice of fun for adults and kids alike. For those chilly spring and fall evenings, turn on the wall mounted pellet stove for a natural and clean heat. Ignition is as simple as the press of a button. Enjoy the flames as you stay cozy with a book, board game, or conversation. There is also a flat screen television with BluRay and DVD player, along with a wide and eclectic selection of movies for rainy days.
  • We had a wonderful time staying at the cottage. The view was beautiful and the location made it easy to relax and enjoy it. Lots of activities to do in the area and so much to see.

  • Property is just as described, beautiful sunsets nice location very quiet and relaxing and some good fishing.

    Chuck2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • Incredible spot. Exactly what I was hoping for in the space. It was beautiful inside and out. Serene, special to be so close to the water, gorgeous space. We loved the kayaks, wood, deck, fireplace, all of it. Neighbors to the left are close in proximity but the property is so private we would barely have known they were there. Sunsets are spectacular. It was a total joy to be there and I would go back in a heartbeat.

    Lori2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • This was the best cottage we’ve ever rented. It had everything we needed and more. Clean, comfy, cozy, beautiful sunsets & rises, the lake water was really clear, great places to sit and relax throughout the day, comfortable beds etc. etc...

    Carol2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful cottage. Glass railing and new deck provided a wonderful view of this clear lake. We enjoyed the kayaks, dock, hammock, beautiful fire pit area and swim pad. Very clean and easy communication with Host.

  • My wife and our 1 year old son stayed at Josh’s cottage for 2 nights. It was a peaceful and relaxing getaway we needed as a family. The lake is quiet, calm, and beautiful. Great for swimming! The cottage was very clean and well maintained. Very baby friendly with toys and options to keep our son busy! Josh was attentive and quick to respond to any of our questions. We are very happy we chose his cottage for our stay!

    Annabelle2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very comfortable and clean apartment in the heart of Perth - only minutes to everything by foot - with parking in the garage. The beds are comfortable, lovely linen, very cozy comfortable living room, and a well-outfitted kitchen. Lots of little extras, which we really appreciated. The host is very responsive to requests, and answers all questions within minutes. I highly recommend this place, except to those with mobility issues (about 10+ steps up to get into the apartment). Thanks John!

    Annabelle2020-01-27T00:00:00Z
  • John's place is my go to place whenever I am staying in Perth. Every visit is 5 star plus. I always look forward to returning to this wonderfully bright, sparkling clean, welcoming space. Highly recommend!

    Daintry2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • John's place was BEAUTIFUL - more so than the pictures conveyed - and a comfortable, cozy space for our short stay in Perth. Ours was a last-minute visit, and John was very prompt in his replies, which was helpful for us. His space was in a great location to be able to walk everywhere, and we were grateful for the garage parking. The bed (we only used one of the two rooms) was very comfortable for both my husband and myself. A wonderful stay!

    Tali2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • John was a fantastic host. He replied promptly to all our email questions. The place was very clean and check in was easy. We loved the extra touches in the kitchen which saved us from having to buy the basics on arrival. The bottle of wine was also much appreciated! Fantastic experience in Perth - we have already recommended this place to our family.

Centrally located, comfortable air conditioned home with great hardwood floors. Only a few minutes walk to several restaurants, banquet halls, pubs, shops, farmer's market, antique shops, parks, etc. The Town of Perth is friendly and offers so much... you will fall in love with it! Note: This home has two rooms, you need to book separately as follow: "Chez Marcel" has a Double Size bed. " Perth-fect Place" has a Queen Size bed. Looking forward to hosting you. Marcel
  • A lovely location in the heart of Perth, paired with Marcel's wonderful hospitality. Definitely a great place to stay.

    Eric2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • Marcel was absolutely amazing. He was very sociable and kind and the house was extremely clean and cozy. Great location and Marcel was the life of the party!

    Ali2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Marcel was a great host who went out of his way to make my stay there comfortable.

    Neil2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • I did not end up staying at Marcel's place because my plans changed last minute. However, I would highly recommend booking with Marcel based on my experience with him as a host. Leading up to my stay he was very communicative and responded promptly. He really made the entire process simple and stress free. I can't speak on behalf of the place itself but based on my communication experience with Marcel I expect nothing but outstanding hospitality. I highly recommend Marcel's place and would stay again (or I guess for the first time!) with him if I am ever back in Perth.

    Marisa2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Marcel was a great host, even when he was travelling out of town he made sure there was someone we could access in person if we had questions. Perfect spot to stay, was easy to walk to restuarants, pubs, Stuart park, farmers market and more. I would definitely stay again!

    Jill2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • Great stay at Marcel’s for a wedding! Perfect location in Perth, the wedding was at Code’s Mill, 5 min walk away. Marcel was very friendly - we weren’t there long but it was perfect for us.

    Brittany2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • I was wary of our first airb&b that would not be a full apartment to ourselves, but it was easily one of the best experiences I've had. Marcel is helpful, friendly and considerate, and very knowledgeable avout Perth

  • Jody and Justin’s cottage was a great place to stay at. The cottage is full of character and nostalgic feelings. It was very clean and Hody and Justin were very responsive from the very beginning of the booking. The views from the main room are spectacular and I can only imagine what it’s like in the summer. The cottage is very welcoming and cozy. It is not far from a couple provincial parks if anyone is looking to go for hikes or runs. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone.

    Miguel2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The whole experience was wonderful - from host communication to location and the space itself. I'd return in a heartbeat. The cottage was super tidy and clean. The kitchen had everything needed for meal prep: pots, pans, plates, cutlery, toaster, microwave, Kerig and auto drip coffee machines. The entire cottage is carpeted - with what I personally think are the most attractive carpets to ever come out of the 1970s. The bathroom floor is tiled, but the kitchen area is carpeted too. I've never seen such clean and well kept rugs. Another reviewer suggested the property is suitable for off-leash dogs, but I wouldn't recommend letting untrained, young or excitable dogs off-leash here in the winter. The property has fencing along the side, but not across the driveway or along the lake. To other big-city-folks: I'd recommend surveying/walking the property down to the lake edge before letting the pup run around - especially in snowy and icy conditions. Land and water look identical when covered in snow! Lastly, don't forget the kindling and dry firewood for the wood stove :)

    Jaime Lyn2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great cottage. Beautiful views and surroundings. Very comfortably appointed. Amazing furniture and accents that give out authentic retro vibes. Jody is a warm and thoughtful host. Responds almost immediately in case of any doubts or questions. Definitely want to come and stay here again in a different season.

    Shruti2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage has a spectacular view, including amazing sunsets when the conditions are right. Jody is a wonderful, understanding host. Everything the previous two reviewers said is true - this is a great spot that will fill up fast. A little extra info that hasn't been covered in the other reviews: there is a TV with Netflix, YouTube and other internet options. You can load a YouTube video of a crackling fire, which is almost as good as a real wood stove until the new wood stove is up and running. There is also a fence around most of the property. There's space under the fence for small dogs to get out, but it creates enough of a barrier that well-behaved, off-leash pets will know not to cross it. Note that there is a steep drop (about 8 feet) at the water's edge, so we had to keep our blind dog leashed so that he would not fall. The cottage is very spacious and while we were only 2 people, I think that two couples or a family with children would find it very comfortable. Downtown Perth is about 15 minutes away, where you can get any supplies you need, with lots of tourism and dining options. We wanted a winter cottage getaway with all the modern amenities and close to a pretty town with dining options, and that's exactly what we got! Thank you Jody and family for the great stay!

    Lara2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • If you've come this far don't even hesitate, book this place now because I know bookings are going to fill up fast. The place is perfect. Jody could not be a better host, kind and considerate, and goes more then that extra mile in terms of hospitality. The pictures (at the time of this review) do not do this hidden gem justice. The location is well secluded, huge front deck, perfect fire pit, and best of all the lake is no more then a few hundred feet from the back porch. Inside you have the feeling of a 70's, early 80's retro cabin, with all of the modern day necessities we have grown accustomed to. The furniture fits the period perfectly yet seems like everything was bought brand new decades ago, perfectly stored, and only unveiled now. The main part of the cabin is surrounded by windows for an amazing view of the lake whether you are eating breakfast in the dining area or doing a puzzle (we got a bit of it done, lol) in the lounge area. The bathroom has the modern touches of comfort, and the 3 bedrooms have everything you need. Clearly all of the linen, comforters, pillows, and towels are practically brand new, maintained and cleaned. The place itself was spotless. Without doubt we will be back in the warmer months. Thank you Jody and to your husband for a great weekend for my daughters 16th bday!!

Welcome to the Martin Family Cottage. Homestead located on Adam Lake which opens to the Big Rideau. Minuets away from Perth and Smiths Falls Ontario. Our Beautiful lake front cottage is the perfect place for relaxation tranquility and making family memories. Three Generations of our family have loved our location. We are honoured to offer stays to your families to enjoy!
Our cottage is a quiet peaceful place to come relax and enjoy family time or simply just time away. The lake is accessed by boat through a narrow channel off the Big Rideau which eliminates the big boat traffic that is found on the Big Rideau. With this access to the Rideau by boat, visiting parks, restaurants, marinas and more can be quite enjoyable.
Quiet friendly community consisting of about six houses a long the water front .
  • Simply perfect!

    Martin2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, very clean and comfortable. The area is nice and the neighborhood is very welcoming.

    Martin2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our time here! The hosts were wonderful about answering questions or giving direction for anything we may have needed. The kayaks, boat and canoe were included and our we all made great use of them! Loons, geese and even swans traveled right by the cabin! We found it a very peaceful place to unplug from the world for a week!!!

    Martin2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful location. We enjoyed the dock, the deck, and the grill. We appreciated having use of the kayaks and canoe and spent the week on the water.

  • Great cottage and great location. Very close to Perth and Murphy’s Point Provincial Park to launch our boat. The park charged a small entry fee but was returned to us as soon as we exited the park. Easy checkin. Stephen responded within the hour to any questions I had. The cottage is located on Adams Lake with access to The Big Rideau which was perfect for us. We were able to boat out on the bigger water and then return to sit on our dock without all the waves and noise that comes with the boat traffic on The Big Rideau. Remember - this is a cottage - not a 5 star hotel - but it has all the amenities a cottage has to offer. I did not need to pack many items I did as the cottage comes equipped with everything you need for cooking, utensils, dinnerware, towels, and linens. The bathroom is a good size and the shower had great water pressure. There is a canoe and two kayaks available. We enjoyed a scenic ride in the kayaks around the entire lake. We brought our own life jackets but there are some available. Having AC was a definite bonus. It was very hot during our stay so we were thankful for the cool sleep at night. Overall a great stay.

  • Steve's cottage was nice with an amazing nature feel and a nice view.

Quaint victorian 2 storey brick home on quiet tree lined street. Walk to rink, hospital and downtown. Luxuriously appointed with the best stocked kitchen you'll find anywhere. Gleaming hardwood floors throughout, quality upgraded fixtures, soaker tub combine to help you feel at home in a new place.
McEwen Avenue is a block away from our two arenas and our outdoor ice surface. While you’re here you can attend our junior A Bears games or take advantage of public ice time. The hospital is also a couple blocks away and the downtown core is a walk away as well.
  • This is a wonderful home full of character and personality. Our family thoroughly enjoyed a small family gathering over a couple of days. The McEwen is exceptionally well-maintained and the hosts ensured the home was extremely welcoming. Highly recommend.

  • This is a great old home wonderfully renovated. The beds are comfortable with duvet covers. The bathroom with walk-in shower and whirlpool tub was sparkling clean. All the appliances were new and worked well. And the kitchen was well stocked with dishes including casserole dishes and a crock pot. My family throughly enjoyed this space and our time in Smith Falls.

  • It was an absolute pleasure staying with Sylvia. She cooked the most decadent meals for us every morning and was so accommodating with check in and even allowing our small dog to stay in the house. Her little homestead is very cozy including her happy little chicken coop and hot tub which we were encouraged to use whenever we liked. I have nothing bad to say about my stay here and I will definitely come again!

  • This was one of those super rare “home away from home” experiences. We loved everything - the cute room, the lovely homemade dinners, the great wine and most of all our amazing hosts. We had the feeling of visiting family. It was informal, cozy and super relaxing. If we are ever even remotely in the area again, we will come back! And the area is great too! Theres a nice hike with lots of wildlife starting practically from the backyard - or theres the opertunity to take a cano-trip. And dont miss the crazy antiques store nearby - it is simply one of a kind! Thanks for letting us stay in your home, Emilie and Niklas

Experience a beautiful region known for its lakes, rivers, parks & farms. Take art lessons, canoe, kayak, cross country ski, hike, bike or relax & take in panoramic views and experience the best of Lanark County and a country way of life.
Welcome to Perth and Lanark County and experience it like a 'Local'. Visit "Ontario's Prettiest Little Town" located one hour South of Ottawa. You can stay at this quaint, one-of-a-kind main level home built into a former Gothic style stone church and enjoy stylish space surrounded by art, architecture, history and nature created by people who are passionate about what makes this church homestead and region so very special. This self check-in private main floor home is perfectly suited as a retreat for families, friends and those away from home for work. It is very spacious featuring two large bedrooms: First bedroom is carved out of the historic Nave and Pulpit of the original church and features curved walls and has a Queen bed with en-suite access to the bathroom. The second bedroom has a Queen bed and is located where once the rows of church pews stood. A third convertible sun room and semi private bedroom is available with a double futon bed. In addition, a large sunken living room, open concept dining room & kitchen, a large bathroom with washer and dryer, wood stove, fire place and plenty of closet spaces. The South facing sun room with a walk out to a stone and masonry patio offers a perfect space to relax and enjoy view of the outdoors and gardens. Inquire about booking a creative learning experience at the Church. Lessons are 3 hours in duration, include a light lunch and connect and enrich participants to culture, history and the essence of creativity besides hands on learning fun. Below, are some highlights from Hosts Janice and Garry: Hosts since the '80's, we understand and appreciate what makes our community special and we enjoy assisting those away from home or new to local culture and environment, to enjoy and experience themselves like a local . You can visit the Beveridge Lock Station Trails, a designated UNESCO heritage site located 3 km. from the Church. Lanark County is known for its country flavours. From maple syrup to craft beer, handcrafted chocolate and local farmers' market, there is something special for everyone. The Perth Farmers' Market is a hub of local wholesome goodness. Open every Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Glass Palace beside the Tay River Basin. Great baked goods, soups, drinks, BBQ, organic meat/vegetables/fruits, flowers and just about everything wonderful from local producers and growers. A great place to spend a perfect Saturday morning and bring amazing ingredients back to the Church Homestead to enjoy during your stay. Weatherhead Brew Company: We recommend this place for those who love craft beers. Warm ambiance where you can see how craft beer is made, sit in to enjoy beer/light lunch/snacks and take home favorite flavors. An easy 10 minute drive and a great place to meet up with friends and family. Coutts' Country Flavours is just down the road from us: A fabulous place to pick up local organic produce straight from farmers. Owner and baker extraordinaire, Diane is always helpful and a wealth of knowledge about locally produced foods. A 5 minute drive from our place. Another place we love is Jim's Snack Shack in Rideau Ferry where one can savor the best Fish and Chips on the planet. Don't let the wee 'Shack' fool you. The flavours from what Jim cooks is delicious and his portions are 'Lumber Jack' sized. Jim is friendly, generous and we highly recommend and appreciate what he does so well. Guests can borrow our canoe, kayaks, paddle board, bicycles or skis, Provincial Park Pass upon availability to visit nearby trails, beaches and lakes with a $50 refundable equipment deposit. The groomed trails at Murphy's Point Provincial Park are superb. Help yourselves to some courtesy welcome snacks and/or breakfast items in the Studio. There are brochures and maps available. Best of all, we can refer and recommend the best of our community, terrific places to eat, shop, explore and to have fun. Linens, towels, general kitchen ware are provided for your convenience. With warmest welcome to our Church home, a country way of life and a brilliant unique creative space. Janice, Garry and Family
The community is artistic and specialties include Maple Syrup and organic farms. The Church is a short drive to downtown Perth or Smiths Falls for shopping and where artistic and fun festivals are abound during the Summer. The Church is located in a bucolic waterfront village named Port Elmsley. It sits just 10 kms to downtown Perth. It is a rural township of Perth. There are Rivers and Lakes nearby and the Cross Canada trail runs past the Church. During Winter, cross country and snow shoeing at nearby trails is highly recommended.
  • Janice and Garry were exceptional hosts. Their place was clean and welcoming. We had a better than expected trip. They were available when we had questions and the check-in and check-out was seamless. When our initial plan changed, they were flexible with our check-in time and added a few extra touches for our young daughter. Highly recommended. They are top notch hosts!

    Mitchell2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • My daughter and I stayed here to have a bit of respite and ground ourselves from the hectic ways of life. The space we rented was perfect. We had a fire going each day and night, and created a new composition on the piano. We joined Janice at the bonfire out back and enjoyed the stars. Janice is exceptional and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. She has added many local artifacts and history into the church, and each piece tells a beautiful story. Perth is an exquisite little town with many great local restaurants and shops, not to mention the canal. An absolutely perfect stay that gave us the serenity we were looking for. You won’t be disappointed.

    Christina2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • Janice and Garry were amazing hosts. They were extremely friendly, helpful and super fast at replying to all of our questions in the app. The property was warm, inviting, clean and cozy. Fully equipped and what we were looking for a long weekend away. Located near provincial parks, we were able to hike and see the local sights very easily. Would love to stay again.

  • The house is ideally located near the centre of town, so you’re never too far away from most things on foot, making this a good place if you plan on exploring Perth. Everything we thought we would need (and then some) was available on hand, and Andrea had made herself available should we have questions. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom clean, and the house well-furnished. All told, it was an enjoyable stay.

A very relaxed atmosphere, all natural cotton bedding and feather duvets, good food and feels like home away from home! Please note this is a farm, with big farm dogs, chickens and fresh eggs for breakfast, sheep, hay, wool, etc. I’m always glad to give tours and show fibre production/spinning wool demos. We also have a refuge-of-last-resort for disabled cats (not sick!), which would otherwise be put down. Not everyone has the time or energy to put into blind, wobbly, broken-limbed pets.
You are welcome to enjoy all living areas (tv and cable), cook a meal, enjoy farm-fresh eggs :) If the weather permits, lounge around our little pool and soak up some rays!
  • Amazing people, beautiful property, delicious food, deep conversations, cute animals, comfortable sleeping space, loved our time here and hung out the next morning longer then planned because we were having a great time. Would highly recommend the experience to anyone, can't wait to go back!

  • Rob and Shari are excellent hosts! The space was awesome and when we arrived there were special touches catered towards our kids, some kid friendly snacks, baby wash and a little kids table with two stools for them to eat at. We slept in the king bed and I think it might be the most comfortable bed I’ve slept on. We are back in Smith’s Falls in the fall and will definitely be booking again.

  • What a wonderful place to spend some time away. The place is so welcoming, clean and homey. Rob & Shari are great host and everything went so smoothly there was no need to contact them our entire stay. The thoughtful little touches were very much appreciated. This place had absolutely everything we needed. We would definitely stay here again.

  • The perfect location for our group while in Smiths Falls - close to shops and restaurants and a short drive from Canopy Growth. Will definitely be staying here again the next time we are in town!

    Amber2019-12-20T00:00:00Z
  • This was a perfect location for a sister's get together - two from out of province and one that wanted just far enough but not too far from Ottawa! Ferguson House has so many thoughtful touches, from the homemade banana bread, to so many of the little extras one needs in a kitchen and there they were! Our time at Ferguson House was just so comfortable, we lacked nothing and anything we might have ever thought we needed was right in front of us. The location was perfect, close enough to any and everything and yet so quiet! Even off street parking - bonus!! This would be absolutely lovely in the spring and summer. Ferguson House is on our list for a return visit!

  • Rob and Shari's place is just perfection! There were many thoughtful little touches we really enjoyed. The place was sparkling clean and exactly as pictured. The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is pleased to offer the rare opportunity for guests to sleep in a caboose for an authentic railroader experience. Curl up in our comfortable pull-down beds with fresh linens and relax in the quiet glow of the lantern. This plywood Caboose was built in postwar 1945.
A small kitchenette (sinks, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, electric kettle), showers and washrooms are available inside the museum.
We are within short walking distance to the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), many local restaurants and shops, picturesque parks and trails, and our lovely downtown area.
  • This is an unique Airbnb experience We had a great evening in the caboose and the staff especially Lisa made us very welcome Good places to eat in Smiths Falls and scenic walks down by the Rideau Canal

    Richard2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Sitting right next to the historic railway station and surrounded by other rolling stock and locomotives, there really isn't a more incredible location. Caboose was super clean and beds were very comfortable. Staff were super helpful and friendly and the breakfast pastries are delicious!!!

    Aleks2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • The Railway Museum is a total gem! Steeped in local railway history and with friendly, knowledgeable staff, this is a perfect afternoon or overnight stay in one of their three cabooses. Our family thoroughly enjoyed this unique getaway! I would highly recommend it. Thanks RMEO! We will be back.

    Jennifer2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • This unique experience is in a category of its own. We were pleased to learn that our patronage was continuing to help fund this train museum. It's a highly recommended experience - even if you are not a train enthusiast. The ambiance and the staff are great!

    Paul Marc2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Hi, My boyfriend and I enjoyed learning about trains and historical ways of transporting goods and people. We learned a lot from speaking to some of the staff about fun facts and some history about how it was working for railway companies back in the 40's up to more recently. It is without any question noticeable that everyone who works at the museum are passionate and want to see the museum thrive. We crated some very memorable memories spending the night in a caboose! Keep up the themed events!!

    Lisa2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • The staff were all so friendly and knowledgeable. We had fun stepping back in time and sleeping in the caboose. Great museum, so much history here.

    Susan2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • If you are a fanatical train enthusiast (as I am) it really doesn’t get much better than sleeping overnight in an historic wooden caboose (or “van” as they were usually called by Canadian railroaders) next to an historic station surrounded by more historic trains. The staff and volunteers were helpful and knowledgeable and there is lots of interesting equipment in the station and on museum grounds to look at, including a fully functional 100+ year old hand-pump car, which you can take for a spin for a mile or so down the tracks and then back again. I recommend doing that first thing in morning (a great cardio workout) and THEN heading into the station for shower and breakfast... It was like I died and went to train heaven.

    Rob2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • We cycled there as a group of 5 (with 3 teenage boys) and reserved 2 cabooses. Everyone loved the experience. Especially John and his wonderful real stories of life working the rails. The kitchenette is helpful and there is a collection of games if you happen to get rained out. Lots to explore nearby.

Welcome to our award-winning home! Enjoy this charming, peaceful bedroom at the back of the house - original pine floors, super comfortable bed with antique wicker headboard, quality linens and towels, antique rocking chair, and plenty of storage. Relax and unwind in this beautiful property, located in a quiet area, only one block from the centre of town - ideal for exploring Ontario's prettiest town. If you need two rooms, see Warm & Characterful Perth Heritage Home, our other listing.
The bedroom has a very comfortable queen sized bed and a closet with ironing board/iron. There is also a desk/chair. Bathroom with toilet, sink, jacuzzi tub & shower. Soap, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer and towels are supplied for your convenience. We have high speed wifi, with details in the room. Original pine flooring. Lovely big backyard with extensive flowerbeds, gazebos (one screened in for dining), ponds with soothing waterfall. Easy to walk to restaurants, cafes, Stewart Park, golf course, shops, a superb art gallery "Studio 87", supermarket and more. Close to Ottawa, Kingston, Westport, Almonte, Rideau Ferry, and all that this beautiful area has to offer - hiking, farmers markets, art galleries, antiques, maple syrup, lakes and rivers galore. We love our town and want to share it with others! Please note: The house is not air-conditioned, but it is very well-insulated. However, in a heat wave, the room does get warm. We provide fans for your comfort, and if you leave the window open at night (and close it during the day with the blind down), the room cools down. **We also have another queen bedroom and a single, should you want another room or to rent out the entire top floor of the house.
We are close to everything, at the quiet end of the main street through Perth.
  • Recommended. Older home on a quiet street only two blocks from downtown Perth. Faith and Richard are thoughtful hosts.

  • This is a really cute and charming place in an old heritage home. Faith was really easy to work with. The house is walking distance to the downtown shops, bars, and restaurants. The experience was really cozy and welcoming! Just a head's up that the bathroom is shared with the other airbnb room.

    Julien2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Faith and Richard are wonderful hosts and lovely people. The room was beautiful and serene, and the house so gorgeous. The bed is extremely comfortable, made up with quality linens. And the space super quiet and private. This is amazing value. Book it, because you will be so pleased you did. Not to mention the precious greeting we received by their collie Findley... who could be a stand-in for the famous Lassie!

    Claudine2019-10-19T00:00:00Z

  • Was my second time staying at this AirBnb in Perth. It was an amazing stay as always. Perth is a great town with a lot to offer and this place is right in the heart of it. The entire place is very clean and organized; accurate pictures. Martin and Randa were very swift to answer any questions I had and the check in /check out was very smooth. Will definitely be booking this spot again for our next stay in Perth.

    Jennifer2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Exceptional place and town

    Jason2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • A gorgeous place! Wonderful hospitality, chic 2-story 'maisonette' with all amenities, and perfect location in beautiful, downtown Perth. Couldn't have asked for a better place for our weekend getaway! Thank you Randa and Martin.

  • A lovely place in the middle of Perth, perfect for a romantic weekend!

    David2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is the perfect location in Perth. You can walk everywhere. The property is a heritage building which comes with a unique layout. Super clean with everything you could possibly need. Even a bottle of wine to welcome us. You must be able to carry luggage up two flights of stairs but that was made clear in the description. Would absolutely stay again.

    Andrea 2019-10-07T00:00:00Z
  • A great space! Clean, spotless and stylish. Right on the main street in beautiful historic Perth, walking distance to everything. Martin is quick to respond to any questions or concerns. We would definitely recommend this space to any friends or family and will be sure to stay again when we come back.

    Larry And Alida2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Martin and Randa's place was exactly what we needed. We live in Kanata and needed an escape from our hectic lives to decompress! The living room is very cozy, Netflix available plus the breeze and sounds of the water outside. Comfort is top notch, aromatherapy, wonderful mattress, great shower and perfect location. We got take out breakfast directly across the street Saturday morning. While Perth is lacking in a variety of restaurants that use fresh ingredients, we managed to find the Rocky River Cafe. We went there for Friday and Saturday dinner, plus Sunday brunch out in the courtyard. Highly recommend! Back to the accommodations..It would quite easy to prep a meal here with a bakery, butcher on the same street. If you don't have everything you need, it's an easy walk down to grab extras. We always travel with my own salt n pepper grinder after being annoyed on previous trips . Having been to numerous Airbnb's in Canada and the US, this one hits the high marks and it's barely an hour from home:)
