This is a rare opportunity to get close to Malaysian elephants, as it is the only sanctuary in the country. Just under an hour’s drive away in the small town of Lanchang, you can observe the elephants as they roam freely, watch documentaries and conservation talks, or catch the elephants as they enjoy their daily bath from their caretaker. The elephant sanctuary was established in 1989 within the Krau Wildlife Reserve, and is managed by the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

Described by The Star newspaper as ‘Bentong’s gem of a waterfall’, the Perting Waterfall (or Lata Hammers) is a 30-minute hike away. Gear up for a good sweat - the descent to the pool takes you through a makeshift bridge and a canopied forest trail, but the pathway is clearly marked with arrows The large pool that greets visitors is worth the effort, though do be careful of strong currents.
