High end at high elevations. Be prepared to check in at the guard gate. Lunch is very doable for more budget minded folks. Dinner will almost certainly require a reservation. If it's an option, we recommend the cowboy buffet for a great dinner experience!

City/town information

Walmart and Lowes are here as well as other shops. We like the New River Trail head right near downtown, The Galax Smokehouse, and Creek Bottom Brewing. Fun little shops to explore and other good eats. Get here via the parkway or via Hwy 58 off of I-77.

Good mountain town vibes! The general store may still be hosting Friday night cloggers and live music. Neat local shops and a few good eateries too. The Saturday morning market is liked by our neighbors!

Sightseeing

Okay, this is one of our favorite hikes. We would say it's a moderate 3 mile hike offering grand views of the surrounding mountains. Pack a picnic and eat about two miles in along the top ridge line. You're getting close after you cross the parkway and climb a set of wooden stairs over a fence into a pasture!

Right near downtown Galax, this trailhead access is great for a jaunt into nature! We like to follow our hike with a beer at Creek Bottom Brewery! You have to pay for parking, but you are supporting the park service!

Our mountain house faces directly south (hence the name -- Southview) and Pilot mountain is what you see! Nice little hike and visitors center. Hopefully the recent fire hasn't affected things too much. Hikes are easy to moderate and fine for walking dogs too.

Incredible! This is the largest state park in Virginia. It's a 1.5 hour drive from Southview. See wild horses and take in the views! Lots of hiking paths for short to all day hikes. We camped at this park when we rented bikes and did the Creeper Trail several years ago.
