Food Scene

Awesome coffee. Tell Juana, the Colombian barista, that Alex your Airbnb host sent you! She will probably make you a strong one when you do! Also, the breakfast is great there. Try the breakfast burrito or (my favourite) the Tijuana Breakfast!

Worth a visit for sure! This is the original Campos cafe, which is now one of the biggest coffee brands in Australia (and certainly the most highly regarded). When you watch the baristas in here, it's easy to see why they are so successful. They take enormous pride in their coffee, and they never put up a coffee that they aren't 100% happy with. You can try a few different seasonal varieties of beans in here as well. Maybe go for a single origin Kenyan for a sweet, fruity like espresso, or a Colombian for a smooth, full bodied taste. If you are new to the Campos scene though, best just to go for their house blend - you won't be disappointed!

Hands down the best breakfast you'll have in Sydney. It doesn't matter what you'll get, they will do an exceptional job. The coffee isn't bad, either! This is probably the pinnacle of the Newtown breakfast scene. We love it!

A bit more of a walk, but if you've got a hankering for a Sausage Roll, you won't get a better one than the pork and fennel. The lamb one is a close second! Coffee is also a winner!

One of Newtown's Hidden Gems. It's off the beaten track (only just), but therefore only the locals know it. They serve a large selection of large, gourmet pies and sausage rolls. The service can sometimes be a little disappointing, but the pies make up for it! I don't have a personal favourite because they are all so unique and delicious, but I usually can't go past the slow roasted pork with apple and barbecue sauce!

Literally next door, this place does excellent middle eastern food! Go in an enjoy bottomless bowls of breads to accompany the baba ganoush. The fellafel is a personal favourite, as is the Lamb Shawarma. Excellent!

For a quick, healthy smoothie or a vietnamese pork roll on the run, this place is cheap and excellent value for money! The fresh rice paper rolls are also a great bargain! I eat lunch here at least a couple of times per week!

You might like the name but we love the food! A little pricier than some of Newtown's other Thai Restaurants (for a real cheap and fairly good meal, try Newtown Thai or Newtown Thai II), but we think the food here is as good as you can get on the Thai food scene in Newtown (a very competitive market!). The massaman beef is always a winner, as is the pad see ew!

If you like burgers, you need to try Mary's. Perhaps a little noisy in there, but really simple, really sloppy, American style burgers. Definitely worth a try!

Drinks & Nightlife

Perfect for an afternoon ale on the balcony, watching the people go by! Closes fairly early due to noise issues, so don't expect a long night out there. I wouldn't recommend the food, but I like the vibe.

Now this is a GEM that you have to see. If you are there on a Wednesday or Thursday night, head up for the live music that kicks off after the dance classes finish at about 8.30pm. Or why not even join in the fun and do a swing class on a Wednesday night or a Rock n Roll class on a Thursday? I'm a regular at the Thursday night Rock n Roll, and boy I wish I didn't have to work on Fridays because it's always a great time up there! The American-style menu is also top notch! Maybe a little on the guilty pleasure side, but certainly worth a go. Oddly seems busier on weeknights, particularly Wednesday and Thursday, than the Saturday. Definitely one of my fave's!

The only rooftop bar in Newtown. Not bad for a cheap week night Schnitzel, but also great for some fresh air on the rooftop with a delicious lager in hand!
