Places to stay in Pāhoa
Make this hawaiian home, bordering serene Makuu Homestead, surrounded by an opulent natural tropical garden, your special retreat. Three miles from the ocean, and a mile from the main highway, Hawaiian Jungle Hangout offers easy access to eastside highlights--30 minutes from Pohoiki bay (newest black sand beach/part of the 870 acres added from new lava last winter), 35 minutes from Volcano National Park, 20 minutes from Hilo airport, 10 minutes from Keaau town, and 10 minutes from Pahoa Village. The hangout offers 1600 sq. feet of living space. A full kitchen, two bedrooms, plus a den which has a sleeper sofa that opens to a queen round, in a comfortable home on a lush acre of tropical fruits and native plant. Explore the garden within lava rock flows. A memorable place to make your home during your vacation or business stay. Also available on the property is asian fused tropical Hawaiian Jungle Hut. Next to the main house with a separate entrance, the hut is perfect for a couple or single guest, having it's own full bathroom, living room, inside washer and dryer, and kitchenette with a tiki bar. I am usually there, but the hut is also wireless and cable connected and available as a separate rental whenever I'm away.
  • The place is a gem. Lovely house and area just around the corner from Hilo. Liz was caring and had lots of advices and tips. Would love to return. Mahalo

  • Liz's place is fantastic for a couple/family/group of friends who want to just relax in a large space. Very close to Hilo and some nice restaurants the other way (Pahoa?). Liz was extremely responsive via text message and was able to send the housekeeper when we needed help! Mahalo!

  • We are so happy we stayed at Liz's place! The house was on a beautiful private rainforest road (her other rental is attached but we never saw or heard the other renters during our stay). We got there super late but check in is via keypad so it worked out. The house had so much of what we needed. A coffee maker, plenty of coffee filters, cooking oil, spices, enough towels and plates/silverware for all of us, and aloe vera. It's about 15 minutes from Target and other stores, about 2 houes to the Kona side, 20 from airport, and 40 from Volcano national park, but the drive everywhere was incredibly beautiful so we did not mind driving everyday. We saw about 2 geckos every night, we did not mind it but they are unavoidable, so keep in mind if that bothers you. AC worked fine and I was able to sleep through the loud nightly rain but 2 of the people in my group were woken up often from it. So again just keep in mind that if you are a light sleeper you will need ear plugs. Would stay here again and highly recommend!

  • A wonderful place that is clean and quiet with 360 degree views of lush, green forest.

    Pete2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • We got a lot of information before we arrived. Liz explained everything around the house and sent us a lot of information about the area. When we arrived at the house after a long day all of us were so happy because the house was huge and had more than we needed. We really enjoyed staying at the hangout!

  • Great home great location. Loved listening to the sounds of the jungle at night! The communication was a bit much. Too many emails and details. Didnt need to know which cupboard cups were in ect as I can figure all that stuff out so had a hard time finding the time on my trip to sit and read through all the pages of emails. Also bbq wasnt usable as it was covered in mold but other then that the trip and house was fantastic. Loved the decor. Had a great feel and felt like home away from home. Thanks Liz!

    Kate2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • There are a ton of reviews and I read a bunch of them before choosing Liz's place. So, I won't restate everything that has already been shared that is great about this Airbnb. Read the previous reviews for details! We loved staying here. If you are used to the whole Hawaii resort scene on "the dry side" of the island, you might not like the "rainforest side". We loved it! And it was a nice change from the whole "resort thing". I highly recommend Liz's place!

A place for solitude, rest and relaxation, from which to enjoy the wonders of Puna and the east side of the Big Island. Come experience the raw beauty of a lava eruption. The land has been transformed. Fissure 8 and the hardened lava flow is a 10- minute walk from our home. This is destruction & creation; We and the surrounding community of Puna have been transformed by this experience Our guests leave restored and in awe of the magic of this area.
Welcome to Paradise. Our home sits upon a hilltop overlooking the Pacific in the distance. One hears the rustle of palm leaves, tropical birds and coqui frogs at night. The setting is truly beautiful and nurturing with a spacious lawn, fresh tropical fruits and vegetables, caressing breezes and even frequent rainbows. There is a deep sense of peace here. You will be renting a self-contained apartment located on the bottom floor of our home. The wrap-around lanai (porch) overlooks a lush and gorgeous property with ever-present sunshine and cool breezes. There is comfortable porch furniture, a large new barbeque and a wide hammock in the yard. The apartment has two bedrooms, each with its own queen-size bed. There is a full bathroom with walk-in shower, as well as a private, outdoor shower. Between the two bedrooms are a sitting area and kitchenette. The kitchenette includes a sink, full refrigerator, microwave, electric cooktop with two burners, toaster-oven, Keurig coffee maker, French Press, Magic Bullet (shake maker) and all necessary kitchen utensils and condiments (e.g., coffee, tea, salt, pepper, olive oil, basic spices). Our home is centrally located in lower Puna. The rustic town of Pahoa is five miles to the north; the Pacific is five miles to the south. There are many intentional communities a few miles from the house: e.g., Hawaiian Sanctuary (yoga, permaculture, and Hawaiian culture). Our property is 40 minutes from the attractions of Hilo and about one hour from Volcano National Park. North of Hilo are the awesome Akaka Falls and the spectacular Hawaii Tropical Gardens. One could easily spend a week here and not see everything. Guests are encouraged to use us as a resource in planning their stay. We can recommend the best places to go swimming, dancing, yoga, massage, etc. There are a rich variety of places to eat in the area, which are included in a resource book (translated into Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Korean) that we have created for our guests. We love where we live and enjoy sharing our excitement. Sitting on the lanai or strolling on the property, one experiences a dance of tropical weather, an interplay of bright sunshine, billowy, drifting clouds, soft rain showers, and the sensual feel of trade winds. Make this place a home base for your exploration of lower Puna and the east side of Big Island. The price includes the following Hawaiian taxes: Transient Accommodations Tax: 10.4% General Excise Tax: 4.0% No security deposit is required.
In our opinion, Puna is the most fascinating and lush area of Big Island. From Kalapana to Kopoho, from the Red Road to Pahoa--you will be experiencing the richness of living in a tropical rainforest. This is the furthest eastern part of the Hawaiian Islands and has a special place in Hawaiian lore. It attracts those who are adventurous, seeking to expand their spirits, and desiring to live in congruence with nature. It is our belief that there are a very high percentage of mindful people who live here.
  • First off they are goals ok!!! They property it self is so amazing! Everything you would need they provides. From chargers, bathroom amenities, a tour book, even provided eggs, bread, and fruit from their garden. They even have a washer and dryer for your use! The patio is so nice to sit and relax at night and the bistro lights adds just the right touch. It’s so peaceful just listening to the bird sitting out there early in the mornings! The beds were so comfortable. Honestly Robert was so nice and inviting, and the place is amazing highly recommend.

  • We had the best stay here. Directions were super simple to get there. Konrad welcomed us and showed us around the property. They supplied us with all the essentials and more. The bed we slept in was very comfortable. Great local tips in the book for where to eat and things to do. They are very easy to communicate with and happy to answer questions. Hope to be staying here on the next trip! Highly recommend Konrad and Robert's place for your trip!

    Julia2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had an incredible stay at Konrad and Robert's place - if you are looking for a place to decompress and experience the natural beauty and history of the Big Island, we highly recommend staying here! Konrad and Robert left us everything that we could have possibly needed to feel like we were at our own home, including fresh fruit from their garden and some items to make breakfast. We also appreciated their recommendations for food and things to do in the area (all organized in a binder with guidebooks for additional reference). Coming back at night from a day of exploring to the sounds of coqui frogs and occasional light rain was magical, and we sat on the lanai every morning with our coffee enjoying the sunrise and the view of their property. We would love to return some day and hope that other visitors enjoy their stay as much as we did. Konrad and Robert, thank you for being such thoughtful, wonderful hosts!

  • If you are wondering if you should stay here - the answer is yes. Don't hesitate, book it! The area is great in general, but staying here with Konrad and Robert made it truly divine! Upon our arrival they greeted us in person, and had prepared an extraordinary fruit bowl, and set us up with bread, eggs, creamer, etc! The home itself is stylish, comfortable, and cozy. Beds are great! Robes were provided and all the towels you could ever need. The porch is divine, and is where we spent all of our evenings and mornings. The hammock swings are very comfortable, and the full exterior dining table has room for everyone! The kitchen is perfect for preparing home cooked meals and there is a grill (imagine grilled pineapple at sunset 😍) I haven't even mentioned my very favorite part yet! The outdoor shower. This is a divine sunrise and sunset experience. There is also a beautiful indoor shower, but the outdoor one is spectacular! The binder in the house had great local recommendations for meals, experiences and we got some of our best tips from this! The home is situated on stunning grounds with manicured gardens! It is also located very near to the 2018 lava flow, which Robert reminded us to be respectful when visiting as there have been issues with tourists coming in to see it. He told us we could state that we were his guests if someone asked, and that made us feel very comfortable. Other highlights: came fully stocked in regards to shampoo/conditioner/etc. It had a washer and dryer with soap/etc. Rumba to clean the floors! Hands down one of the best experiences our group has ever had traveling. Amazing job guys!!

  • Robert and Konrad are thoughtful hosts. Pāhoa is wicked cool we just loved the vibe and local recommendations our hosts provided. Hope to be back again soon. The place is clean and beautiful. Amazing landscaping and so incredible to see the results of the 2018 lava so nearby. We kept saying to each other every morning “another day in paradise.” ❤️❤️❤️

    Bethany2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Robert’s place was amazing lovely stay. Love the fruit basket! Unit is attached to the main house. Host was very accommodating we arrived really late and he stay up and wait for us. Since we didn’t know the gate needs to be open to get in. Beautifully landscape. Definitely a hidden gem. Wish we were there longer.

    Rose2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • A real corner of PARADISE !! Everything was perfect, from the reception to our departure. They made us a nice basket of local fruit and we had enough to make good coffee and breakfast. PERFECT!! You have to see the neighborhood with its lava flow and the cracks that still smoke !! WOW

  • Excellent place overall, with great hosts, nice easy to get to tropical location and a fantastic value. The hosts responded quickly, were very friendly and very helpful in helping us find beautiful places to check out nearby. Pahoa is nearby and is a really cute town, and Hilo/Volcano/awesome coastline/activities are a short drive as well. Will definitely be back to stay! Thanks Steve and Elizabeth!

  • If you want a place off the beaten path, and kinda remote, this is it. Surrounded by foliage and animal sounds, it is a great place to experience Hawaii. Large bedroom and very private. Host met us initially to introduce us to the place, and was helpful with suggestions concerning Hawaii travel and adventures. We would stay again.

Located in the beautiful Puna rainforest on three acres. A 400 sq. ft. private studio. A lovely rental for a vacation or retreat. Walking paths under a mango forest, beautiful grounds to enjoy. Near the Hilo airport, ocean, and Volcano National Park.
The lovely location is magnificent, simply lush and green. The studio is set up like your living outdoors, but also sheltered from the elements. We are in a tropical setting so we do have tree frogs that sing all night, I do have ear plugs in the unit, most visitors don't even use them, they seem to love the frogs.
Namaste Estates is 3 acres of mango forest and lawns, fenced in and private. You can see no neighbors, the setting is breath taking.
  • We enjoyed our stay here. The cabin was nice and clean. You can hear the birds chirping throughout the day and the coqui frogs 🐸 all night. The outdoor shower is awesome and one of my favorite parts about the stay.

    Abigael2020-03-14T00:00:00Z
  • Tom’s Namaste estates far exceeded our expectations! This is a sacred place of beauty, peace, and a beautiful nocturnal orchestra of tree frogs. Tom gave us a private sound bath with his singing bowls, magical! If you are looking for paradise, look no further than namaste estates. Magnificent energy abounds here, perfect place to pause and reset.

  • It was such a lovely experience being surrounded by the jungle in Tom's beautiful garden. It was the highlight of our trip so far. I also loved the outdoor shower. Tom is extremely friendly and accommodating.

  • Tom and Bea's beautiful estate literally took our breath away and stole our hearts. We stayed for 5 days and fell absolutely in love with this slice of paradise on earth. At night, we slept like babies, lulled to sleep by the lovely sounds of the rainforest and the fresh, beautifully scented air. During the day, we explored the gorgeous and thoughtfully, intricately designed grounds, stopping to meditate by the statues and plant and tree arrangements. Everything in the chalet was perfect. The space was lovely and whimsical and peaceful. The kitchen was great for cooking. The bed was very comfortable. The outdoor shower and toilet were wonderful, private, and so refreshing. And what to say of Tom and Bea? You won't find kinder people around. Hands down our favourite place (and airbnb!) ever. Thank you so, so much for bringing so much peace and happiness into our lives.

Private, newly built bungalow on 3 acres in a lush, ancient mango grove and jungle. 3 mile walk or drive&walk to the new black sand beaches. Screened in lanai with private yard. Easier to get to now due to the new highway 132. Gps is still not up to date so definitely make sure you take the new highway 132 with amazing ocean views.
ALOHA Welcome to Old Hawai’i! Welcome to Puna! Old Hawai’i on the youngest island of them all. Old Hawai’i with the freshest land (still warm!) and black sand beaches on the planet. Old Hawai’i under an ancient mango grove. Around here, the land is green (or black!), the water is blue, and the Aloha is strong. Aged, shaded jungles grow wild and thick out of some kind of story book. Guava. Coconut. Ginger. Noni. Lilikoi vines as thick as your arm. A forest of wild avocado growing from a sea of ferns below. To put it simply: it’s all quite magical. This is where we have built our farm and where hopefully you will be staying. THE BUNGALOW Shaded by 100 foot mangos, down a road of crushed red cinder, you will pass a variety of palms, papaya trees and breadfruit on your way to our 3 acre parcel. Just passed the bananas, across from the Moringa tree is where you’ll find your digs for the night. Notice the Bird’s Nest Ferns growing in the mango just outside your lanai (porch). Personally, I’m fascinated with that Cercropia tree actually growing inside the saddle of the mango, dangling its roots all the way to the jungle floor. It’s a tree inside a tree! But you’ll see. And then you’ll see something else. Something new. Maybe the Passion Flowers are in bloom. Maybe a heavy rain has brought out the moss again. Or maybe you’re already asleep under the ceiling fan, lulled by the gentle wall of sound emanating always from the ‘āina (land) around you. Either way -whatever you’re looking for- it’s a good spot. A quiet spot. A private spot. With over 100 feet between the bungalow and our family home, not to mention a fair share of trees and whatnot- AND the fact that the buildings were consciously built facing opposing directions- you can rest assured that you will have ample privacy, both visually and audibly. I have never measured it out exactly, but your bungalow also has its own “yard” that I would venture to be around a quarter acre (.101 hectare) or so. It is cleared, as is most of the acreage, and dips off into a forest of Strawberry Guava trees, mango and plenty others. The garden and lawn are still establishing around the cottage itself, but if green grass is what you desire- sun or shade- there’s about an acre of it in the front end of the property calling for ya. Frisbee? Yoga? Nap? Kick back under the mango. It’s all good. On August 1, 2018, the last nail went in. This bungalow is an extremely new build, fresh as the fruit at Maku’u Farmers’ Market. At 550 square feet (about 51 square meters ), we designed these accommodations with the single traveller or couple in mind. -Comfortable -Peaceful -Clean -Platform bed (queen) -Ceiling fan -WIFI -Bar top with stools -4 burner stove -Kettle -Pots -Pans -Dishes -Flatware -Refrigerator -Freezer -Coffee -Tea -Hot shower -Toilet -Vanity -Screened porch with seating and dining bar -Locking, sliding glass doors -Screened windows with locking glass -Electric light -Lots of natural light -Stays cool in the heat And did I mention we are entirely off-grid? That’s right! So all utilities are with energy conservation and sustainability in mind. Even our water is collected from the rain (and then filtered through a 5 micron, 30 micron, and UV filter of course!) But don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything differently. Take a long shower. Drink straight from the tap. Use the lights. Charge your laptop. Run the fan until you’re all cooled off and probably asleep again. We want for our guests what we wanted for ourselves when we moved out here: A clean and efficient, relaxing escape. Did I mention to also be within nature without having to battle against it? Because I meant to. Our intent was to live comfortably within nature. We believe this bungalow achieves that. In fact, we know it does. THE GROUNDS AND SURROUNDING Just as ours is, most parcels along the road are 3 acres. Some have been cleared and replanted with orchards to be farmed, some grow wild, and yet others boast sprawling green lawns with painted cottages. One way or another, I consider all the properties around here to be organic farms -not just because they look like you’d think an organic farm should look- but because most folks living on them are impressively conscientious as to what goes into the ground and where their food comes from. It makes for a quiet jungle road of like-hearted botanists (mostly amateur, like myself) and pretty gardens. Rock walls that were here long before us push through the roots of a Hala tree, orchids grow unattended in the canopy above, and coconuts roll in the street. Many properties are hidden but for their driveway by strategically grown clumps of bamboo, Heliconias, or maybe just the jungle itself. Walking down the road does not therefor feel like walking down a neighborhood street at all but more like strolling down a fantastical jungle path where you are the only person in the world. The difference being that there are people in the area should you need them. Best of both worlds really. The illusion of solitude with the safety of numbers. And the solitude isn’t totally an illusion either. Its quiet out here. It’s called the BIG Island for a reason and Puna is still very wild in many beautiful ways. If you like wandering without the worry, there’s plenty to get lost in around here. Even at night, the sky is some of the biggest you’ll ever see. There’s zero light pollution. Full moons are unreal. And if the moon isn’t out at all, well then the cosmos will be illuminated like you wouldn’t believe. The stars feel like they’re just above the trees. Go out on that lawn I was talking about. Bring a blanket. Now look up. Laterz. We have a variety of fruit growing on the property. Some are far more established than others. We ask that guests not pick the fruit themselves, though we are happy to share when the season provides. Also, there is conveniently an organic fruit stand just down the street that might have what you’re looking for. Maybe a 10 minute stroll? And since we’re talking fruit: WASH AND INSPECT ALL FRUIT BEFORE EATING. Just trust me. 99% of the time it’s all good. But that 1% will get ya. Guests that plan on using the kitchen for most of their meals should purchase supplies in Pāhoa Town or even in Hilo on their way from the airport. Also within walking distance (less than 2 miles) are some idyllic tide pools good for soaking when the tides are right. There is another ocean pool a bit further down the way (another mile or so), but I’d recommend taking a car or bike instead of the long, sweaty walk back home. Ocean lookout opportunities and jungle paths are plentiful in the immediate area, and if the new lava flow is what you’re curious about, that happens to be less than 2 miles away as well. NEW BEACHES We are extremely grateful for the new black sand beaches, and as it turns out, we are the closest neighborhood to them. Walking distance. Maybe 3 miles each way? They are fantastic, and totally worth the hike- so remember to pack some shoes! STUFF TO DO I’m sure that if you’re considering Puna for your vacation then you’ve done other research and know just how much the Big Island has to offer. To try and consolidate it all into this write up, even for Puna alone, would never do it any justice. With that said: SUNDAYS: Just outside Pāhoa Town, is the Maku’u Farmers’ Market. It is the biggest and most celebrated farmers’ market on the island. There you will find everything from the freshest island produce to the freshest prepared meals, ranging from Hawaiian style Poké bombs to burritos to açaí bowls. Thai food? Yup. Indian? Double yup. There are t-shirts and orchids and jewelry and chiropractors. There are carvings and kava and massages and honey. Shaded seating is available along with tables. Sit and enjoy some of the cuisine. Take a minute for the live music. Or just get out of the sun and watch the people. After all, it’s Puna! There will most definitely be something interesting to see. ;) WEDNESDAYS: Starting at 5pm, down Kalapana way, is where you’ll find Uncle Robert’s. On the shores of the 1983 flow, every week a large gathering of people come from all over for the dancing, the drinking, the music and the food. The fun. The goods for sale. The people! It is a family friendly, everyone friendly place where you’re sure to have a good time. Parking on the street is free. Or for 3 bucks park a lot closer and take a short walk over da lava to the black sand beach. The wind is really wonderful out there. Then stay for the party. POSSIBLE CONCERNS GENERAL SECURITY/THEFT: I heard a lot of people voice concerns about visiting Puna far before Fissure 8 was erupting. Funny thing is, not one of those people ever lived in Puna. Some had never even been. In my experience, the people of Puna are some of the kindest, most interesting, gentle people I’ve ever come across. Maybe it used to be worse? I don’t know, I wasn’t here. Maybe it used to be better?! Haha. Is there petty theft here and there? Yup. Have we ever experienced it? Nope. Have some of our friends? Yup. Do I worry? Nope. The people and experiences of Puna come in all flavors as does the entire human species and spectacle; in that regard it is no different than anywhere else in the world. Or wait, are you just asking if there’s a lot of weirdos and stuff? Oh yeah for sure! And if you’ve chosen Puna of all places to visit, well then I bet you’re kinda weird too. ;) Look, all I can say is that we feel so safe and love it so much that we decided to build a life and raise our tiny kids out here. I hope that you will feel that same sense of aloha as well. In conclusion: Is it safe? Yes. Absolutely. Just don’t tell anyone. LAVA: For now, and as far as we can see in the near future, the flow has stopped. The closest it came to us was just under a mile away. Thanks to the trade winds, our air was always clean. It remains clean now. Some say it’s the cleanest in the world thanks to the thousands of miles of ocean filtration. Was it scary? Yes. Did we evacuate? Yes and no but mostly no. Though some blockades still remain in lower Puna, all is getting back to normal. There is still so much to do and see! HURRICANES: Hurricane season is from June to November. It’s true that the weather can become extremely heavy if a storm system is in the area, but that’s not really the norm for that stretch of time. Even if it was, I’m not worried about the bungalow. It is as solid and watertight as can be. So long as you are here, there should be no issue with heavy weather and your accommodations. In such an event, a generator may have to be run to compensate for the solar panels, but since we are already off grid, we do not worry much about loss of power or water in an emergency. Honestly though, hurricane season is usually far more sunny days than stormy. After all, it’s mostly during summer in Hawai’i! FIRE ANTS: It is true that there are Fire Ants on the Big Island. It is also true that it’s a big problem. But because I spray, they are not a problem here at our farm. It is the one spray that I use on the land and not very often at that, averaging out to be around 3 times a year. It is not very toxic and dissipates quickly, but I want to be open about it for those that refuse or have reactions to any and all insecticides, no matter which form. To be clear though, you’re not usually going to feel or find a fire ant unless you go digging in the ground, hacking back jungle, or climbing in the trees. Basically, don’t go looking for them. What’s it feel like? Everyone reacts differently. Really they do. To me it feels like Stinging Nettles and then goes away within the hour. Which is lucky since I spend half my life rolling around with them. In conclusion: It’s not a big deal when it comes to enjoying yourself out here. COQUI FROGS: Honestly, I think they sound beautiful. Like birdsong at night. Sure it can be loud, especially when you’re used to no sound at all or the city or traffic instead- but to me and many others, it lulls us to sleep. And they’re only loud like that when it’s been raining -which I know is impossible to predict- but my point is rather that they’re not loud EVERY night, which is good news for light sleepers. If you think jungle sounds might disturb your slumber, I would suggest bringing ear plugs or whatever else might aide you, because I promise, there’s no turning them off. Again, everyone is different, but personally I love ‘em. BOAR: Yes. There are many boar in the area. Mama boar. Papa boar. And even itty bitty baby boar. Luckily, we have not gotten them on the farm. This is because a lot of our border is raised from the land around it, making it difficult for the animals to climb up or it’s simply just not worth their trouble. But they are in the area, I can promise you that. If you see one, just don’t approach it. Snap a photo. Keep your distance. You’re fine. Only if you go stealing baby boars from mama boars are you gonna find yourself having an altercation, and honestly, if that happens…that’s on you. The biggest danger that boars present is their nasty habit of causing car accidents. Pigs dart out in the road whenever you least expect it. Day? Night? Doesn’t matter. The good news is that you can significantly reduce your chances of hitting boar -or anything else for that matter- by driving with consideration to the world around you- which I’m sure you already do! IN CONCLUSION Hope to see ya soon! And if not, may all your travels be wondrous both in ways imagined and beyond. It is a beautiful world with much to see. Aloha.
Explore Puna on old Hawai’i, the youngest island of them all with the freshest—still warm—land and black sand beaches on the planet. The bungalow and family home have trees and space between them and they face opposing directions for utmost privacy.
  • Jason and Guthrie's place surpassed all of our expectations. The space itself was wonderful, beautifully furnished and stocked with all of the appropriate amenities. Being in a more secluded area, we fell asleep every night to the sounds of nature, a welcome retreat after spending the previous few days in Honolulu. Will definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Hawai'i!

  • Jason and Guthrie have a perfect jungle oasis with all the modern necessities you’d ever want! If you’re looking for a quiet space to enjoy then this is for you! Our only regret was not staying longer :)

    Amanda2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • This jungle bungalow was everything we could have asked for in our first night in Big Island. We arrived late at night, and Jason and Guthrie were excellent communicators throughout our arrival. The cozy space is modern, spotless and has all amenities you need! We loved sitting out on the porch and listening to the rain and sounds of the rainforest (the coqui frogs were singing their hearts out)! Awakening the next morning to the sounds of a rooster and taking a morning stroll with their kitties was also such a great experience. We would love to return in the future and 100% recommend staying here!

    Emily2020-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • My husband and I stayed two nights at the jungle bungalow and we wish we could have stayed for weeks. The drive through the new lava fields and then down the jungle road make for an amazing experience in and of itself. The property is so quiet and the crocking frogs were strangely peaceful. We love to camp and be outside so it felt like a night in the tent, only in a comfy bed with great amenities. We also really appreciate their list of things to do and places to eat. We ended up grabbing food at Kaleo's and it was amazing food! Guthrie and Jason were also quick to respond and we loved that everything you could need was found in the bungalow. IF we find ourselves on the Big Island again, we will definitely be back!

    Elizabeth2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Jason & Guthrie’s place, it was quiet and remote which was exactly what we were looking for. It’s in a great location–very close to the Mermaid Pools, the new black sand beach, and several other interesting destinations. Just the road there is magical–it’s truly in a jungle! We ended up cooking the majority of our meals at the bungalow since there were limited options in town (and we like cooking). The facilities at the house are new and were more than adequate for our needs. There's fantastic stargazing, a super peaceful environment, and on top of all this, the unit is off-grid! It’s so cool and inspiring that they’ve built all this with sustainability considerations. On our way out of town, we spotted this beautiful sight of some sprouting coconuts left in the nearby lava fields. This area is a special place where the people here have endured the power of nature and totally respect it. We would absolutely stay here again.

  • If you are looking for a beautiful get away, secluded from the hustle and bustle, this is the place!

  • This was my boyfriend and I's first time to the Big Island for our 1-year anniversary, and excited as we were our flight ended up being delayed 3 hours, so we arrived 3 hours later than expected and still had to make the 2-hour drive from Kona airport to the East side were Jason & Guthrie's place was...they gave us very helpful directions but for some reason we trusted the GPS in the "brand new" SUV we rented to take us there, which allowed us to experience the back country road- bumpy and all (so glad we took other traveler's advice in renting a higher-clearance car) but once we found the place, we were so delighted that not only did Guthrie wait for our very delayed arrival, she welcomed us in, helped with our bags and showed us around. The bungalow was very simply designed but everything was well-thought out, and all the details and things left for us were extremely thoughtful...fresh eggs from the farm, some snacks and ALLL the cooking essentials we didn't knew we needed were waiting for us to use, there was several types of sunscreen on the counter, scuba gear in the drawer, shampoo and soap in the bathroom, enough towels, cold drinking water in the fridge (that was the same, clean taste as the tap water just colder) and just the right layer of sheets and blankets for the cool air coming in through all the windows which we left wide open at all times for that nice breeze to come through. Wifi was spotty at times (it's satellite) and my phone service was hardly ever functioning but it was kinda nice to disconnect a little bit, which was definitely a much needed aspect in this trip. There were little fruit flies which kept finding their way in somehow, but being surrounded by so much nature and having them fly around in our space was only slightly annoying at most. I'm just glad the bigger bugs stayed outside ;) This cute little place is incredibly clean, well decorated with simple, tasteful touches. We had the absolute privilege of starting our trip in this perfect little sanctuary! There was a slight issue with the hot water not turning on one evening and after a day at the beach we definitely needed that shower, the response and fixing of the issue was quick and not much longer later I was enjoying the hot water rinsing off all my sandy toes. While we didn't have the pleasure of meeting Jason we met Guthrie, who was incredibly kind and welcoming and overall they are highly accommodating, thoughtful people who give a great experience and probably one of the best we've had with an Airbnb. Ooh also their cat would come mew at us to let her into the lanai (screened in and complete with lovely string lights) for some pets and belly rubs, which we definitely enjoyed :) Both my boyfriend and I have agreed that when we come back to the Big Island we will definitely be returning for a stay in the jungle with Jason & Guthrie!

    Justine2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Wow. This was one of the most beautiful, peaceful and comfortable air bnb experiences I’ve had! It was spotless, and everything was brand new. You could tell the level of care that went into the space - from sunblock to coffee, the amazing hot shower, adorable deck lights- I wish I could have moved in! The rainforest sounds are so soothing at night, and a gentle rain was perfect to wake up to. Close to the Mermaid Ponds for a secluded swim and also the great Farmers market on Sundays. If I could have stayed forever I would have!

  • Da Bungalow is great. I love the sitting area in the bay window and that the patio is shoved fight back into the jungle and the sound o father tree frogs chirping all night.

    John2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • A very nice place, right in town walking to restaurants and seven eleven.

    Alvaro2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Pahoa is a very cool but very bohemian town. With that in mind TIffany's place is a great value. The location couldn't be more central, and the room is quite spacious for 1-2 people; you could probably manage up to 3. FYI: the bathroom, while private, isn't attached, it is accessible via an external door adjacent to the bedroom. The gardens outside are quite pretty and the surf shop in front is awesome. Check this place out if you're in town!

    Vikram2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I stayed here for two nights. Pahoa is nice town and we enjoyed our stay. Tiffany gave us clear check-in instructions. The room was nice and spacious. We slept to the sounds of frogs which we mistook to be fake bird sounds. The bathroom could have been a bit cleaner and better stocked.

    Srivatsan2020-02-15T00:00:00Z
  • This is the cutest place ever! The decor is quirky and fun and the location is pretty cool. It's within a few blocks of restaurants and a grocery store, but when you're in the bungalow or sitting out back, it feels like you're way outside of town. It rained while I was there and it was the loveliest background noise while I did some homework on the window seat.

    Hollis2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • It is indeed a jungle sanctuary and it was a very cute cottage that felt like I was at home from the moment I entered!

  • Tiffany was very accommodating. She prided extra towels and a blender. The place is bohemian but very comfortable, close to everything in the village, but also in a private garden where you feel at night like you are in ja jungle. Highly recommended place for exploration of the volcano, red road and Hilo.

Situated in the heart of Pahoa town, this studio is located behind our family run business. Pahoa town is the closest you can get to the Kīlauea lava flow, here on the island is Hawai’i. The eclectic “hippy” town enjoys a health food store and plenty of restaurants to satisfy your appetite. This area is for adventurers and those willing to explore the East Rift Zone.
  • We had a nice, cozy stay at Tiffany’s place. We liked that we could walk to the health food store and make our own food in the kitchen. It is conveniently located in the small town, a great jumping off point for exploring Hilo, Puna and volcano. It was excellent to be able to go hiking and to the beach and come “home” to take a nice hot bath! Highly recommend this bungalow.

Studio suite on the east side of the island of Hawaii (Big Island) with more facilities and at a lower price than area hotels!
Pahoa Village is a quaint little town on the southeastern side of The Big Island of Hawaii. This is in the lush, green Puna region of the island, where there are fewer tourist traps and more of the “old” Hawaii of yesteryear. Pahoa has wooden sidewalks and storefronts dating back 100 years, and is a town time seems to have forgotten. Tourists are delighted with Pahoa's fine restaurants, including Thai, Mexican, Chinese and Tuscany Italian... some of the best on the island! There are funky little shops and restaurants, a Sunday farmer's market featuring live music and fresh local fruits and vegetables. And Pahoa is home to the Akebono Theater, which is the oldest in the state! The village of Pahoa is situated in the middle of some of the most beautiful, tropical surroundings, near Kehena Beach which has snorkeling, swimming, surfing and beachcombing. There are lots of unbelievably beautiful crystal clear tide pools to explore and a thermal “hot” pond. Pahoa makes a great Hawaiian getaway, far from the crowds, yet within easy reach of attractions such as Lava Trees State Monument Park, the city of Hilo and a scenic drive to the Kailua-Kona area on the other side of the island.
  • The airbnb is easy to find and located near to downtown Pahoa. Plenty of places to shop and eat around. The house itself is quaint and features all you'd need for a short stay. Served our purposes nicely. Mahalo

  • Ophelia’s place is conveniently located right downtown Pāhoa. We love to stay here when we visit Hawaii. The place is roomy, has full kitchen and two separate bedrooms with queen beds in them. There is also a large dining area and a living room with comfy couches and a tv. The value is outstanding! We will definitely be staying here again in the future.!

    Erica2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect “home base” for my mom and I on our travels. Had everything we needed to make simple meals, and lots of space. Nothing fancy, but a perfect place us to return to after a day of adventuring the island. Also, the new lava flow, and Kalapana night market are close by!

    Sarah2020-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • Good host who is responsive to messages! Great value in a convenient location if you’re visiting the Pahoa area!

    Judy2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This little house has quirky charm that fits Pahoa and lots of room for guests to spread out. It has a large kitchen/dining room, two full-size bedrooms, and a living room with a TV that gets a gazillion cable stations. It's on a main drag--an easy walk to a supermarket, restaurants, and a bank. As a result, there's some street and neighbor noise, but we'd definitely come back.

    Sylvia2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great stay. It was everything we needed for our weekend trip. It’s about 30 mins to Hilo, easy drive. Located in a cute town. Easy to get to the major cities and sights. It was extremely clean and had comfortable beds. I would recommend anyone to stay here.

This little screened-in, open-air Hale is nestled in a native Ohia rainforest between Hilo & Pahoa. The Hale is completely off-the-grid, uses solar power (generator backup) and has rain catchment. Private outdoor bathroom and shower. Secure, covered parking available. There is no kitchen and no refrigeration, but there is a camping stove and utensils plus a cooler to store all food - if your items are perishable, bring ice!
  • I was already excited to stay at this spot, but walking up to Cary's place nestled in the rain forest was magical. Cary is a traveler herself, so each item in this cozy, open-air ohana was clearly carefully chosen. I cooked most meals on the camp stove, loved the outdoor shower, and the bed was super comfortable. Cary was very thoughtful about giving me privacy, but was also very welcoming and provided some great local recommendations for hikes and beaches to explore. I'm so grateful that she's created this magical spot for travelers to visit, and that I got to spend a few nights there. Mahalo!!

  • Super convenient location, walking distance to a bunch of cafes, bars, etc. Clean and comfortable, only complaint was that the bathroom was just a sliding door with no sound proofing :-) It was also a bit noisy, our first night there was someone was yelling outside until the morning. This part of Big Island is lush rainforest with good roads and quiet neighbours. The room you rent is behind my own house, in a log cabin that I built myself in 2019 (registered California Building Company). It has an outhouse (toilet) and outdoor shower. The bedroom has power points and light, Wifi access and a comfy, new (2019) double bed. You have space to park a car, a communal living area with large futon sofa where the pizza oven and sauna can also be found.
The shops in Pahoa and Ke'au are only a 10 minute drive away. Hilo and the airport are 35 minutes drive. Kona airport is 2 hrs+

Aloha! Please note, this is our home we are sharing with you as guests. We are not a hotel, although we do the best we can to make comfortable, clean accommodations available. Please be courteous and understanding. We are still able to give guests a good deal, but I’ve had to raise my cleaning fee from FREE to $25 because of some of the complaints I’ve received. The time $ and energy it takes to host, and especially do the cleaning and laundry, merits this change, as of January 1st 2020. Mahalo.
Aloha. E come mai, welcome to Hawaii, and our home. This is a nice sanctuary before or after a hike, need to recharge, or just exploring Puna for a vacation, let us host you in our jungle home. Five miles from Uncle Robert’s, Kalapana. Space includes full kitchen and living room, also separate locking master bedroom and bathroom. Fully furnished.
Black Sands Community is quirky. And we like to keep it that way. It’s safe to walk around the block, don’t worry, just be aware you may need an umbrella to ward off rain or dogs. Our street is the one of the only paved streets, and it’s a nicer house in our subdivision. Lots of people live off grid. Much like Puna at large, an eclectic person retires to these parts for sure.
  • Great place to stay! Nothing fancy but has everything you could need. The hosts are quick to respond and very helpful!

    Kagan2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • We felt very comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped and the apartment is very cozy. However, you have to like the sounds of nature. The birds are quite loud, but didn't bother us at all. We were also able to use the washing machine which was great. Everything very straightforward.

    Sina2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • This place is great. I mean honestly it’s a fantastic deal having a full kitchen as we don’t eat out a ton. There were plenty of sheets, towels, extra blankets. It was great having conditioner and shampoo in a nice hot hot hot shower. This place has a legit water heater for Hawai’i. It was super nice being able to do laundry and plenty places to hang clothes including a collapsible laundry rack. The owners were super nice and helpful. And one can’t forget the coqui frogs and rain to listen to at night, my fav part! This place is a great deal and parking was right in front of stairs so easy. I would def rent again.

    Sari2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I stayed overnight at Hannah's place. It's an excellent value for the low cost. Comfortable, clean, everything works great, spacious high ceilings. Nice style but nothing fancy. We asked if we could stay an hour past check-out time, and Hannah graciously allowed us to stay as long as we liked into the afternoon.

    Sarah2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Everything perfect 👌 will come again.

    Sebastian2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed five nights and loved it. Most impressed I saw NO bugs/ critters inside the entire time. And you're in a rain forest. Surrounded by lush foliage and flowering vines.

    Danny2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Hannah’s place has the perfect home away from home feel! Rustic decor and ambiance. Great stay! 🤙🏽

    Quiet and safe
  • A great place for me! Everything you need ... refrigerator..microwave ... toaster ... tv only to watch DVDs .products in the bathroom and kitchen are provided. Hairdryer .sipwater .... etc. The house is at the end of the road and is easy to find with Google Maps. I like my private life, and I did not get that. I did not see David, but everything was ready and well explained ... so fine for me !!

    Monique2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • Cute place. Great location for Hilo and Volcano national park. Slept well. Mahalo :)

    Morgan2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • David was a great host and we really enjoyed our stay at his place! It was very clean, big, comfortable and had everything we needed. It's in a great location, close to the ocean and is in a beautiful neighborhood. We definitely recommend it to anyone traveling through and hope to stay there again next time we're in the area. Thanks again David!

    Carolyn2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for the money. So hard to find reasonably priced places without exorbitant cleaning fees on Airbnb any more but this is an exception. Well appointed, easy check in/out, nice and quiet area.

    Justin2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • House was very central to places that we wanted to visit. Driving to and from his house was very easy and we felt very central. The bed was so amazing and soft! The house itself is very clean and well equipped for our needs. The ceiling fans I thought would not be enough to make the house nice and cool to sleep in, but I was very wrong. If it’s not enough for yourself, the host has extra portable fans in the house already if needed. He was a great host and very response, would defiantly recommend the house.

    Fumiya2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • David was very approachable and friendly. Space was very functional for us with ability to cook, eat outside on the picnic table, and watch a movie. We were out touring most of the day but loved coming back to a private space to unwind. Price was very fair.

    Michelle2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • This place was so cozy. I loved the privacy of it, the spaciousness. It has a perfect little living room to lounge in. And you can't beat the value!

Recently renovated big room with air conditioning! Our home lies next to the forest, most of the view outside of the windows is green with blue skies. From this room, you will awake to the sunrise over the forest, and this area is so peaceful you can hear the soul of the forest. This is a room on the second floor recently renovated, the guests will be sharing a bathroom, living room and kitchen with other guests.
22 mins from Hilo, 35 mins to Volcanoes National Park, 10 mins from Keaau or Pahoa, 4 miles to the ocean shores.

  • I had a great experience!! Danny, the host, was nothing but kind the whole time. He provided A LOT of local tips that were super helpful and gave me an experience I otherwise wouldn’t have had. The room was also air conditioned which was nice, even though it wasn’t much needed. But overall it was awesome and I would totally recommend this place to anyone, as the host was nice and welcoming.

  • The cottage was very charming !!! Everything you would expect from the charm of a Hawaiian cottage, simple with few kitchen elements. Ashley is the most helpful host I've ever seen ! I had problems with car rental and she was so helpful and reactive to help me find a solution. Thank you again so much !!

    Constance2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was very clean and I enjoyed the bathroom in the garden, even though I had to walk 1 min to get there. It was fun to hear the frogs at night and the birds during the day. The frogs could be a bit loud sometimes, but their song quickly became white noise. Overall, a very nice experience! Thank you!

Recipient of the Airbnb "SuperHost" award for consistently high guest reviews The Bungalow is situated on a 1 3/4 acre of jungle in rural East Hawaii. We are located between Hilo and Pahoa and close to whale watching, perfect for long walks along the cliffs at Kaloli point and for listening to the Hawaiian birds singing.
The Bungalow has a covered Lanai for enjoying the outdoors and looks out to a Banana grove. There is a small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker with tea, sugar and coffee for the guests to use. The bedroom is large and the on suite bathroom has a tiled shower with a window where you can view nature while you shower. Every window has a view of the jungle outside and the bedroom has a large closet and a queen bed. You can lie on the bed and look out the French doors onto your private lanai.
The neighborhood is quiet and very green with palms, flowers and no traffic or traffic lights.
  • I love the setting! Beautiful flowers and trees surrounding a comfy bungalow. The space is simple , clean, and welcoming. The coffee is delicious!

  • Gav looked after us for our trip to Keeau; her communication is excellent and you won’t find a better space for your budget! Fresh property fruit was also a huge bonus! Location is perfect midway point between Pahoa and Hilo, very close to tourist stops but also perfect for quiet relaxation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay even though it was short! Highly recommend staying with Diana and Lando!

    Jen2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay on the Big Island, and the bungalo worked great for our trip! We were only in the area for 3 days, and the location made it very convenient for our visits to the National Park and other excursions, somewhat midway between Hilo and the park. We found a grocery store and a good Thai place nearby, about 6 mile drive, and it was about 20 minutes to get into Hilo for more places to eat, etc.. The privacy of the bungalo was great, and we loved sitting on the covered porch, enjoying the fresh air, the lush view surrounding the property and the soundscape of all the local creatures. It felt remote while being fairly close to everything we needed, only a short drive away. Car is necessary for getting around, but that is probably the case for the island generally. Food prep is limited for this spot, so good to plan accordingly if cooking is on the agenda.

    Laura2020-03-06T00:00:00Z

This beautiful and spacious 2 story 4 bedroom house set in a very safe neighborhood is set on a hill with a wonderful view of Keaau's lush land and the ocean view! This house has plenty of spots to gaze at the view including a large patio and large family room with a 65" TV and a dining table. The style is light bright and upscale, the high ceilings are finished natural wood and there is an archway that adds to the house's unique beautiful feel.

Very quiet and peaceful, totally Nature. Come enjoy the frog noise at night and birds in the early morning.
  • We were a little surprised by the open air design but it was well thought out and put together with the necessary amenities. Glad we were able to stay here, thanks Ashley.

We’ll be back!

After staying in lots of private rooms in people’s houses recently, we appreciated having our own space for a reasonable price.

500 sq ft - 1BR/1Bath, kitchenette, 2 single beds that push together for 1 king. 1 acre yard w/ Hawaii fruits and flowers. Deck/dining room, some snorkel/swimming/sports gear, central location to all East Hawaii sights. Cable TV, high speed internet. It is rural so kokie frogs, rooster and dog barks are a factor.
Great yard, central location and bus route 1/2 mile away. clean, like new. Improvised kitchen sink, all else is fully set up. I do an odd thing in that I do have older carpets, pads, plastic around the 1 acre yard as weed control.
Quiet, peaceful. 1/2 mile of well maintained grave road from studio to the pavement. Country living. Small ohia forest, and fully landscaped acre yard.
  • John is the sweetest and so caring. We love him as our host. He is like a dad figure. He offered us a little breakfast when he didn’t have to and recommended us places to visit when we arrived.

    Sarita2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • John’s place was a great spot to stay, in a good location not a far drive from Hilo, at a great price. Communication was very easy because he is usually home and we would see him a few times a day. He got us anything we asked for, gave great advice about local spots, and was thoughtful to bring us fresh fruits to try from his gardens. I would definitely stay here again, and I would recommend Johns place to anyone traveling to Hawaii. Thank you for the great experience John!

    Joseph2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • As a teacher I give John an A+. John went out of his way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. His place was clean and stocked with food and water (at no extra charge). When we had trouble with our rental car, John went above and beyond the call of duty, giving us a ride into Hilo to pick up our rental car on monday morning. We cannot say enough, or recommend John enough to other travelers. If we ever visit the Big Island of Hawaii again, we will most certainly stay at John's place. John is most certainly a "Super Host."

    Daniel2020-01-30T00:00:00Z
  • John was an A-MAZING host!! He was so responsive since the moment I booked the Airbnb. He shared so many places to visit and eat at and he would check up on us every once in a while to make sure we were okay & doing well! If you’re looking for a host that cares about you, wants to make sure you have a great experience, stay with John! He is a ray of sunshine.

    Nauleo2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • The accommodation was perfect for our requirements. The kitchen is sufficient for simple dishes (1 hotplate). John is very friendly, obliging and uncomplicated.

    Timo2020-01-13T00:00:00Z
  • John’s place was exactly as advertised. It was clean and had all the amenities we required. John was very responsive throughout our communication via the Airbnb messaging app and helpful during the check-in process. The Airbnb was a great value considering the high cost of lodging on the Big Island. I enjoyed my time at John’s Airbnb and would recommend it.

    Myles2020-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • Expect a generous and humble host! John is very responsive to your requests and super friendly! He gave us what we needed and also gave us a tour in his yard!

The 384 SF cabin studio, at the back of the main house, is on an acre of garden with fruits and flowers. It’s a perfect retreat from the urban lifestyle, but includes easy accessibility and convenience similar to that of urban cities. This studio has a private kitchen, a private bathroom, a queen-size bed, and a sofa bed.
I love to travel. When I travel, all I am looking for is a nice, cozy, clean, and convenient accommodation with reasonable price. When I started this vacation rental business, I am trying to offer my guests a accommodation that meet my personal wishes. It is not a five star hotel but it can give you a wonderful retreat when in the mean time you can explore the beauties of the Hawaii Big Island. 10 minutes to Pahoa town. 35 minutes to Hilo Airport. 40 minutes to Hilo. 15 to the ocean. 20 minutes to Warm Pond. 50minutes to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The house is in the middle of a tropical residence community called Leilani Estates Subdivision. The nearest town called Pahoa. It has restaurants, shopping center, cafes, post office, banks, hotels, bars.
  • Such a cool place. It felt like we were inside our own little jungle. The vegetation was beautiful, so the plant lady in me was in heaven. Would definitely stay here again.

    Claire2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • It's a cute cottage and has everything you'll need for a restful stay. Any time I had a question, I received a quick response and I was able to take advantage of the amenities such as the laundry room. Spending about 8 days there, I was really grateful to have it. The only minor downside is when it rains, it gets humid. Nothing a de-humidifier won't fix. Had a great time and would recommend this to everyone.

  • Lovely, clean and cozy cabin ! It’s easy to find location and check-in/out. We definitely had great time and experience here. We will choose to stay here next time if we come to the big island ! 💞

    Liu2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot on the South-East side of the island. Had an amazing time there, lots of fruits and goodness growing on this side of the island. Offers a cool garden and relaxed space to stay!

Downstairs of a two story custom built home. Fun, musical, artsy decor, comfortable living space with privacy to relax. Bathroom with shower and shared laundry. Outdoor kitchen with microwave, mini fridge, stove, oven and bbq. Outdoor dining area. Hawaiian Paradise Park is centrally located, approx. 30-40 min. from Volcano National Park, Hilo town and nearby beaches, Po'hoiki and Honoli'i for surfing. **2 bedroom rate available $89/nt airbnb.com/rooms/24652418
Hosted by artists who love color. Not a beige home. We are on Railroad Ave, our home next to a property that was 1 of original train stations. Legend is that people threw out their mango seeds, so this part of HPP is part Mango grove. It is a kipuka, meaning the last lava flow, went around this area, like an island, and therefore has more growth/dirt.
Hawaiian Paradise Park is zoned as Ag land. We still have wild bamboo orchids that grow along the road. We are the orchid isle! Our road is not paved yet, though many in HPP are. Each lot is an acre. Residents might have livestock, exotic birds, there are palm orchards, and nurseries, etc. The ocean is 20 blocks from us. We go there to walk, enjoy
  • Lonny’s place is awesome!! The pictures don’t do it justice, the vibe is out of this world and Lonny completes it with his hospitality and personality. Would defiantly stay again for longer

    Andrew2020-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Lonny is great host! He has a wonderful home, beautiful landscaping, friendly dogs, a gangster cat carl with a super chicken that dishes out fresh eggs for your breakfast. Carl is a gangster, just a super loving cat! His dogs know exactly how to give those puppy eyes. The bed is cozy, living area comfy. Kitchen area is outside and you'll see cool artwork every place you look. Very awesome experience overall. I highly recommend staying.

The room is located at the back of the house with two windows and a fan. You so share the bathroom with the room across the hall. Unlimited WiFi. There is a living room with a 60 inch tv that has cable. Also has a full kitchen. We are 30 minutes from Hilo, 40 minutes from airport, and less then an hour to Volcano National Park. This home is located deep in Hawaiian Beaches subdivision and is close to the ocean. This home is simple, clean, and safe. The room and most of the house has been recently redone. Pahoa ia lush and green due to the abundant amount of rain. There are coqui frogs at night that help sing you to sleep. The ocean cliffs are a 5 minute walk. Kitchen has anything you would need to cook your meals and a large fridge for any groceries you may have that do not fit in the mini fridge. I love that the ocean cliffs are just a few minutes down the road and can easily walk there. We do not have neighbors on either side of our house so it's nice and quiet. Da store is 5 minutes away for quick stop to pick up items. Pahoa village is 10 minutes away which has Longs Drugs, Malama Market, Kaleo bar and Grill and a few other shops and restaurants. Hilo is 30 minutes away. Volcano national park is less than an hour away.

  • I absolutely loved staying at Dee’s place! Her home was tucked away in a safe neighborhood, and she not only detailed great local spots to check out, but she was incredibly prompt with her answers to my questions. If her place is available - get it while you can! I highly recommend.

    Bo2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great location. Great instructions, easy to find. Bad cell reception in the neighborhood but Dee warned me about that so it was not a surprise or problem. House was clean and comfortable.

    Jenny2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Dee was great. Great with getting back to me with all my questions. Thanks for checking up on me on my first day. The room was nice and clean. There was a bit of a misty smell, but I didnt mind that as much as my husband did. Great lock on the door even though it was a safe neighborhood. The shower was very loud and squeaky. But overall everything was great Thanks for a great stay.

  • Dee's Place has all the comforts of a home away from home. I Highly recommend you check it out. Didn't get a chance to meet Dee but she's very quick to respond on the website. My Husband and I will definitely be back and tell all our friends about this place.

  • Mark’s place was well above what we expected, beautiful property. We would stay again in a heartbeat!

  • Very clean and comfortable place to stay, great location with grocery stores within at 10 minute drive. Close to Hilo and to a black sand beach to the south. Easy check in and Mark was quick and concise with communication, I honestly have no complaints about the stay.

  • Very clean space with comfortable bed! Easy to find and convenient for adventuring south of hilo! Be sure to bring water as most homes are on catchment in this area

    Brittney2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • This location is perfect. It's very close to Volcano National Park, so we were able get to the park early. The room is nicely furnished with everything you need. The bed is extremely comfortable and the bathroom is a great size. Can't say enough good things about this place!!!

    Kate2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • This place was perfect for us. Cleanliness is always top priority. We got in late and Mark made sure the lights were on waiting for us. On the bed were clear instructions, a guide book for the island and an already purchased entrance fee for the week for the nation park. Little details make it. A cooler, beach chairs and towels. Even ear plugs. (although its so quiet I'm not sure who would need them). We never needed the air conditioning. The window open was cool enough. And we felt safe the whole time. I will say, it is a small place. If you pack a lot it may annoy you to be stepping over your bags. We pack light and found the space just right. You're never in the room anyways. Thanks Mark! We'll be back.

    Bree2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • The room is just as advertised. It was clean, comfortable and has everything you need to make a simple breakfast and a cup of coffee. If you’re on a budget and have a rental car this place is a great option and I would not hesitate to stay here again.

This is a beautiful new build with great attention to detail. This includes a private bedroom, bathroom and gourmet kitchen with everything you could possibly need for a perfect vacation. This property is 10 blocks from the ocean on the dead-end side of the street, with very little traffic. The lanai overlooks our 1-acre avocado orchard that has over 60 avocado trees, lychee, papaya, mango, banana, pineapple, mandarin, and lemongrass. You are welcome to all you want as fruit ripens!
There are no added fees or hidden costs!!!! We include everything so that there are no surprises!! However, please note that AirBnB does add a fee to all bookings, over which I have absolutely no control. We have stayed in AirBnBs and wanted this to simply be the best, most thoughtful place you could ever wish for. We have picked only the finest quality mattresses, sheets and pillows for your comfort. There is no need to lug a crib or highchair as we supply both. We also supply 4 boogie boards, 5 sets of high-quality snorkeling gear, a cooler with ice packs, plush beach towels, beach blanket and mat, beach umbrella, an exercise mat for yoga, travel coffee mugs and stainless water bottles for you to borrow. The kitchen comes fully stocked with oil, salt and pepper, other spices, teas, coffee, turbinado and coconut sugars and cocoa powder...perfect for making smoothies. Cookware and cutlery are high end. We supply cutlery and dishes for babies and toddlers as well. You have the choice of drip, French press or coffee maker for you coffee enjoyment. There is a toaster, blender, food processor and coffee grinder for all of the gourmet meals you might whip up. As of 1/28/2020, we now have high-speed internet- enough to stream movies use your phone easily, and browse the internet!!
This is a very quiet neighborhood on the dead-end side of the street. If you are from the city, this area will feel rural to you. Lots are 1 acre and not all are built on. There are no street lights so it can be quite dark at night. You will rarely hear cars, only coqui frogs and birds. There are amenities such as sit-down restaurants, grocery store, post office, gas station, McDonald's, Subway, hardware store, laudromat, fruit stand and coffee house in nearby Keaau. There are also amenities in nearby Pahoa. If you are here on Sunday, the Maku’u Market is a must-see/must-experience!!! Drive on 130 towards Pahoa and it’s on the left (it’s quite close to Avocado Acre). You pay a couple of bucks to get in, but it’s so worth it- plenty of different vendors and lunch choices. Lots of locals hang out with their families all day. This is an island experience not to be missed!! Make sure you take cash to get in and buy...some vendors don’t take credit cards.
  • Welcoming and well thought out comfortable space. Plenty of towels. Beautiful clean property. Kelly is very responsive and a wonderful hostess.

    Peggy2020-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • This is the most well planned, clean, beautiful, private, quiet Airbnb I’ve ever stayed at! Every details was thought of... do you prefer drip coffee, French press, or pour over? All options are available for you! & the grinder!! 🥳 The kitchen is soooo well equipped & clean, we could prepare any meal effortlessly! Awesome blender by the way! The indoor space although small is well planned too & feels spacious. & the lanai & grounds are so inviting! To my surprise, the wild pigs & piglets were so peaceful & fun to watch, we looked forward to seeing them every night. I was also amazed that we had no issues with bugs of any kind. The containers for wet waste, trash, & recycling are simply brilliant ~ made it easy for us to do the right thing with our trash. Also we so appreciated the help & loved our time with Walter & Timaima ~ they are truly special people. Next time we will plan our trip further ahead so we can stay longer at Avocado Acres! Thank you all so much!!! ❤️

    Jessica2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • We loved staying at Kelly’s place. We loved how comfy and unique the space was, and how detailed the space was created and furnished. We had three adults and all slept wonderfully in each bed. We enjoyed the sound of nature at night. We enjoyed the picturesque views and home.

    Cara2020-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Our family really enjoyed Avacado Acres. Everything seems really new and Kelly has thought to stock almost anything one could need. Some of the nice extras we haven't had elsewhere include plenty of beach towels, cold water in the fridge, and ice packs for packing a cooler. A few of things that we found that delighted us were for the kids; a step stool to reach the bathroom sink, a first-aid kit for scrapes, and some sand toys to take to the beach. Walter and Tamima were super friendly and accessible for anything we needed.

    Nicholas2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We chose Avacado Acre because we wanted to experience Hawaii as authentically as possible. From the first night it was nothing short of magical. We easily found our way by the light of the moon and stars, feel asleep to the song of the coqui frogs, and awoke to the most magical setting. The location was perfect for adventures to the nearby waterfalls, Farmer's Market, volcanoes, beaches and goat farms. We loved starting each morning watching the beautiful birds as we sipped coffee on the lanai. Wandering through the fruit trees looking for ripe treasures was wonderful and watching the rain fall and experiencing a tropical rain storm was a highlight for our family! Walter was a delight and we loved chatting with him and are so grateful for the tip on where to watch the sunrise. Thank you Kelly and family. Our stay at Avacado Acre will not soon be forgotten.

    Christina2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Kelly’s place was beautiful and she was very responsive. We had a slight issue on the first night and she fixed it quickly and with no problem. We enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend it to anyone! Thank you Kelly and family!

Our small country home, "Hale Ohia Melemele", is named after the yellow ohia trees on the property. Blossoms are special We are located on the East side of the Big Island in Hawaiian Paradise Park 16 miles from Hilo and only 2.7 miles to beautiful and dramatic rocky coastline. Because we are in a rural area it is best to have a car unless you are a seasoned hiker. Bo'sun is a perfect for a single person traveling, a couple or an addition to the Hideaway if you are 3 to 5 persons.
The Bo'sun Bunk is a screened 8'x 12' private room. It has a raised full futon (bunk bed style), a table and chairs. It shares a small bathroom, outdoor shower, laundry and Lanai, (screened porch with large table, small frig, bar area) with our hideaway that sleeps two or three.
Eastern shore of the big island is rural with a feel of "old Hawaii". Hawaiian Paradise Park is a community south of Hilo. It sits on the Maku'u shore which offers a beautiful view on the eastern side of the Big Island. It's been said that this is one of the best places to watch humpback whales while they are here for the winter. We are approximately two miles inland. Take a cup of tea or coffee and sit and watch the sunrise or a glass of wine to watch the glow of sunset off the clouds.
  • Best airbnb experience ever! Thank you again Nancy and Terry for your hostpitality it was such a wonderful experience and exchange!

  • Fantastic home and amazing hosts! Exceeded all expectations and made the experience in Hawaii that much better. Thank you!

    Hannah2020-03-02T00:00:00Z
  • One of the kindest couple I have ever met in my life. Their home is right in the middle of a small rain forest and you will be delighted in the finest details they have put together. You will find immense peace within the huge variety of plants within the house, or the loud croaking of coqui frog that put me to sleep every night. The shower is in an open but enclosed area right under the blue sky, which in itself was a beautiful experience for me. The knowledge Terry has, amazed me throughout my stay - local sightseeing, history, flora and fauna or even reading actual maps. The room I stayed in was very spacious, comfortable and ensured my privacy. If you are staying in Hilo side of the island, you just cannot miss this experience. Thank You, Terry and Nancy. Definitely visiting you both some time in future.

  • We thought the bungalow was wonderful! It was clean and felt remote which made it very peaceful. The only con is that it is at least a 10 minute drive to anything, even further for Hilo or volcano national park- just something to keep in mind.

  • This bungalow is a perfect home base for a few days in and around Hilo. It is tucked away from other homes, so you feel like there's nobody else around. There are no street lights on the road, which made for incredible stargazing. They also provide snorkels, beach towels, and beach chairs. It was also so easy to get to and from the airport, and only about 40 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park. This spot is a gem!

  • Very Clean, unique, and tranquil bungalow to return to after our adventures on the Big Island. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay near Hilo. Very private and has everything you will need.
