People often think Cape Flattery is part of the Olympic National Park, but it’s not. It’s on the northwestern-most point of contiguous Unites States on Makah Tribe land. It’s about a 2 hr drive from Port Angeles, and well worth the drive to the North-western most point of continental United States. You’ll need a Makah Recreation Pass to utilize the parking lot. This viewpoint is a popular Washington state attraction given its rocky coastal landscape dotted with trees. There’s an easy, short hike from the parking lot to the coast overlooking Neah Bay. Watch sun-bathing puffins and waves crashing on the rocky coastline. Please note: Cape Flattery is now open! Please check the NPS website for the most accurate details before driving out.

This is one of the most popular beaches on the Washington coast for tide pools. Plan your visit at low tide and you’ll be rewarded with little holes in the sand filled with sea stars, urchins, anemones and more. Another popular attraction here is the Tree of Life. It’s a huge tree growing over an eroding river bed right on the beach. You can actually see the mass root system growing, making for an interesting photo and opportunity to explore.

Located close to Marymere Falls, the hike to Mount Storm King is one of our favorite due to the rewarding views of Lake Crescent and the Strait from the top. Fair warning though, it is not a hike for the faint of heart! This is a short but grueling hike. It is a steep, relentless climb up to Mount Storm King but rewards you with magnificent view of Lake Crescent once you make it to the top! Just before reaching the summit, the trail gets steeper. The trail is about 4-5 mile roundtrip with a 2100 ft elevation gain. It starts off deceptively easy enough, but the elevation gain comes on about 10 mins in. The last part of the hike is aided by ropes with steep cliffs on either sides, and can be very challenging. And definitely dangerous in bad weather. But if you make it to the end, you will be rewarded with the most spectacular view! It is a perfect hike if you are looking for a challenging hike in the area!
