Places to stay in Nagiso, Kiso District
初めてでも何処か懐かしい囲炉裏のある古民家。近くに妻籠、馬籠などの観光地があります。渓流釣りの拠点としてもお勧めです。お風呂はありませんが近くに温泉があります。
・We have IRORI(Japanease traditional fireplace:cut in the middle floor) ・It is surrounded by beautiful mountains. It's just like the world of japanease folk tale.
MAGOME,STUMAGO: only 2 stops by train from NOJIRI station, then transfer to bus. ATERA RAVINE: 20minute on foot. Supermaket, convinience store, cafe,a few restrants are nearby.
  • This was such a memorable and wonderful stay. The house has so much athmosphere and the whole Kiso valley is just stunning. Highly recommend anyone visiting! The bikes were super convenient to get around. Nakasendo path is easy to reach and the mountain views are just breathtaking! The house has everything for cooking your own meals and the heater and warm futons really saved us when temperatures dropped to -6 Celsius at night. Miwas mum was also so kind to bring us hot water bottles that really did stay warm all night. (Bringing extra layers for exploring during the day still might be a good idea if you come in March though). The hosts hospitality was incredible. We recommend this place from the bottom of our hearts!

  • A dream location. The place is truly traditional, while still offering modern conveniences of Wifi and heating. The house is close to the station (for those who wish to travel to Magome/Tsumago), but Nojiri also holds several landmarks for those interested in exploring the local area (Such as the Ravine, the Shrine, etc). The surrounding environment is a beauty in of itself. Total respect has to go to the hosts, who have gone over and above to let us feel familar and at home with the environment. We arrived on rather extraordinary circumstances, but they were more than willing to help us through complications faced, and we are truly thankful for their patience and generousity. We encourage anyone and everyone to visit Kiso Valley at least once, and we hope they stay at this house in doing do.

  • There was a space like a Ghibli movie, and I felt relaxed. The host was very good and I could relax with very little interference. We also enjoyed grilling fish and meat in the hearth

  • The Kiso valley was not on our list of must sees, but now that we have visited, we cannot wait to return. The town is pure magic, with a small population of the nicest people we have ever met. Especially our host. She was so warm and made this incredible, historic house a home. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left (too soon!) we felt taken care of, and in awe of the beautiful surroundings. We ate amazing food in town, took a long gorgeous hike through the mountains, and slept peacefully in the loft (thanks to our warm yutanpo!) We can not recommend this house and this special area of Japan enough.

  • Miwa’s place was a dream. It was cozy and relaxing and easy to walk around the town. While it was cold, there were more than enough blankets and each night Miwa’s mom brought us hot water bottles to warm our bed. It was a short train ride away from the nakasendo trail- which we loved as the town of Nojiri was very quaint. Her parents are incredibly kind. They surprised us by picking us up at the station. My husband accidentally forgot his fiddle on the train and Miwa’s mom coordinated with the station to hold it for us, then her father drove 40 minutes each way to pick it up. It was so incredibly kind. This town & Miwas place was a welcome relaxation after leaving the bustle of Tokyo. I highly recommend this gem!!!!

    Lauren2019-11-21T00:00:00Z
  • Miwa’s house is gorgeous and filled with character. Her mother who lives next door is lovely and very hospitable. I would absolutely love to visit again.

    Isabella2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • As with pretty much all the reviews a pretty special place, very well located, just be sure to check train times as they are infrequent but with a bit of planning well timed.

  • A nice place to stay while exploring Kiso valley / Naksendo trail. Miwa is responsive and her lovely parents invited us to do some shower at theirs nearby home... It's an authentic Japanese house... Unique experience indeed.

  • This hostel is definitely the best one I've ever stayed. First, the location of the hostel is a bit far from the main street in Magome-Juku, only 5-10 mins walk, but it turns out that the hostel is a quiet and calm place to take a rest. The hostel was used to be an elementary school which was closed and renovated for hostel, so you can see many traces that makes feel kind of nostalgia. . They offer a ride to go to Onsen resort nearby and you can get a discount for admission. Also the staff know a lot about local souvenirs, how to visit some sightseeing spots, and so on.I purchased bottles of sake that one of them recommended, which was very nice. They also provide some breakfast for free in the morning, which is very helpful because there are few cafes and convenience stores that open early in the morning. I'd like stay at Gaku if I visit Magome-juku again.Highly recommended. The hostel that has stopped so far is the best hostel with both excellent service and cleanliness. It happened to be a corner cabin, so there was more private space than other guests, which helped me to change clothes and put things. Although it is a little off the streets of Mabuku-juku, it was within walking distance, and I was able to spend a quiet and calm atmosphere. The facility was renovated from an abandoned elementary school, so elementary school classrooms and corridors were left behind, and the wood-grained interior was very warm and relaxing. In the lounge, there were origami papers and coffee drinkers, making it easy for guests to communicate with each other and enjoyed conversations with foreign travelers. Many of the staff were friendly and sent me to a nearby hot spring or taught me some recommended sake. I would also like to stay if I visit Magome-juku again. I'm really thankful to you.

  • Really good place to stay in Magome. When we arrived, we got given the option of booking dinner at this one restaurant (all other restaurants close at 6pm in Magome) and I'd really recommend it. It was probably one of the best dinners we had during our trip! Would stay again!

    Andrea2019-10-30T00:00:00Z
  • The place located in the small village. Very nice and quiet location with all facilities you need. The staffs there are all friendly and good speaking in English. Wonderful guest house with lovely people!

    Jenny2019-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • It was our first time in sleeping in capsule like beds. Comfy beds within a 10 or 12 person dorm. We were there in late October so it wasn’t overly busy with guests which made it nice and quiet. Huge kitchen area to cook your own meals and meet other guests. 7-8min walk into the Main Street into town. Highly recommend doing the magome-Tsumago hike. It took us around 3 hrs with plenty of stops along the way to take in the views. You can forward your luggage on at the bus stop for 1000yen per bag. As for the nightlife, there is completely nothing. Overall a lovely little town and probably only the one night night needed.

    Luke2019-10-19T00:00:00Z
  • Overall, a great place to stay

    Frances2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • This is frankly one of the best bed and breakfast my boyfriend and I have ever been to. The hosts will kindly answer all your questions, the space is big and clean, and the showers are amazing (yes, really haha). They also serve breakfast in the morning for free, which is great since it is a little far from the rest of Magome. I truly recommend this stay.

  • Even 10 people had a valuable experience in a spacious private house! We have cooking utensils and towels. The starry sky is perfect.

  • This was such a marvelous stay. The 150 year old house is incredibly well preserved with a modern touch. Aya was very responsive and helpful every step of the way. She helped with transportation and booking dinner reservations. She was very accommodating to allow for my dog as well. 5 stars all around.

    Trevor2019-11-30T00:00:00Z
  • It was a very clean and stylish space. I was able to spend more comfortably than expected. Since cooking utensils were also available, you can buy pots and so on. A pretty beautiful star was seen from the parking lot. Because there is a heater and kotatsu, you can get enough warmth without heating.

  • This is a wonderful house and a unique chance to spend time in a lovely piece ofJapan's history. Nagiso-machi is beautiful and a great base for exploring the area.

    Eric2019-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful space and surroundings. Beware the kitchen table is on unsure footing. Unfortunately we did not arrive early enough to explore the area around Kashiwaya and there was no flexibility given for later shuttle to the station. We did however go down to Kiso river after leaving our luggage at the station and what a magic experience that was. Also, at the station we met other travellers, a young couple, who had a nasty meeting with an aggressive monkey on the bridge that ended well, thanks to some proper defence moves with... an umbrella.

    John2019-11-06T00:00:00Z
  • The space is much higher than expected!

  • Emi's guesthouse was squeaky clean and very cosy. Feels like home! Superbly maintained facilities and amenities provided definitely made our stay an enjoyable one. Emi was also very helpful and gave a lot of good travel recommendations. If it weren't for her advice, we wouldn't have had enjoyed the rainy weather. Highly recommended!

    Kuan2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • A very good living experience, for a student studying in Japan, Emiさん's home has a very warm and warm feeling. Regarding the itinerary, the landlord is also very warm and gives advice. This time we went to see the beautiful sky of Azhi Village, but the viewing place of the starry sky is far from the residence of the hotel. When we go, we only spend two hundred yen but there is no bus on the return journey. We can only book a taxi in advance. This is also thanks to Emiさん telling us in advance how to contact the taxi. However, this time there is a small regret, that is, there is no time to go to the nearby "Mengmeng Kaiping Peace Memorial Hall", if there is a chance, it will come over to make up for the regret. Overall, it was a great experience. If the later visitors do not speak Japanese, they can also communicate with the landlord in English or French.

  • Emi is a very nice person, hospitable, caring for the guests, like a family. The rooms are also clean and spotless, and everything is available. Convenience stores and supermarkets are very convenient nearby, and the 100+ year-old fruit shop tastes delicious. Next time I come to Azhi Village, I will definitely choose her house. By the way, I remind you that the location of Google Maps is not accurate. It takes 8-10 minutes to walk from the station to her house. The map can be displayed very far. I must contact Emi after booking.

    Fang2019-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • Emi is very enthusiastic! Every time I sent a message, I replied very quickly. I also gave us a lot of recommendations and drove us to the museum. The room is in a good location, very close to the station and Rosen. The starry sky at night is also very good, and Emi also left us a door.みんなの素敵な家です!

  • I stayed with 7 people this time, but the room was large enough. There was a living room and a kitchen where everyone could sit and talk in addition to the bedroom, and there were tableware, so it was not a problem even if we stayed overnight. When I arrived in the room, there was a futon in the bedroom and I was able to rest comfortably. I would like to use it again.

  • Shige was a great host. He took care of me and made sure I was safe during a bad typhoon (Hagibis). He recommended a local sushi restaurant with a great chef, excellent food and reasonably priced. I could not expect better hospitality. The house was clean with all amenities and very comfortable. Check in and out was quick and easy. Not very far from the train station and near to a bus stop. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Chiyoko-san is very helpful and did her best to make me comfortable. She is a very caring person ! And her cat is lovely! I had two spacious room - with tatami floor and futon bed. After a very cold day the hot bath prepared by her was a blessing ! The house is huge and old , and very traditional. It has its history ,for sure. The house is 5 -7 minutes from railway station by taxi, 30 minutes on foot. Better get a taxi. Thank you so much, dear Chiyoko-san! You are in my heart ❤

  • Chiyoko-san is simply amazing and this place is as authentic as it gets. The house is old and maybe because it has not been renovated recently it adds even more to this feel. We definitely felt at home but not only that. We were treated with kindness, care and great professionalism by this golden hearted humble, 100% dedicated and deeply wise being called Chiyoko-san. This is a real Japanese inn in the truest sense of the word (including the mountain creek speeding and singing by the house) and expect to feel very welcome even if you just landed in this foreign culture and you do not know any other word than arigato. I had the luxury of my partner translating at times (he knows to speak a bit of Japanese) but most of the communication is done through actions in Japan and the actions of this lady made me feel like a real Japanese staying at this inn some 100 years ago. We wholeheartedly appreciate this house, the grounds and the soul taking care of it all. We are also in aw at her professionalism, dedication and integrity. She is indeed practicing through her every day work the spiritual values of this ancient culture. We took taxi to the soba restaurant she recommended were you can sit European stile or Japanese (they also have menu in English). After we did some shopping in the wonderful lacquer shop on the other side of the street as well as Japanese and European stile sweets on the way. All was good and perfect. It is not far to walk home. After the station make sure to take right (just before the bridge made by the bigger road above) by the map showing shrines in the area, then left when the little street ends and then right again along the high-way until you get to the gas station where you cross the street and walk up along the highly charming winding path to the house. • My family loved their stay at Chiyoko sans place. It is a traditional Japanese minshuku and Chiyoko was a very kind host. It is quite an old house so do not go expecting all new and modern facilities. It was a great base to explore the surrounding areas for which I would certainly recommend a car.

  • This is a perfect spot for a budget fly drive through the kiso mountains. It’s a good base to explore the area, but you do really need a car to get around, as it is a good 30 minute walk from the station (and from any restaurants/ Onsen). Chimiko is a great host, she does all she can to help and brings fresh tea in the evenings. Staying here was like staying with your Japanese grandma :). The mini-apartment was perfect for some peace and quiet after a day’s hiking. There are a few bugs, and it looks a little tired, but this is all part of rural japan’s charm. Thank you for looking after us!

    Monica2019-11-07T00:00:00Z
  • The apartment is wonderfully rustic and quaint, especially so given the fairy tale surroundings of Kiso. Chiyoko-san is a dear woman, one of the kindest we met on our trip, and she looks forward to getting to know every single person who visits her place. We loved our visit to Kisofukushima more than a lot of the beautiful places we saw in Japan, and that's in no small part thanks to the locals like Chiyoko-san, who are all so welcoming. P.s. Check out Izakaya Chikara for even more of that welcoming charm and some fantastic food (Masa-san, the owner, speaks fluent english and tells fantastic stories alongside his mother, Yoko-san, who is a character and one of my favorite people ever).

  • It is an entire, beautiful flat for yourself. The location requuires a little walk from the station, but it is a very beautiful spot in Kiso Valley! Considering what you get, the price is very cheap. The owner is a very friendly and capable woman. Her English is limited, but she manages to get everything across using Google translate, so no problem there. Great place to relax and enjoy Japanese nature (you mind encounter a few insects). I can recommend it!

We left the place feeling relaxed and at peace. The outdoor onsens are right next to a waterfall, the natural sounds from the waterfall combined with the onsen's hot spring water made everything perfect! Miyoharu and his wife provide excellent service. He picked us up from the train station and even picked us up from Tsumago after we were out exploring all day. • The observation deck where I wanted to see the starry sky gave up a little far, but the accommodation was very rich in nature with mountains and rivers nearby. Because the weather was fine, I could see the stars neatly even from a little climb. We enjoyed watching monkeys frolic through the front yard and down the path between rice fields that were exactly in front of the cabin. I look forward to coming back in summer to enjoy the gorgeous deck and bbq! But winter was cozy thanks to the lovely amenities. And as an added bonus, Saori is a perfect hostess, corresponding right away and answering questions in a timely manner. She’s a five-star host for sure!

  • It was a very nice house with a real fireplace, and a signboard stood at the branch, so we arrived without hesitation. It was fun to talk to the host in front of the fireplace at night. I think that it is a recommended inn for those who like at home. The homemade jam for breakfast and the freshly picked herbal tea were very delicious. Although it was raining during the day, the night stars looked beautiful and I felt happy. There are one-day hot spring facilities and supermarkets nearby, and it is very convenient if you have a car. Please refer to the nearby spotMAP written by the host! !

  • You can expect very helpful, friendly hospitality and a modern, spacious bedroom. Their lovely house is surrounded by fruit trees and crops so it's a lovely place. However, they are about 30 minutes walk from Ichida station but Toshi is helpful with transfers if needed. There is an extra charge of 500 Yen for a load of washing. There's no dryer but you can hang clothes outside on the covered deck. There's a great supermarket, cafe and helpful info centre down in the very modern and stylish retail complex, 25 mins walk.

  • Thanks to Tae's quick response and meticulous response, I was able to spend the best travel time. In addition, the bookstore where we stayed was renewed and maintained a very clean interior while maintaining the taste of 300 years old. It was so comfortable that I wanted to stay longer. Downstairs is big and inviting, even some nice board games. There's hardly any cars driving by, so super quiet as well. And for people wanting to walk the Nakasendo, it's the perfect choice!

Delicious local coffee provided by the host was a great surprise. • Very spacious, clean, comfortable, old Japanese house. If you have a car this is perfect. The host is extremely nice and responds quickly in English. With three rooms, a big kitchen and large bathroom (Hot-water flow is a bit slow) you can make yourself at home. A supermarket is one minute walk and this is a very quiet neighborhood. Once you have a car this house has easy access to Magome on your way to the trail. It might get chilly at nights so be well clothed. Mattresses and blankets are very good, washing machine is very good, kitchen is equipped, toilet is fine., check-in and access are fine though locating the house was not that easy. We definitely would choose this good house again.

  • If you’re looking for a quiet, traditional experience, this is a place for you. Spacious, warm and cozy, this was easily my best experience in Japan so far. Located in the small town of Sakashita, 10 minutes from Nakatsugawa, this AirBNB is located close to the Magaome/Tsumago trail and makes the perfect accommodation for a day hike. You will also find Cafe42 nearby to your AirBNB, a small cafe owned by the hosts. The food here is amazing and even better is Takashi’s amazing record collection. Sit down, relax under the kotatsu and listen to some amazing songs from the 70s-00s. While you’re in town, consider dropping by the local shrine and visit some of the hidden Izakaya’s for a great night out with your friends. I would recommend everyone to visit this AirBNB if they chose to visit Japan. It really was a great experience!

The town is beautiful, but as rural towns are, pretty much everything closes at night so keep in mind if anyone's arriving at night. • Koda and Kero were amazing hosts. The accommodation was great but what stood out was Kero and Koda’s hospitality and generosity. Best people in Japan!

  • Their place is peaceful, calm, a bit out of the way, and totally worth it. If you happen to be in the Ena or Nakatsugawa area, I can't recommend it highly enough.

  • A dome-shaped house with a beautiful location with air and starry sky. The ceiling was high, and the moment I entered, the tension increased. The room was very clean and there were enough facilities and amenities. I went to the next day when I stayed at the autumnal spot and sightseeing spot that I visited with the host's guidance. It was good to consult. Overall satisfaction was very high, and thanks to you, it was a good memory.

  • Koda & Kero were fabulous hosts! Koda picked us up from the train station and offered to bring us to a restaurant for dinner as we hadn’t had time to eat, which we accepted! We really enjoyed his company and he happily answered all our questions about Japan and the surrounding area. The accommodation is amazing! Designed by Koda, it’s unlike anything we’ve stayed in before. They are focused on cleanliness and it shows! Breakfast was simple and very filling - great tasting fruit, yogurt, toast, jam, cheese and orange juice. When we booked, Koda had offered to drive us to Tsumago for our hike to Magome which was much appreciated! He and Kero even provided us with water and mineral/electrolyte tablets to help us in the 35 degree heat!! Highly recommend this place! All the stars!

  • Been doing AirBNB for 5 years in many countries. This experience was #1 for us. Our host picked us up from the train. He took us to buy things and then drove down a historic road while pointing out landmarks and describing historic events in English. The home was amazing. A very unique place with plenty of extras. He dropped us off at a great Japanese restaurant and then picked us up 2 hours late. He had fruit, a kind of raisin bread, honey, cheese, yogurt, coffee, tea, milk, and orange juice in the kitchen for us. A lovely light breakfast. He took us to Tsumongo and we stopped at a canyon to take amazing photos on the way. What a lovely man and his wife was great too. These are the experiences you just can't get at a hotel. An experience that becomes part of the actual memory of your vacation.

  • Koda and Kero are such kind-hearted hosts. They were so thoughtful and they made sure we would have a wonderful time during our short stay in their hometown. Koda went above and beyond to make sure we made the most of our trip to Ena, Tsumago and Magome. He even drove us around for a bit and showed us highlights of the city we would pass by. That was a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend staying here if you plan to do the Nakasendo trail. Kero’s vegetarian dinner was quite delicious as well. Thanks to Koda and Kero, we look forward to visiting Ena and the Nakasendo trail in the near future.

  • It was an exceptional stay. The house was clean with all necessities provided for. What I really appreciated was Koda taking the time to bring us to the shop to buy umbrellas, to drive us to dinner, to drive us to the museum, and even give us a tour of the nakasendo road on the drive to magome. It was hospitality above and beyond what I had expected. Koda and Kero are so friendly and kind. I highly recommend staying here.

  • Koda and Kero were outstanding hosts. Koda picked us up after we walked the Nakasendo trail from Magome to Tsumago (highly recommended) and drove us to his wonderful accommodation perched on a hill overlooking Ena. After making sure we were comfortable, he then drove us to a restaurant of our choice and then came and picked us up again. He also drove us to the station the next day, taking us along the Nakasendo trail for our interest. We had many questions in the lead up to our stay and Koda was very patient and answered everything quickly. He sent us maps and other information to make sure we wouldn't encounter any issues along the way. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Our accommodation was an amazing egg shaped space made completely of wood. A narrow staircase leads to a mezzanine level where the sleeping futons were. A simple breakfast of yoghurt, fruit and toast was provided and Kero insisted on giving us snacks as we left to take on our forward journey. I can't speak highly enough of both Koda and Kero, their amazing hospitality and accommodation.

  • This hostel is great! You have a totally private bunk with plenty of room and the living area is very nice. It is definitely a calm and quiet energy, not a big party hostel which I appreciated. There is a curfew of midnight, so if you are someone that is out late you should be aware of that! Otherwise, it was a lovely stay.

  • Great place to stay! Spotless clean, friendly stuff and very easy to get from the station. If you’re going to Nakatsugawa I strongly recommend this spot.

  • All the participants were satisfactory location. Despite the outdoor feeling, the bed of the permanent tent was comfortable, the music was nice at night and I had a very rich time. Especially I enjoyed having drunk and being relaxing while surrounding a bonfire. The hosts were also very kind, and the freshly baked firs we received were very delicious. I definitely want to use it again. Thank you very much.

  • It is a warm place rich in nature in a place slightly in from the city. Two of the hosts where most of the space was made were also nice and very comfortable. The meal was delicious and enjoyable moment. I would like to ask again.

  • Kajima's glamping spot is amazing. Upon arrival it is set a little off from other houses so you definitely feel like you're camping. The tents themselves are huge and comfy. There is also a common space that we were able to hang out in and also the cafe when it got a little chilly. Kajima went above and beyond and was able to accommodate our transportation to the supermarket, and made sure we were as comfy as possible. His place is definitely off the beaten path compared to other major cities, so taking the train/bus takes some time to get there, but it is manageable.

    Erick2018-04-16T00:00:00Z
  • We loved it at Hugo and Mari's! We felt so lucky to have found their place and can definitively say that our three night stay with them was the best part of our trip in Japan. Not only was their site a perfect relaxing retreat tucked into the mountains, but we were so comfortable there as they welcomed us in and treated as family. We will keep in touch with them and are so happy to have met such kind and fun people. We had breakfasts and dinner there and it was always delicious! Coming without a car worked out very well too as they picked us up and dropped us off from the train station (easy from Tokyo - 3.5 hours) and, one day, even brought us to the bus station; the starting point to a beautiful hike nearby with a cable car (Mt. Hoken). We also happened to be there during a festival weekend for the town which was an amazing experience as they took us with them. Our tent was incredibly comfortable (the beds were really nice!) and they provided us with more than we would ever need (hair products, soaps, lotion, coffee, tea, even pajamas that we were really excited about!). If you get the chance to make it to theirs, don't hesitate to take it!

  • Thanks to the two very hosted hosts, I have made memories of a good trip. Thank you very much. Although I used it for the summer vacation trip with the children, I taught various recommendations such as sightseeing spots, hot springs, restaurants in the surroundings. The location is also easy to access from the exit of the highway in about 20 minutes. It is not in northern mountains, but in the small forest there is a cafe and a Grand Ping facility. You can spend your time swinging by the hammock in the green. The bed was set in the permanent tent, and cleaning and bed make-up were also polite. Minimal amenities such as towels, toothbrush etc are prepared. The toilet was also very clean. I did not use this time, but there was also a shower room. You can have your own meals or you can have dinner and breakfast there as the café is on site. For children with many likes and dislikes, it was very helpful to have another meal.

  • Very pleasant stay Nice atmosphere, common room to meet other guests, neighborhood atmosphere in the bar that is animated (no discomfort) Super comfortable beds Atypical place: traditional house renovated hostel, very beautiful place with the stamp and a special atmosphere, it feels good! Absolutely go eat at izakaya "iramastsou" (name in Japanese - ask the host who recommended this place), which remains our most beautiful culinary and social experience in 4 weeks in Japan :)

  • The cityscape of Nakasendo is located in a very nice place, and the accommodations and the cafe that is attached to it have a nostalgic atmosphere, but the amenities are new, clean and comfortable. The interaction with the owner was also very smooth.
