Places to stay in Portgower
My self catering flat stands in my family’s Sutherland croft, on a hill approximately 153 metres above sea level. The property is compact and cosy, with electric central heating, and it is my priority that visitors have everything they need for a comfortable stay. The lounge/kitchen area is fully equipped with hob, oven, microwave, toaster, steamer, fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, pots, crockery, cutlery, table and chairs, Sky TV, Wi-Fi being installed, comfortable sofa-bed and armchair. The bedroom has a kingsize bed, and ample wardrobe storage. For the shower and washbasin, I have provided Arran Aromatics lovely hand- and body-wash products to relax and soothe you. Because this is a highland home, I have kept a certain sense of tradition in the decor, with a variety of plaid fabrics, and some old photographs and objects which I hope you will enjoy looking at. You may browse a selection of books by a diversity of Scottish authors. The views are amazing. From the front windows, the Moray Firth in all its moods leads the eye south west to the distant Cairngorms, or the vast open horizon of the North Sea. On the other sides, the views are framed by some of the oldest hills in Europe. Once mighty Alps, the passage of time and ice ages have worn these to gentler slopes of fractured volcanic rock. Thinly coated in peat and heather, they are the very private habitat of such fauna as grouse, stoat, and hare, and the equally public domain of seasonally grazing sheep, cattle and growing numbers of red and roe deer. You might simply be a bird of passage, staying briefly here while travelling to or from the Northern isles of Orkney and Shetland, or experiencing the wonderful North Coast 500 route. On the other hand, you might want to make this your base for a while, as you explore the area known as the ‘Common Grazings’ - 1011 hectares of wild hillsides, which reach almost to my back door. With wildlife spotting, fishing for tasty little brown trout in a nearby burn, finding examples of iron age archaeology, or simply strolling through the glorious spaciousness, where you’ll rarely encounter another human being, you might not want to travel much further during your entire stay, than down to the village of Helmsdale for supplies, souvenirs or eating out. Being only about half a mile from the A9, it is also easy to base yourself here, and travel up the Strath of Kildonan to the North Coast, follow the East Coast to John O’ Groats, or take a day trip across to Ullapool and the West. Close to hand, Helmsdale village (3 minutes away by car, 20 on foot) has a heritage centre (Timespan) with a riverside cafe. On the main street visitors will further find two restaurants, a takeaway, two bars, a mini market, a gift shop and an old-fashioned ironmonger’s store. Helmsdale also offers golf, river and sea fishing opportunities. Visitors may travel here by car, bike, train, bus or, of course, on foot! I can arrange collection from the train station or bus stop. If you plan driving here in the winter months, I strongly recommend winter tyres. My driveway is rather rough, though everyone seems to manage, driving carefully. No matter when you plan to visit, remember this really IS the great outdoors, so bring weatherproof clothing and footwear, and midge/tick repellant in the summer. I am not a professional linguist, but I speak some French, Italian, German and Polish. I look forward to welcoming you to The Stroops!

Fresh air, fantastic safe environment, true Scottish Highlands. Access to Orkney, West Coast, Wick, John O Groats. Hill walking and river walks which are fantastic take a drive up the Strath for some drop dead scenery . rent a gold mining pan and go up the river hunt for hold .. full instructions.. with the pan from the shop at the harbour ! Great for kids and adults alike .. tradition is for the men of the village to pan for gold all there lives and create the first daughters wedding ring from the gold they find .. give it a go . History The first written reference to the people of this area, at the end of the first century AD comes from the Roman historian Tacitus, who described the people as tall, red headed men who fought bravely with long swords and round shields. St Ninian came here about 390 AD and preached at Navidale. Where the old church yard now stands there was a chapel which was burned down during the Reformation in 1556. Helmsdale came under the Parish of Kildonan which gets its name from the pictich word Kil or Cill or Cell, this meaning the cell of St Donan, patron saint of the Strath, from 580 AD. Christianity, however, came under attack in the 9th century when the Vikings began their raids into the North of Scotland. Tharfin the Great conquered Scotland down to the Moray Firth, and certain cairns and standing stones are said to mark the sites of many ferocious and bloody battles. It was at Helmsdale (from the Norse Hjalmundal Dale of the Helmet) that a great battle took place between two Nors chiefs Swein and Olvir Rosta. Swein won a great victory and Olvir's men retreated to some houses which were burned with all their inmates. Olvir escaped by crossing the Helmsdale river and was not heard again. Swein and his men committed many ravages in Sutherland before returning to their ships. As the Vikings mixed with the native population, the clan system evolved and the way of life changed little from century to century. There were periods of blood and strife mainly caused by lust for land and cattle. The chieftain had power of pit and gallows over all men and yet was regarded by his clansmen as protector and father figure. Helmsdale Castle The Couper Park is the site where the Helmsdale Castle once stood. Although, alas it became a rapidly crumbling ruin and was completely demolished in the early 1970s to make way for the new A9 road bridge over the Helmsdale River.

  • This was absolutely perfect. My favorite part being the amazing fireplace in the living room. This was a perfect spot to sit with a glass of wine after a long day’s drive. The room itself was very cozy — I haven’t had that good of a sleep in a while! Kitchen was fully equipped (coffee and French press, too). Very happy with the stay. Thank you!

  • We felt at home with Kathleen, she gave us a very warm welcome and it was like getting to know each other forever. The house is located between Helmsdale and Brora, so outside, but you will be rewarded by the incomparable view. The room is huge and here you have a great view of the sea. Just beautiful! Everything was very lovingly prepared, including the breakfast. We would definately stay at Kathleen again and stay the next time longer than one night! Thank you, Kathleen!

  • Fabulous house, very warm and friendly person. 5 Star bed and bathroom, and ome of the best view i saw before. Love the story from this house. We had nice talks, good teas and became a lot of good tipps.

    Sarah2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed with Kathleen on the way home from Orkney to Dundee. It was an ideal place to break the journey because we got off the ferry at Gills Bay about 6pm and reached Kathleen's in a couple of hours. Kathleen's house is just off the A9 and has spectacular views. Kathleen welcomed us warmly. Our room was huge with amazing views of the sea, possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept and an en-suite shower room. Everything was absolutely spotless. Kathleen was friendly and open and obviously enjoyed being a host - we felt nothing was too much trouble and she put a lot of work into preparing meticulously for her guests.

The Tall Pines Yurt has been lovingly built within the grounds of our home on the hill at Gartymore, Helmsdale, which is on the North Coast 500 route. It comprises a double bed, bed-settee, log burner, cooking area, toilet, shower, private garden with BBQ and outside furniture and a private parking area. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful location which has stunning views over the Moray Firth.
Your stay will be a unique experience as this is a traditional Mongolian dwelling with double layers of insulation and a log burning stove to keep you warm and cosy. The yurt has its own private garden, with seating and BBQ area. There is also a bistro table and two chairs on the decked veranda.
We live on the hill overlooking the Moray Firth. It is a very quiet, rural area with sheep and cattle in the fields in front of our property. There are plenty of places to walk nearby and if you are lucky you may even spot a few deer. At the bottom of the hill you will be able to access the beach and see the seals in the water. There is a path there which takes you into the village via the river estuary.
  • First time ever staying in a yurt - and would do so again! So quaint and surprisingly spacious for me and my brother. The fire was lit once we returned from the town and was so toasty warm. All the equipment to cook for yourself if you wanted. The bathroom was set up beautifully. Would recommend as an alternative accomodation 😃

    Esther2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing yurt about 15 minutes walking from Helmsdale. It's very cozy and we very much enjoyed our stay with Jackie. She was very accommodating showing us all the features of the place. The log fire was an especially nice touch

  • A great wee yurt to be off grid! We had a really relaxing night in the yurt, very quiet and comfortable. There are lots of thoughtful touches making the trip very comfortable. They also have two very sweet and friendly dogs!

    Gemma2019-08-18T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay in the yurt was fantastic! Jackie and Paul were excellent hosts and out kids loved that their dogs (Max & Holly) and chickens regularly checked in on us. The yurt itself is extremely comfortable and everything you would need is provided. The location overlooks Helmsdale with great views out over the north sea. We will definitely be back.

    Andrew2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is lovely. Quirky and romantic with sweet extra touches. We enjoyed the dogs visiting and the chickens. It’s really quiet except for the crashing of the waves which just add to the magic of the place.

Lovely warm spacious home in the heart of the Helmsdale Village. Close to all local amenities - shops, restaurants, pubs and Cafe. Lovely sights within a stones throw - the harbour, the famous Helmsdale River, golf course and many walks for all fitness abilities. Comfortable well equipped accommodation for families, groups, couples or individuals. An ideal stopover on the North Coast 500 route for weary travellers to relax and unwind in a peaceful location.
Historic house built in the early 1900's and fully modernised. I've tried to keep it as true to original as possible. Please bear in mind there is only 1 bathroom as en-suites weren't the rage when this was built! However, the shower pressure is excellent. The kitchen is large and boasts an 8 burner range cooker and American fridge freezer. Please cook or bake to your hearts content. There is super fast fibre broadband WiFi throughout the property. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video on some of the TVs.
Helmsdale is a small friendly village set in a peaceful location with stunning views. There’s plenty to see and do - beach walks, gold panning, fishing, shooting, mountain and trail walks and a lot of wildlife around too. Helmsdale is a Sutherland coastal village steeped in history and with a strong maritime tradition. The village boasts a good level of local amenities for both visitors and residents. The area has an association with Viking history and attracts a great many tourists. The village is renowned for its gold panning at Kildonan and the Timespan visitor attraction depicts the regions diverse history.  The village has approximately 750 inhabitants and is one of the main centres of population in Sutherland. It also has an excellent links golf course and is in easy reach of the famous course at Royal Dornoch which lies to the south. The region is also renowned for its whisky production, with distilleries in Brora, Wick and Tain.  Slightly further afield the Falls of Shin and Dunrobin Castle provide an interesting day out. Touring and genealogy are other favourite pastimes, together with the prospect to visit nearby Scottish castles and other historic sites. These attractions combined with the varied natural scenic beauty of the surrounding area make it highly popular with a wide range of visitors and tourists. For the outdoor enthusiast the Highlands of Scotland are famous for spectacular scenery and rugged mountains, a reputation which is comfortably upheld by Helmsdale. The wonderful un-spoilt scenery of the famous coastline and surrounding hills combine to make this a most attractive area.  For walkers the beautiful Sutherland terrain offers varied degrees of challenge from the more leisurely hillwalking to more stretching mountaineering. A wide range of birdlife attracts the ornithologist and the area has a huge appeal to the naturalist. The local rivers appeal to large numbers of sports fishermen looking to net trout or salmon.

Relaxing and comfortable crofters cottage on the Helmsdale strath, great view, wildlife and walks or just relax by the fire. Comfortable accommodation for families, couples or individuals.
The cottage is in an idilic setting on the Helmsdale strath, close to the village of Helmsdale and the renowned north coast 500 (NC500) tourist route.
It’s a fairly remote but close knit community in the far north and pretty much everyone is friendly. There’s plenty to see and do in the area, beach walks, gold panning, fishing, shooting, mountain and trail walks and a lot of wildlife around too
  • This is a beautiful getaway if you want to be in a stunning place away from everything. We went to write and needed a space with no distractions as well as a nice break for our dog. We only just adopted her after fostering for 5 months and the River Helmsdale was a brilliant place to let her off lead for the first time. She is normally reactive on the lead but we did meet one or two dogs that she was extremely friendly with. We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to test this with her and it made our stay very relaxing to have a relaxed dog. Nearby we visited Brora beach a few times and took advantage of the Co-Op because the Spar in Helmsdale is very expensive and limited on options. The garden was nothing special, more of a hill in the back with short stone walls so do not come here relying on having a garden but there are brilliant places to walk. We stayed warm with the heaters but it does make the house stuffy and dry so I recommend taking some hot water bottles so you do not need to rely on the heating too much :)

    Leanne2019-11-02T00:00:00Z
  • A very cosy crofters cottage with everything you will need. The kitchen is small but well appointed and has everything needed to cook meals etc. The bed in the master bedroom is super comfy! The TV does not access terrestrial TV but does have a DVD player and an excellent selection of DVDs. If you are taking a dog, there is no secure garden/area therefore you would need to keep them on a lead if they don't recall. Overall a very comfortable stay in a lovely area and we would stay again.

  • We absolutely loved staying at Susan's place, couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our five days explore the surrounding area. Would highly recommend Susan's place to anyone and we will most definitely be staying here again if we find ourself back in the area. Thank you for everything Susan!!

  • This is a lovely, cosy cottage with amazing views and a little enclosed garden. The cottage had everything we needed to be warm and comfortable. The shower was hot, the bed comfortable and the wifi connection was excellent. The walks round the cottage are also lovely and are on a quiet road which was great for our dog. Lastly, thanks for the milk, chocolates and shortbread...a very thoughtful touch which we enjoyed with a coffee when we first arrived. We will definately recommend the cottage to our friends and family.

  • A room inside a little house with a little dated decor but the kindness and hospitality of the landlady make everything pass in the background. Only the kitchen we found a little "greasy" but nevertheless we arranged for the better and better. I recommend it for a one-night stopover because there is nothing really in the country

  • A really special place. Large rooms, a pretty garden and a wonderful location.

    Akiko2019-07-27T00:00:00Z
  • We almost never write reviews but we'll make an exception here. We had no complaints at all about the accommodation, and in spring and summer the garden is a delightful bonus. It's only a very short stroll to the shops, pubs, café, restaurant and the small supermarket. Staying on a railway station is great fun - we did this once before elsewhere in Scotland. The trains are quiet and the first one isn't until 8am anyway. You can barely hear them even when sitting in the lounge room which is close to them. We are retired Australians who have travelled widely and have been travelling around Scotland for 9 months, so we have seen many types of accommodation. This is a great community initiative to preserve and use a delightful old building.

  • We had A lovely stay at the station. Super information prior to our arrival. 8 seniors can be comfortable there. Fine walks in the village and in the hills. Nice dining and living rooms. Highly recommended by us all.  Kind regards Jens and 7 more from Denmark

    Jens Moller2017-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • It's a very good experience : children waited for train. There isn't train in the night than, it's perfect. When we were there, we went until Chanonry point to watch Dolphin : we were on the beach !

    Pascal2017-08-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is a quirky little self-catering house. You are literally part of the station, with trains and people coming and going (not many though!!). It's like being part of the Railway Children!! The accommodation is well thought out, and we'll maintained, as is the little private garden. A great find in an interesting part of Scotland.

    Julie2017-07-22T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a wonderful gem! We stayed for two nights and loved the comfy atmosphere of the house. It has plenty of space and it's fun watching the trains go by. People in the village are super friendly - it was fun to walk down to one of the two pubs in town for a drink. There isn't much to do in the town itself but this house is nevertheless a perfect place for a quiet getaway. There is a small grocery store in town so you can also buy your food there! I would definitely recommend!

On top of that, a roaring fire, lovely rooms, lots of suggestions for walks and a bottle of wine too. Was perfect for us.

  • Bayview was a beautiful location for our summer holiday this year. The views are stunning and perfect peace and quiet. The kids loved playing badminton and french boules in the garden and the adults admired the views. The house was beautifully decorated, cosy and clean. The DVD collection and bottle of wine were nice touches. We added a new game and some classic DVDs to the drawer for future guests to enjoy! Thank you very much for your hospitality. We would definitely recommend Bayview to others.

Comfortable open plan lounge and dining room. Modern kitchen. Downstairs bathroom with large shower. 3 good sized warm and cozy bedrooms. Lovely views from the front of the house to the North Sea with seating area in the garden to take in the view.
The house is within easy walking distance of the village. There are two restaurants within the village a chip shop as well as two Hotels. There are a few shops in the village - the local Spa shop will have all the groceries you would need. There is a fishing tackle shop with everything the Fisher man/woman would need, there also is a good selection of Gins! There is a lovely gift and card shop in the village too along with a few others small shops. The local harbour has lobster and crab fishing boats along with fishing for mackerel- you can see the local fisherman land their catch and you may even get a fresh catch from them. The train station is about a 10-15 minute walk from the house and the local bus stop is a 6 minute walk away. I do hope you enjoy Helmsdale as much as I enjoyed living and growing up there.

  • Birch Cottage was one of the loviest places I have stayed. Everything was perfect and very clean. You couldn’t have asked for anything more in a stay. The host was super quick in answering and supplied lots of great information about the area. La Mirage restaurant, down on the corner was a great place to eat and the little cafe just down the street on the same side delightful. It’s location is central to everything and the local people are so friendly. I would definitely recommend Birch Cottage as a great stay on your list in Helmsdale.

  • We had a wonderful stay in Helmsdale. The local pipe band was marching up and down Dunrobin St at the moment of our arrival and the whole village was out to watch - a fitting welcome. The property itself is spacious and well-appointed, not fancy but very comfortable. It is a fantastic base for exploring the often-overlooked east coast of Sutherland/Caithness and Susan's tips were well-written and very handy. Helmsdale itself is a charmer - reminded me of the village of Furness in the film Local Hero in its seclusion, quirkiness and sense of community. Would definitely recommend this place!! Susan was a great host, very considerate and prompt with communicating.

    Julian2018-07-18T00:00:00Z
  • A very nice cottage. It was clean and comfortable. There is a lot of space. The garden is very beautiful and has sun almost all the time. Somehow, however, we did not manage to get the heating going - so it was pretty cold at night.

  • Quiet, convenient, beautiful location

  • Lovely little place to stop on the NC500 route with an open fire, full kitchen facilities and large bedroom with en-suite. There is also a nice coastal walk in the area which provided some interesting animals and sight when up at the top Would definitely recommend and would stay again. Thank you

The Hoose is a fully re-furbished old fisher man's cottage situated on the harbour side in the famous Highland salmon fishing village of Helmsdale. It is accessible by bus and train from Inverness which is where the nearest airport is. The Hoose is a place where you can completely relax and enjoy the views of the harbour and spend time watching the fisher men bringing in their catches of lobsters and crabs. The Hoose is a great place for couples and also for families (with kids).
The location is wonderful for being on the harbours edge
We love being on the harbour watching the boats, walking along the sea front and wondering up to the village for local shopping.
  • We had a fabulous stay at The Hoose; everything from the location to the standard of the accommodation surpassed expectations. A great family kitchen and good sized bedroom. The village of Helmsdale was limited in amenities but we had anticipated it would be. We had a relaxing stay and cosy nights by the coal fire.

    Sarah2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • What a wonderful home The Hoose is! We had a superb time and absolutely loved staying there. The views from the front of the house over the harbour and out to sea are lovely, the layout of the house is great and the garden and seating space at the back are private and quiet - our dogs enjoyed running about and knowing the garden was enclosed made sure we were not worried about them wandering off. In particular we loved the kitchen-dining room, not only was it a perfect space for us all to relax in but the kitchen is so well equipped. We will definitely be back!

    Alexandra2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Fabulous location, Bannockburn Pub and Spar shop both excellent. Cottage was very clean, cosy and comfortable. Location was perfect for our needs we were on route to Castle of Mey. Weather was fantastic so were able sit outside in the sun looking at the harbour. Garden was an unexpected bonus very pretty and secure, although we didn’t stay long enough to use it! We will recommend the cottage and would definitely return.

    S2019-05-20T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful house, beautiful location. Can't recommend it enough :) The little beach at Berridale and steps at Whaligoe are two good day trips but sitting outside the house in the sun watching the boats go in and out is pretty good too!!

    Caroline2018-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This a beautiful house overlooking the harbour. It’s ideal for exploring the highlands with good access to John O’Groats/Dunnet Head to the North or Dunrobin Castle/Falls of Shin to the South. Or you can just chill out in Helmsdale and watch the boats come in or go for a walk. There is lots of space in the house to relax. There’s a great kitchen/living area so that you can spend some quality family time together. It’s one of our top 2 Airbnb places that we have stayed at so far.

    Stephen2018-07-12T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely wonderful place to stay, very clean and quiet with everything a family needs for a holiday. The Cottage is warm, cosy and out of the way with some stunning views and walks locally. John O'Groats is also only 40 mins drive away and well worth a visit along with the Duncansby Head lighthouse.

Valhalla is a family owned and super comfortable 4 bedroom self catering holiday home in the lovely highland village of Helmsdale in Sutherland, Scotland. As a family we have holidayed in this area forever and so know it well. The house is perfectly suited up to 9 guests looking for that change of pace with beautiful scenery eg coastal and highland walking routes, fishing, golfing, exploring remote beaches and highland hills. It is located close to the village pubs, shops and restaurants.
The house was the former village police station and has been renovated, modernised and upgraded over recent years. It is now a comfortable and well equipped self-catering holiday house to 21st century standards. The house is located in Sutherland Street, just one minute from the centre of the village and all its amenities.
Helmsdale is a quiet village in a beautiful Highland location. If there is such a thing as a slow time dimension then this is it - its a great place to disconnect from modern life and revive your spirit. However if you wish to be active there is plenty to do in the surrounding environs. We are very happy to offer loads of recommendations of where to go and where to eat too.
  • Cosy, well-equipped and spacious. Perfect spot to go around Scotland's east coast.

  • If you are looking to stay in Helmsdale then I can't recommend this home enough. We stayed for a weekend and felt right at home. There is lots of space in this bright and comfortable home (which can sleep up to 8 people) for us all to move around in and plenty of storage for clothes, bags etc. The house was spotlessly clean and smelt fresh. The very large downstairs bedroom is easily accessible (which was ideal for my elderly grandfather) as it has no steps into it and a toilet room directly next door. The living room was great to sit in in the evenings (with a great supply of DVDs and board games) and I can imagine in the winter it would be a joy to sit infront of the real log burning fire. The heating system was excellent and the house was very cosy. The kitchen is very spacious and well equiped. We enjoyed having breakfast there overlooking the beautiful garden and surrounding hills. The bedrooms upstairs were very comfortable and we slept so well. There are plenty of soft towels provided and a hairdryer. Lots of mirrors around the home which was handy when getting ready. The owner was excellent in responding to any questions I had. The house itself is situated just off the main street in Helmsdale. We enjoyed gentle walks around the village in the mornings along the harbour to return home for breakfast. There is plenty of parking outside of the house. Helmsdale is great for day trips up to Wick or down the coast to Brora or Dornoch, or the house is so nice it might be nice to have a lazy day enjoying the rooms or the garden! Thank you for a great weekend - we hope to return.

  • Perfekt place to stay for some days in a beautiful landscape. Peaceful, comfortable and nice to stay. Maybe coming again without sculptures - only doing some trips around the little town.

    Nicola2017-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Susan's house is beautiful, so much so, that I felt compelled to share my awe with her, texting within minutes of our arrival! It's location is fantastic. It sits on the main road of the village but is deceptively private. We had planned on using it merely as a base and sightseeing but we were secretly delighted that on our second day, the weather was inclement and had a fabulously lazy pyjama day by the fire. Everything we needed was provided and there are three or four great eateries literally on the doorstep. There is also so much to do and see that we wouldn't possibly do it all in the time we were there, all the more reason to come back.! Everyone we met was genuinely friendly and not just pandering to tourists. Birch Cottage was a hit with us and we will definitely be back!
