Cob Cottage

Channel the pursuit of pause in this one-of-a-kind earth house. The cozy retreat was hand-sculpted using local and sustainable natural materials, and features a central living space with cantilevered slab stairs leading to the loft bedroom. Guests have access to the entire cottage and surrounding property. We live in the neighbouring house, and are happy to give advice or answer questions to help you make the most of your stay. The neighborhood is quite rural and mostly agricultural with several farms and a small private vineyard. The home is a 10 minute walk from the beach and a 20 minute walk from a family grocery and deli specializing in local organic produce. Mayne Island has a small community bus. Times and routes are limited, particularly in the winter. It will stop at the driveway. We also have an official hitch hiking system with signed Car Stops where you can wait for a ride. Usually you don't have to wait long. We are happy to offer pickup and drop off at the ferry dock as a courtesy to encourage car-free travellers, on days when the community bus is not running. Please let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming without your own transportation, and we will make sure that either we or the community bus (which will drop you off at our driveway) are there to meet you when your ferry arrives. The BC Ferries terminals near Victoria and Vancouver are easily reachable via public transit from their respective airports and downtowns.

Very small (under 300 square feet), very sweet house for one or two. Double bed, bath with shower, LIGHT cooking, wood stove and electric heat, driftwood deck, partial water view. On same beach lot with larger vacation rental and you share yard and beach with guests staying in other house. Bring your kayak, paddle board and/or bicycle. As noted in the house rules, OUR BOATS ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RENTAL. They are old and unsafe and the waters here can be challenging. NO EXTRA GUESTS.

The neighborhood is beautiful and walkable, as well as within easy distance from the SJI ferry terminal and downtown Anacortes restaurants. Steve and Cindy are terrific hosts: very proactive and super responsive. Would recommend to anyone.

Philip’s place was beautiful and calm. It exceed our expectations and we very much enjoyed our stay. The large windows make you feel as though you’re outside and made the home feel very peaceful. We really appreciated the cookware and well resourced kitchen! Phil was also a very communicative and great host. He even scored us an earlier ferry ride when we were looking for another time slot. Overall we would definitely recommend!

What a lovely place. There were two decks to choose from, both with great views of the water. Very close to the ferry (in fact, I think the closest home to the ferry), just in case you're biking and don't have a car. Despite being close to the ferry, there wasn't too much noise (you will hear the foghorns though!), and a short drive to the main town area. Recommended for a quiet escape!
