Food scene: casual to high end

Some of my favorites where you are rock up and grab a table in your shorts or dress up if you feel like it. Its casual, fun and relaxed. But if you fancy stretching the budget and enjoying some excellent food we have all that too!
There are very few places this close to the water on Provo - enjoy the beach, the bar and the food! This is 5 minutes walk from the apartment.

This is tucked away at the back of a busy road but has unrivalled views of the mangroves. If you are interested in local bird life, this is the place to go. The food is local cuisine - cheap and plenty of it.

Described as Provo's equivalent of a speak easy, this place has it all: great food (a wide range of Poutines amongst other things), great views and on Wednesday's live music. Only open in the evenings, very popular local hang-out. Closed on Mondays.

Hard to find a sit down restaurant any closer to the beach! Open throughout the day, a lovely older style restaurant serving all the classics. Sunday brunch is fabulous, but popular, recommend you make a reservation.

My personal favorite place - when I want a special treat. Eric is the head chef and you can sit at the counter and watch him at work. Modern French cuisine.

Its really hard to beat the setting: high on the cliffs overlooking the North Shore. A long pier, lovely spots for cocktails and bar snacks, restaurant with sweeping views. Not cheap, and quite the walk when you park, but worth it.

Sightseeing

This is a 20 minute drive from the apartment - the drive is very pretty on sandy tree lined track and you then get to a totally deserted beautiful beach. Not suitable for anything other than a 4 wheel drive.

There is an amazing museum on Grand Turk but if you can't make it over there, Provo has its own museum too: openTuesday and Thursday 10 am to 2 pm Special appointment dates/times for large groups can be requested. Call 247-2160. If you ever learned about the Loyalists during your American History lessons you'll love seeing your history and ours entwined here!

West Harbour Bluff (also known as Split Rock or Pirate's Cove) is a scenic area at the southwest point of Providenciales. This coastal setting offers several interesting features, including a small peninsula with sea cliffs, a small open-faced cave, and about a mile of secluded beach. The West Harbour Bluff area is one of the more remote sections of Providenciales, and about a five-mile drive from any developed part of the island. The view from the top of the peninsula is quite impressive. To the north, the beaches and shallows of the Frenchman’s Creek Nature Reserve can be seen, and to the southwest, West Caicos. If you’re lucky, you may spot a shark in the water below, or find one of the 200-year-old inscriptions left in the rock by past shipwrecked sailors. The West Harbour Bluff area is part of the Frenchman’s Creek Nature Reserve, which continues north along the coast of Providenciales for about 3 miles (4.8 km). For bird watchers, this region is frequented by Brown Pelicans, White Tailed Tropic Birds, Ospreys and Green Herons. Highly recommend a 4 wheel drive or at least a vehicle with good clearance, the road is mostly flat but unpaved.

A very popular activity, make sure you book before you arrive. Lovely sunset walks on the beach with well-looked after and much loved ponies (nearly all are rescues). Often closed for bookings in September and October because too hot for horses :-)

There are lots of kiteboading schools out on Long Bay, but this is my favorite! Absolute beginners to serious experts, kids need to weigh at least 60lb to have a go.

Commonly known as Iguana Island (but officially Little Water Cay) this is your best chance to see Iguanas - way bigger than the lizards and geckos you will have see all about the place, these creatures are well worth the effort. You'll need to take a boat (or paddle yourself there). $10 entry fee goes to the National Trust for upkeep of the park. Please don't feed the iguanas. Caribbean Cruisin offer the best value trip to the island.

West Caicos is uninhabited, has some excellent diving, so I am told, but also a fascinating history. Ask around and find a boat trip out there for a truly off-beat adventure.

North and Middle Caicos are sparsely populated but a seat of history of the Turks and Caicos Islands. If you are looking for historic sites, wild, open, pristine spaces this is the place to visit. There are several passenger ferries a day, cars can be hired when you get to North. Middle is reached by driving across North and then across a causeway. You can do both islands in a day if you get the first ferry over and the last one back. If you'd prefer a guided tour then seek out Twin Island Adventures or Island Tours by Desmond TCI or adventurersportstci dot com.

City advice

Don't miss

Modern Beach Access

A new beach access has been opened in Grace Bay - Turn left at the Inn on Grace Bay and bear round to the right. Public Toilets and showers (not hooked up as of March 2023 so watch this space) board walk - perfect for those who have mobility issues or just prefer an easier walk to the beach. Lovely seating area too.
Customs and culture

Discover your inner Extrovert!

We say good morning/good evening to everyone we pass on the side walk and every time we go into a store/bank/office- it might feel very out of character when you first do it but you'll be surprised what a warm welcome you receive when you acknowledge someone before you start asking for directions/help etc..
Book before you go

Baby stuff

There is a new baby rental agency in town which rents are pack and plays, strollers, high chairs etc. visit babycay dot com for information
Getting around

car rental

All the usual suspects are here: Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt Payless, but there are also a number of local companies. check out Islandlifejeeps dot com for vehicles that will take you to the most remote locations, ecartci dot com, Caicos Wheels dot com, Scooter Bobs tci dot com (also has electric bikes) TCI Car Rentals dot com. Officially most places wont rent to you if you are under 25, but call them and they will negociate a special rate for you.
Getting around

taxis

Taxis here are almost always large minivans, they have a reputation for being pricey, but they are well regulated by government. Many of the companies are taxis and tours operators and will happily organise tours of the island for you. There are many to chose from. go to visittci dot com and select getting around to find some recommendations. I will leave a list of others in the apartment.
