Arts & Culture

This is Frederick Douglass's house located in southeast DC. The property is beautiful and tours are free. We recommend calling ahead to make sure there is room on the tour you want. Frederick Douglass had a significant impact on this country. Everyone should visit this property; however because it is located off of the Mall, many people miss out. From the National Park website: "Frederick Douglass spent his life fighting for justice and equality. Born into slavery in 1818, he escaped as a young man and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. Today, people everywhere still find inspiration in his tireless struggle, brilliant words, and inclusive vision of humanity. Douglass's legacy is preserved here at Cedar Hill, where he lived his last 17 years."

Part of the Fort Circle defenses around Washington, DC, during the Civil War. The fort is made of built up dirt walls. The National Park Service planted many trees and other vegetation to preserve the hill. There are some nice little trails in the park. Wear closed toed shoes and pants when you go because of insects.

Very interesting if you're looking for an off-beat, free museum. This museum is most easily accessible by car. It contains one of the largest collection of human remains, most of them from the Civil War. One of the most famous pieces on display is the bullet which killed President Abraham Lincoln. Also check out the National Park Seminary across the street when you go.
