Places to stay in Skerray
Tubeg and Clashbuie make up the crofting township which lies above the harbour at Skerray. Shed No.7 is a newly built studio cabin with twin beds, en suite shower room, cooking facilities and a sitting area and balcony. The cabin is well insulated and cosy so perfect for all year round stays. It has superfast Broadband. There are outstanding views across to Island Niamh (pron. Neave) and beyond to the Orkney Islands. Our minimum stay is 2 nights but we know you will want to stay longer.
Shed No.7 is in a unique rural area of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland. Situated right above the shore on the north coast looking out over the Orkney islands to the east, there are views of the north sea all around. Nearby within walking distance is Skerray harbour where local people have boats for lobster and crab fishing and also for recreation. Skerray has a Post office and craft shop; a polytunnel with plants and home made produce; and a hotel with food and bar (Borgie hotel). Nearby villages of Tongue and Bettyhill also have hotels, food shops, post offices, laundrette and cafes. Beaches are all around with Torrisdale beach running from Skerray to Bettyhill. Farr bay beach is in Bettyhill and Coldbackie beach on the way to Tongue.
  • Irene's space is simply amazing. The view is something that I could easily spend the rest of my life waking up to, and the cabin is very well equipped and thoughtfully laid out. Irene is a warm and welcoming host, we'd recommend staying here without any hesitation!

  • We had a lovely stay at Irene’s place exactly as described , you won’t be disappointed ! Many thanks for your hospitality.

  • We absolutely loved our stay at Irene and Brian's cottage. The cottage offers sensational views and was very comfortable. The hospitality offered by Irene and Brian was a special touch. They provided some delicious bits of food and as we were there for New Year's Eve, they invited us to join them and their neighbours for a bonfire and fireworks, as well as providing a late check out to ease into the new year. We spent two nights here as we made our way around the coast and would have loved to stay longer! Highly recommended!

  • Great spot overlooking the sea. Everything we needed was on hand. Brian was also kind enough to help us with a tow when got our van into a bit of bother.

  • We had a fantastic stay at Irenes little hut. We could not think of any better Airbnb because every detail was perfect. Irene and her husband were absolutely friendly and welcoming and we had a very nice chat with them. The view was stunning and there were a lot of information for nice walks and recommendations for restaurants provided. We really hope we can stay at this place again.

  • Such a gem of a place, very well thought through and also very warm despite chilly October outside. This is also a great base for exploring the far North and all the beaches nearby. The views from the windows are one of the best I’ve had in AirBnb.

    Alexander2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • A great place to stay for a short break; thoroughly recommended. Sea views, great sunrises, and very quiet. Microwave, 2 ring hob and small fridge, so fine for basic cooking. Good chat with the owners.

    Andy2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • Everything is just as in the pictures - even better! Irene and Brian were attentive and cheerful hosts and made our stay a great experience. There is nothing better than enjoying a hot tea and scones with a view of the North sea.

Armadale House is a Victorian Mansion built in 1854 on the site of a modest farmhouse. Almost fully restored to its former glory, a lot of work has been done to make the house a home again and to welcome guests.
Armadale House is conveniently situated along popular driving and cycle routes. Making Armadale an ideal place to stop and relax for a few days or to use as a base while exploring the Northern Highlands. I've always felt that by the time travelers arrive at the North Coast they've been moved by Scotland's beauty and a chance to reflect and recharge is welcome. Once settled, guests have the opportunity to organize photos, write postcards and begin to look ahead to their remaining journey. With a wealth of knowledge about local attractions I am more than happy to help you plan your stay.
Armadale on the North Coast of Scotland is one of three places called Armadale in Scotland. There is also an Armadale on the Isle of Skye, and another Armadale in West Lothian. Armadale at the North Coast is home to just about 50 people, so don’t expect to find shops and cafes in this little settlement (the closest shops are in Bettyhill or Melvich). Armadale itself might not be the most exciting place, but it makes up for this by offering visitors a beautiful sandy beach that is split into three different section by two small streams running through it (easy to cross). Most of the times, visitors will find that they are the only people enjoying the beach, especially if you go there in the mornings.
  • Don't miss out on this opportunity. You'll get a huge room, gorgeous location and a warm welcome by your host Detta. And I'm not just saying that because she's a fellow Dutchie.

    Christine2019-11-14T00:00:00Z
  • This is a great place to stay and I cant recommend it highly enough. Cycle friendly too.

    Rob2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • Detta is a great host. She goes far and beyond to make you comfortable and feel at home. This is an old stone house that looks to be straight out of a mystery book, full of its own charm.

    Lin2019-09-05T00:00:00Z
  • This is such an amazing place to stay. Detta hospitality is amazing. she is very attentive and the breakfast in the morning was very nice as well. Would recommence anyone who is traveling in the are to stay there.

The Elfie Logpod is a band new luxury eco-pod with double bed, ensuite shower and toilet and kitchenette (with fridge, microwave, hotplate and sink) plus seating area with sofa and TV. Very comfortable and warm glamping with power shower and underfloor heating. Stunning views of the sea and islands from the porch and large decking area from the parking space.
  • Pictures do not do this place justice, very cosy and warm and clean. Margaret was a fabulous host

    Lotte2020-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • My partner and I stayed at this pod while travelling the North Coast 500. Cannot recommend it enough, Margaret has made it extremely cosy and charming. Immaculately clean and the balcony offers an amazing view.

    Tom2020-03-12T00:00:00Z
  • This was an absolute gem to find, fallen in love with this location not only for the heated flooring and more space than we thought (I am 6ft 3 and me and my partner found it easy to live there) but the view from the front balcony is absolutly breathtaking we were able to sit there for 2 hours and just watch the waves and birds. Very sad to leave but definitely will be coming back! Made to feel right at home it was the best place we stayed by far in our trip.

    Nicholas2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Great view and nice little place!

    Alex2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • A really wonderful, cosy stay in the cutest cabin. Margaret was a great communicator and the logpod itself was thoughtfully decorated and had lots of nice homely touches (we loved the hot water bottle, candles and fresh farm eggs) . Thank you!

    Eilidh2020-02-25T00:00:00Z
  • Very welcoming host. Gave a tour on how everything works (shower, cooker etc). Has heated floors and a heater so was very warm. Left us fresh eggs from her chickens, which were amazing! Very comfy bed that is perfect for two with a TV (freeview). Shower was OK but went cold after a while so if there is two of you make them relatively quick (5 mins each) so you both get hot water. Absolutely stunning view of the ocean from front porch, perfect for a morning cuppa! 100% coming back to this lovely little scenic house. Recommend very highly.

    Taran2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Margaret’s place is absolutely stunning. A really classy pod, with everything you could possibly need and a totally glorious view. And to top it all off she gave us the most deliciously fresh eggs from her hens for our breakfast - what a treat. We will certainly be back, and highly recommend to everyone!

    George2020-02-13T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely place perfect for our trip with beautiful views! Nice and cosy even during a heavy storm! Lovely friendly lady with lots of helpful tips and thank you for the amazing eggs. Would definitely come back xx

  • I spent a week with my dog at The Shepherd’s Hut in early March. We were blessed with the most fantastic weather and the area is outstandingly beautiful. The hut was incredibly clean and has all you need and the quality bed linen and towels are hugely appreciated. There is a really great shower too. Emily and Barry excellent hosts, incredibly helpful and friendly. The views are sensational and it felt like a real privilege to be there. We were very cosy in the hut as there is an electric heater and a woodburner that has a stovetop but you have to keep feeding it. Also bring pajamas if you’re planning a longer stay as the loo is in the breezy porch outside the hut! Can’t recommend enough

    Alex2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic little place to stay, especially if doing the NC500. Would highly recommend and would definitely come back here!

    Hayley2020-02-26T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay at the shepherds hut, such thoughtful touches and excellent communication with Emily. It was so cosy, it was absolutely freezing when we arrived but with the little heater, the fire and blankets kept us cosy! We only stayed for one night, the only downfall was the lack of time we had to make the most of the walks and area.

    Rebecca2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Emily’s place was beautiful - a really unique place to stay whilst travelling along the coast. It was super clean and had everything you could need!

    Jenny2020-01-25T00:00:00Z
  • A cosy, clean and well equipped retreat in a lovely location.

    Andrew2020-01-18T00:00:00Z

We welcome you to our home, a small traditional croft house in Skerray just off the North Coast 500 route. We live a simple life, as ecologically sound as we can and are happy to share a bit of our way of life with you. Our croft is planted with a variety of trees and has an area of wild flowers at the top. You are very welcome to have a walk around. For the courageous willing to make it to the top of the small hill behind the croft, this is a great spot to watch the sunset.
The guest bedroom is upstairs and has a double bed (down pillows and duvet) as well as a futon. The futon means you can relax there, although you are welcome to use the downstairs living room too, which has a wood stove for cold evenings. There is a small electric heater that you're welcome to use too. The bathroom has a bathtub but no shower. Feel free to have a long soak after a day travelling and/or exploring. The hot water is heated by a Rayburn which we fuel with wood. This also heats the house. You are welcome to use the kitchen, which has a large dining table, fridge, kettle and Rayburn cooker. Help yourself to tea and coffee, and should you wish to cook an evening meal, we will show you how to use the Rayburn cooker.
Our house is next to the Post Office in the middle of Skerray. A 10 minute walk takes you to Torrisdale, an amazing sandy beach. In the other direction is a small harbour with lovely views of the islands beyond. There are plenty of other short walks in the area without needing the car, ask us about them! A few miles down the road is the recently re-developed Borgie Lodge Hotel where you can have excellent lunches and evening meals. This is the closest place to eat in the evenings. Alternatives are choices of hotels at Bettyhill and Tongue. For provisions, there are small shops and petrol stations in Tongue and Bettyhill.
  • Sylvain: We arrived at Aurore at random (choice to sleep two nights in the North of Scotland). We discovered an extraordinary person and an equally great environment (house and surroundings). Thank you Aurore, for making us live unforgettable moments in the simplicity and in this house unplanned, where we feel that the values of respect for the environment are paramount. We did not meet Ale, but do not doubt that the discussions would have been so warm. To summarize this two-night stay: Rejuvenating, captivating, exotic ... We would have resumed a third night, but we had to continue our journey in Scottish land. I still discovered a beautiful place for my sixth stay in the land of Alba. Simply: THANK YOU !!! Patricia: Entering Aurore is to accept not wanting to leave ... It is to be enveloped by the sweetness of his smile and the warmth of his Redburn, a wood stove that gives off an extremely welcoming atmosphere ( just like his owner). We spent in this small house lost in the middle of the Scottish lands a stay out of time, delicious and unforgettable. Aurore is an extraordinary person, incredibly authentic and whose choices of life and values have left us admiring. The moments shared with her are not about to fade from our memories and our only regret is not to have booked for two weeks rather than two nights ... We would then have had plenty of time to fully enjoy our host, of Oscar (Wilde, the cat) and their beautiful environment. We are therefore eager to visit them again (and to meet Al, at the same time). Thank you Aurore!

    Sylvain2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Al & Aurora made us feel very welcome in their home. Their kitchen is so cosy, we enjoyed our breakfasts and chats. The bedroom has a lovely comfy bed and view across the hills. I would definitely recommend their Croft, it also has a cute thatched Post office next door. It was interested to see a different way of life and they are a lovely couple.

    June2019-09-19T00:00:00Z
  • Al and Aurore are wonderful hosts, very helpful and eager to spend some time for their guests ... or even a lot of time. The room is very comfortable, the bed very comfortable. There is a very good breakfast with home-baked, excellent bread and jam. In the large, rustic kitchen with wood-fired stove, it is very cozy. If you like a rustic, rural, nature-loving style, here is the absolute best address!

    Jutta2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Wow! This is a magical place. The Crofthouse is incredibly warm and so comfortable - it’s located in a very quiet township in such a beautiful part of the NW Coast - the setting is supreme and the WiFi is strong. Aurore & Al were the MOST generous hosts I’ve ever met, they welcomed us into their home in a relaxed way, totally unobtrusive but accommodating. This was an experience through and through - and breakfast was delicious, everything here is homemade with love.

    Ashley2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • The two were amazingly nice, the house was beautiful and very clean. We felt very comfortable and at home. They also gave us insider tips on beautiful hiking trails and especially beaches. This accommodation can definitely be recommended.

    Johannes2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Al and Aurora where great hosts, they couldn’t have been more welcoming. Their house is so homely and the room is a lovely clean space. We also loved Oscar the cat and the lovely home baked bread at breakfast was delicious. Would definitely recommend this stay for a true airbnb experience.

    Annie2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Al and Aurore have been wonderful hosts, very easy going and helpful. The place is gorgeous, very clean and fuss free. The area is fantastic for walks and views but is also great for some quiet time if you need a break from touristy holiday or hectic work schedule. Also great if you want to experience a simpler life with ethical practices and get to know more about croft life. I’d go back in a heartbeat! Really really lovely stay. Worth staying for a few days!

    April2019-08-29T00:00:00Z
  • Al and Aurores home is lovely. From the great communication, to the warm welcome at the door. To booking a table at Borgie Lodge for a wonderful dinner and chat. Your home is warm and welcoming. The bed super comfy. Our room spacious. A great breakfast of cereal, coffee/tea/bread and jams etc. All in all a lovely stay. By the way - the wee post office next door has great little gifts.

A cosy, luxury little bothy on the rugged North coast, just off the NC500 route. The cabin sleeps 2 people and towels and linen are provided along with a warm, Highland welcome.
The cabin is placed behind our family home but views of the local islands and shoreline can be enjoyed from your picnic table. The space is open plan with a kitchen and dining area and comfortable living area with a sofa bed. There is a small convector oven/grill with 2 cooking rings above.
Whether you are are travelling the NC500 or simply seeking the tranquility of the Scottish Highlands, Talmine is the perfect stop to explore the North coast. With beautiful golden sandy beaches and lots of opportunities for either loch or sea fishing, there's something for everyone. For keen hill climbers, Ben Loyal (Queen of Scottish Mountains) or Ben Hope (the most Northerly Munro) are popular with many other spectacular hills within easy reach. The local hotel is a 5 minute drive away, 2 other hotels are just a 10 minute drive away in the next village of Tongue. The local shop is a 5 minute drive away.
  • The cabin at the crossroads is an absolute treat!!! We were sad that we only stayed for one night in the end. The cabin has everything you need for a comfy and relaxed get away! Shirley was super kind to us and very welcoming. The area is just beautiful and you must go to see skinnet beach, it is just stunning!!!! The cabin is a gem!

  • February weather & in the teeth of Storm Dennis, but still an amazing place, caravan very cosy despite weather, views amazing, Donald & Audrey couldn’t have been more helpful. Great place to escape to.

  • Amazing location, very quiet and right next to the beach. Great views. Caravan is simple, but clean and has everyhting that you need. Genuinely dog-friendly accomodation.

    Claire2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • The caravan is grand - all systems work well enough and it's comfy and well laid out. What really makes this a wonderful place to stay is the surroundings - you can ford the river or cross by a bridge a few hundred yards upstream and walk for miles into an amazing coastal landscape rich in wildlife - we saw otters, osprey and hosts of other creatures. A great tonic if you have been urban for a while.

  • What a fantastic place the Byre is , peaceful setting , fantastic views , skinnet beach was just amazing and right on the doorstep , everything was perfect , cant wait to go back .

    Rachel2020-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • If you’re looking for a quiet get away set in one of the most beautiful locations then The Byre is perfect. As it was the Christmas season we didn’t get to explore the restaurants around - but we were able to use the small but well equipped kitchen in the accommodation to concoct all our meals- including our Christmas lunch. There was plenty of tea and coffee and hot chocolate provided, as well as plenty of kindling, wood and other things needed to get a fire going for the evening times. The space has been very well thought out- the bathroom in particular was much more generous in size than I was expecting and the shower was superb. There are plenty of gorgeous walks to try out around the immediate area- a few of which you can do in foot from the door of The Byre. All in all : we had a wonderful time here and hope to return again.

    Genevieve2019-12-28T00:00:00Z
  • The instructions to find the Byre were great and we found it no bother despite getting dark by the time we arrived. The check-in via the key locker was also very easy. The stove was laid, the place was cosy and there was some optional purchase cured meats sitting waiting in the fridge for us (like using a mini-bar) - fennel salami was delicious :) Emily was a great host and the Byre was the perfect base for exploring the North coast so we had a great weekend!

The location is very quiet and I think, if you are lucky, you can spot the Northern lights from the living room (but of course it was raining when we were there). I can highly recommend it.

  • Bethany’s place is clean, comfortable and has plenty of room. Great to have such a roomy shower space. Betty Hill was a real surprise - such a pretty place - and Bethany’s place is well situated on top of the hill with a view of a beach out the back windows. Parking is convenient, it is a short walk down the hill to a lovely beach, and across the road is an attractive looking hotel with a panoramic view from what looks like the restaurant and bar. Strongly recommend staying at Bethany’s place if you get the opportunity.

    Greg2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • We totally enjoyed our stay at Bethany's. It is as described 'home away from home'. Bethany greeted us warmly and was available if needed. We had a fab stay for two nights. We had the whole bungalow to ourselves. There was a local pub which was very friendly and served super food. We entertained ourselves at the local swimming pool / spa. Definitely highly recommend and if in the area will book again! Thank you Bethany

Incredibly cosy flat with beautiful touches, and the location was incredible. We’ll be back! Highly recommend a visit here to anyone travelling around Scotland.

  • The Wee House is a great wee find overlooking the North coast of Scotland. We were warmly welcomed by Jenny and Struie. The Wee Hoosie is very clean, cosy and comfortable. Jenny's hosting was outstanding, she called us before our arrival with precise directions. Our visit was a last minute decision, the result being we forgot some things for our dog. Jenny to the rescue with an extra dog bowl, towels and blankets. These small gestures made an excellent stay. Will definetly return, Rosan, Tim and Hartley.

When on either Ben Hope or Ben Loyal there is a strong possibility of sighting an eagle or two. If you are in interested in history there is plenty to absorb you including a broch, a battlefield and castle. In Bettyhill there is a museum which covers crofting and The clearances of the land in Sutherland in 19 th Century - to make way for sheep farming.
  • Stunning views that never get old. Even more beautiful than the photos, hoping one day we will return. The kindest hosts who will do anything to ensure your stay is the best it can be. Clean, modern and a beautiful little space. Thank you Pam & David!

    Meg2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Pam & David were wonderful hosts, from the outset communication was prompt and thoughtful in regards to organising supplies for us. The accommodation was extremely comfortable, and the views unsurpassed. There is also a wonderful little pub called The Craggen within close walking distance, as well as lovely beaches. David has extensive knowledge of the local area, and Pam’s hospitality was wonderful.

  • We had a fantastic time here, the view from the property is stunning, and the apartment is very spacious! When we arrived it was spotlessly clean, and Pam & David had provided a few extra bits to make our arrival and stay easier, including them having excellent local advice of where to go.

    Ryan2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • When I first read the amazing reviews for Pam & David’s place I was a bit sceptical. I thought that people were just being nice; I was wrong! This place was amazing! Very clear, stylish with many thoughtful touches and beautiful views! Pam and David were amazing hosts. The weather was not great when my wife and I visited but that was not a problem at all; we were delighted to sit on the sofas with our books and a glass of wine and admire the view. I highly recommend Pam & David’s place and I'll definitely try to visit again.

    Antonis2019-08-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing time at Pam and David's home. The apartment is very beautiful, clean and has an amazing view. Sadly we had only three nights to stay there, we would have loved to stay a couple of days longer. Pam and David are perfect hosts, there's nothing they could do better.

Tigh Ard B &B - En Suite, Wi-Fi and TV Situated on the Melness side of the beautiful Kyle of Tongue, from your room and dining area you will have a superb view of the Queen of Scottish Mountains, Ben Loyal as well as Ben Hope with hints of the mountains on the west coast. On arrival you will be welcomed to a courtesy tray with speciality teas and sweet treats. The room is also equipped with hair dryer and electric blankets - just in case!
Your ground floor en suite bedroom looks out across the Kyle of Tongue with a stunning panoramic view of Ben Loyal, Ben Hope, Coldbackie beach and out towards the Rabbit Islands. Your bedroom is equipped with a kingside bed (with topper) and electric blankets, (for chilly nights) feather pillows (or not) and 100% cotton bed linen. It is also equipped with TV, WiFi, hair dryer. An ironing board and iron is also available on request. Melness is a unique area. Just turn off the NC500 route to enjoy the most wonderful white sandy beaches the largest of which is in front of our house. The seals, which can be heard as well as seen. Down by the causeway you could be lucky enough to see wild Otters, Eagles Sea Eagles, Curlews, Oyster catchers, Herons, Buzzards and other birds of prey. (Don't forget the binoculars!) There are many walks to be enjoyed - long - and 'not too long', Hill walking on Ben Loyal or Ben Hope, our local Munro. The views from the top are magnificent - to the west coast and Caithness in the east. If water is more your medium, then launch your canoe and explore around the Rabbit Islands, only a few hundred yards off shore with their isolated beaches - or if more adventurous there is the wonderful coastline around Whiten Head - and some of the highest cliffs in the UK. Many people bring their windsurf boards and enjoy the length and magnificent views of the Kyle of Tongue. There is much local history; Brochs of the Iron Age to battle sites of the Clans and the Lochen where Bonnie Prince Charlie's gold is said to have been buried. No amount of metal detecting has brought it to the surface! We have information on walking in the area to local history. There is a museum in Bettyhill, to the east of us, devoted to the Clearances . We shall be happy to advise you on the area/walks in and around Melness and as David is a keen photographer he is able to point you in the direction of the best vantage points as well as give you the opportunity to purchase some of his favourite views - in case the weather is not behaving during your visit! We look forward to meeting you and will do all we can to ensure you enjoy your stay in this beautiful part of the world.
  • Pam and David were excellent host, very nice, funny and caring people. The room, as the whole house, is beautiful (as you can see from the pictures), very clean and with a wonderful view. It is also spacious, and you can find everything you could need. Same for adjacent bathroom, that is like an en-suite, because there is another door that separate your area from the rest of the house. Pam cooked an excellent breakfast for us and help us to book our dinner at a nearby restaurant (very good); David give us useful advices about the area. Their dog, Coco, is lovely and very quite, he will be kept away from you if you prefer, but we loved to pet him a little! The Kyle of Tongue is a beautiful and peaceful area, that worth more then a quick stop to take some pictures. Staying with Pam and David was definitely a plus for us!

    Matilde2019-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • It was a pleasure to stay at Pam and David's home. Everything was perfect. The location, the cosy room, the royal breakfast with a breathtaking view. We enjoyed talking with Pam and David who was very helpful to plan a wonderful daytrip round the lochs. We definitively recommand this adress.

  • Truly, "A room with a view". The view from the bedroom and breakfast area is stunning and ever changing. It really was lovely and beyond our expectations. Pam and David were fantastic hosts, and went out of their way to provide us with maps and information about local places to walk. We really appreciated the effort they went to. The cooked breakfast was great. Our room and the bathroom and shower were all quite spacious and stylish. It was a real pleasure to stay here, and hope to return one day.

    Chris2019-09-15T00:00:00Z

    Martin2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • This place definitely lives up to all the hype and the reviews! Pam and David are the most lovely and personable hosts and we had a great time chatting to them and their awesome dog, Coco. They gave us really good tips for our day in tongue, and had a hiking book for us to use. They also had a wealth of local knowledge and knew all the best places to eat and gave us heaps of tips for our drive when we were leaving. The bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was spotless with a great shower. There was heaps of little touches that they added to the room which made it extra special. All of this and then the amazing breakfast and absolutely spectacular views from the bedroom and living room. We had high expectations coming here and they definitely exceeded all of them! I would 100% recommend to stay here it is the best Airbnb we have ever stayed at in our years of travelling.

  • Frances' cottage is a real delight - picture perfect on the outside, very comfortable on the inside, and great location in the village of Tongue. She's a very welcoming host and has clearly thought of everything to make our holiday go smoothly.

    Chris2019-05-31T00:00:00Z
  • This is my second trip to Tongue and France's place made it perfect. It's an adorable croft right on the edge of town, which is perfect. You have amazing views, you can enjoy peace and quiet, and you're still near everything. Really, the general store was a one-minute walk, if that, and the pub at Tongue Hotel four minutes. This would be a great place to stay at for everything in Tongue and also around it, from Durness to Thurso. Tongue itself is incredibly beautiful, and this croft just makes it better. Frances's gave us a very warm welcoming, and we really enjoyed her friendly cat (and also the whisky, eggs, and shortbread cookies she left as a welcome gift). Couldn't ask for a better experience.

Fir Chlis is my home. From 2003 to 2012, I ran the house as a spiritual retreat for people looking for a place of withdrawal and refreshment. Sadly a catalogue of health problems over the following 3 years meant I was unable to continue to offer Fir Chlis as a retreat house offering accommodation with full board, so I decided to list it on Airb&b and simply offer bread and breakfast. Over the past two years many guests have spoken of the serenity of the house and how they’ve experienced a sense of deep peace during their stay. The house still has a chapel and a service of Holy Communion is held at noon on the first Friday of each month to which all guests are invited should they wish to attend. Fir Chlis is situated in an area of outstanding beauty and both twin and double rooms have uninterrupted views of Ben Loyal - "The Queen of Scottish mountains".
This is a remote yet very friendly and caring community. There are a few local shops in the village including a post office, bank, garage, cafe and a small food store. Tongue also has two hotels where guests can enjoy food and drink.

We are surrounded by a stunningly beautiful landscape, composed of Mountains and the Sea. Comfy beds, cosy rooms and an open fire to breakfast by, ensure a relaxed stay. Not to forget, a 2 min walk will take you to our local restaurants and pubs.
We offer four en-suite guest rooms with either a double bed or twin beds, please inquire for family and pet-friendly accommodation. The price is for 2 adults per room.
We live in a very remote area. It is ideal for walking, fishing, cycling and photography, bird/seal/otter/whale watching, or simply enjoying the views. People are friendly and help out in any kind of emergency. Roads are mostly single track and courtesy is keeping everyone happy. Sheep, lambs, deer and highland cattle roam free and use roads frequently, cyclists and walkers will be thankful for careful driving, too. The Post Office is a village hub with a little cafe, shop, deli as well as banking and postal services. Local hotels over bar and restaurant breakfast, lunch, and dinner with last orders between 8.30-9.00 pm. At the weekends and during the summer season there is a good chance for some live music. Tongue is a village with dramatic scenery and a perfect starting point for several Munro and hill walks. The Moine Flow Country peatlands are amazing, wide-open spaces bordered by mountains and the sea. The Kyle of Tongue and it's easy accessible beautiful beaches are ideal for spotting wildlife, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, snorkeling, cycling or just relaxing. And to finish off your day, why not try some Kyle of Tongue oysters, Loch Erribol Langoustines, local lobster, mussels, salmon or venison dinner options!
  • This is an unforgettable place. A unique setting with amazing views directly from the breakfast table.

  • My partner and I had a great stay here. We arrived after walking up Ben Hope and were welcomed by the lovely Silke. The room was pristine and had a number of thoughtful touches, including a booklet of information about the local area, perfect for visitors like us. Breakfast was amazing. Would definitely stay here again.

  • A quiet restful place to stay, and more than one night is a strong recommendation as there are walks and drives to do to experience this fascinating and historical area. Silke has loads of good suggestions as her local knowledge is excellent.

The house is spacious & light with wonderful views overlooking Neave island & the North Atlantic. It's a great year-round location for NC500, walking, outdoor sports & generally as a great place to get away from it all.
The things our friends & family value most about being here are the peace, the views, the space, the freedom, the privacy, the walks, the 'things' in house for a holiday (books, DVDs, games) & that it feels like a home.
The area is remote with the villages of Tongue & Bettyhill both 8 miles away. There is also a craft shop & post office only 2 minutes drive away. The peace & tranquility of the location combined with the views & comfort of the house are the aspects of Socair that people remark on most.
  • Lots and lots of space in the house and everything you could need. Lovely location with great views from the house. Lovely local beaches and some fantastic mountains nearby and close to Tongue and Bettyhill for local amenities. Weather is often better than you would expect and we had four days of wall to wall sunshine and blue skies before a few showers arrived

    Tony2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Unmatched views from the living room... very helpfull owner. We had a very relaxed week in a wonderful environment.

    Spinthe2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Spacious, cozy house, well equipped with everything you need! Sufficient seating and large dining table, everything was very clean! The house is very picturesque with a view of the sea, from time to time a sheep looks in at the window! ;) Beautiful surroundings with countless opportunities for walking and hiking, highly recommended!

    Sandra2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • Donna’s place had the best view! It looked unreal from the big window of the living room. The house was well equipped and we had a great stay! Tips for supplies: the closest Tesco is at Thurso. We did a big shopping there on the way back from John’ O Groats. The store at Bettyhill doesn’t offer much. The one in Tongue is a bit better. And check your fuel before doing the north coast route. Not many gas station working in the area. Call them before you go!

    Yomi2019-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • A fantastic house for a relaxing holiday with stunning views of the sea and islands.

    John2019-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • The location is great, the house very comfortable and big. We had a perfect holiday.

    Chloé2019-07-17T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent value, really well equipped, outstanding views and incredibly helpful hosts.

    Leo2019-06-15T00:00:00Z
  • We are a family with young children and enjoyed a wonderful stay at Skerray. The views from the cottage over the cliffs are breathtaking and I cannot describe the sense of peace one feels gazing out over the sea when it is still light at 1030pm. The location is stunning and you can walk along the hillside at the back of the cottage amongst the sheep. The children loved it. The cottage is spacious and very well equipped. All the essentials you tend to forget - tea towels and kitchen foil - are provided. It is a home and it has a homely feel. There are a number of beautiful sandy beaches close by if you don’t feel like a long car drive. There is plenty to do along the coast between Durness and beyond Bettyhill. We could easily have spent longer there and look forward to returning.

  • Can't fault this place - the accommodation was excellent, bigger than I had expected. King sized bed and sofabed and it didn't feel cramped at all. The bathroom facilities were great, heater to keep us cozy, microwave, fridge, and even a TV for the rainy nights! Nice decking area overlooking spectacular views of the coast. Would definitely recommend.

  • Joanna made us very welcome from the booking process to checking out. The house and the setting was beautiful. The house had everything we needed for three small children also. I will definitely stay again in the future and look forward to it. Thank you!

  • It's in a perfect place to visit all along the North Coast of Scotland with some great views along the river and down to the coast from the house. The description of the property is correct do not expect new kitchen and bathroom but its very comfortable and has everything you need.

    Wendy2019-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic location, very cosy and comfortable.

    Hellie2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time here. The house was spotlessly clean snd cosy yet had plenty of space for our family of 4. Bettyhill seems to be a good central location to explore the area. The views from the front of the house are incredible, probably even better the than pictures on the listing. We would love to return.

    Chris2019-08-08T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage has the most amazing view, and enables you to appreciate the wonderful surroundings and nature whatever the weather. There's plenty of space (we were only 2, but 4 would be comfortable too), and it was warm and cosy. It's a very good place to base yourselves while you explore the north of Scotland.

    Clare2019-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great house with the great views. Really well equipped, including high chair for 1.5 yrs old. The house very clean and comfortable. Joanna is very friendly and helpful.

    Michal2019-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • We really, really enjoyed our stay in this cosy house! Everyone in and around Bettyhill are so kind and the views and hikes are perfect. You walk right to the beach with a beautiful sand beach. We read a lot in the ‘reading’ room as we called it and even doing the dishes in this house is calming as you have a view of the river and mountains right from the sink.
