Places to stay in Lifford

Places to stay in Lifford
Donegal tops the list as the "Coolest place on the planet to visit 2017" - National Geographic Magazine. Our stone cottage is a restored farm building ( originally built 1852 ), a modern touch with tranquil decor. It's behind our home yet private, quiet and tucked away in the countryside. The ancient Beltany Stone Circle and historic Raphoe makes this the ideal hub from which to explore the magic of coolest Donegal.
We are 5 minutes walk from the Beltany Stone Circle c. 3000.BC. An ideal getaway for anyone wishing to escape the pace of modern living. Take a step back in time and relax in our warm, cosy cottage. Donegal is top of National Geographic "Coolest place on the Planet" 2017 - "...you only have to drive a few miles to have a beach or a road completely to yourself. It’s a warm-hearted place, but wilderness always feels just a stone’s throw away. And it is wilderness . . . world-class wilderness. We think it’s due a big year.” Beltany Cottage is the perfect location from which to explore the beauty of Donegal and the northwest coast , 40 minutes drive to beaches, mountains, rugged coastline, and the bogland wilderness. On a clear night you might even catch the Aurora Borealis. Visit Europe's highest sea cliffs Sliabh League or find the start of the Wild Atlantic Way on Ireland's most northerly point , Malin Head. Our hinterland in Derry offers the historic Walled City tour or a drive to the World Heritage site at the Giant's Causeway. In short, Donegal is Ireland in microcosm but unspoilt by motorways and urban sprawls." Up here it's different" come visit us. Places of interest - Oakfield Park/Glenveagh National Park and Castle / Sliabh League Cliffs / Giants Causeway / Derry Walled City / Malin Head/ Wild Atlantic Way. This is Ireland's most northerly point and most beautiful.
We live in the rich pasturelands of east Donegal with rolling hills and patchwork field patterns. This is where you find our quaint heritage village , once a thriving market town with many of its 19th century buildings still adorning the centre. This was an ancient settlement probably before Christianity arrived. The nearby Beltany Stone Circle was an important pre-christian ritual site. Raphoe in gaelic is Rath Both , the fort of the huts, which refers to either ancient dwellings or the holy huts of the monks. There was a monastery founded here by Eunan, the biographer of Colmcille , you will find the 9th century stone lintel of the monastery church in the vestibule of St. Eunan's Cathedral where the clock tower can been found. This historic building is worth a visit and dates back to 12th century. Raphoe also has an imposing ruins of a 17th century castle built by Bishop Leslie, of the Church of Ireland. On the outskirts is Oakfield Park, once the Deanery to the Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe and now a privately run parkland and walled garden amenity in the summer months, there is even a steam train running through the estate. Raphoe is an ideal hub from which to explore the rest of Donegal which might seem small but its almost 150km from Malin Head in the north to Bundoran on the Donegal Sligo border - a two hour drive and that's not taking in the many inlets and rugged coast of the west or the mountain terrain in the centre. You could spend a week in Donegal and only have seen half of it !
  • Absolutely five star accommodation with beautiful countryside and a lovely walk up to the Beltany Stone Rings. Really worth a visit.

  • I’ve been a bit slow to post Mary’s review because I simply couldn’t find the words. As Anthony Bourdain said “it’s an irritating reality that certain places defy description....they seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about. For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there”. While I’ve taken a few editorial liberties with AB’s original, that’s really it in a nutshell. This residence is special, rare. It’s no surprise that they have repeat guests. We plan to join that list. For the practical thinkers out there - know that the property is nicely situated for good access to Donegal and the northwest. It offers every amenity, generous and available hosts, a magazine worthy environment, and an ancient stone circle 5 minutes walk from the back gate . There are two sweet doggos, a suitably sassy cat, horses walking past from time to time, and Mary’s homemade bread. Go. You’ll never regret it.

  • The accommodations were remarkably clean and comfortable. If you want a very private setting, away from noise and bustle, but still somewhere close to most locations, this is perfect. The grounds were beautiful...you could tell there was great attention to detail on everything.

  • Mary’s cottage was peaceful and tranquil, central to visit County Donegal and Northern Ireland. The town of Raphoe was lovely, and far away from hoards of tourists. The cottage is located just behind the main house and so close to the Beltany Standing Stones, which we had all to ourselves! Staying here was truly the best way to experience the Wild Atlantic way of northwestern Ireland. Thank you, Mary, for providing such great tips and snacks for us! It was such a memorable trip for all!

    Courtney2019-09-13T00:00:00Z
  • What a hidden gem. Unbelievable cottage with a beautiful garden and Beltany stone circle a stone throw away. Mary was a great hostess, who was generous in providing goodies. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet peaceful place, close to beaches and the coast.

  • Donegal is a magical county, full of stunning scenery and history. Mary’s house was of an extremely high standard, with every possible need and comfort considered. Highly recommended!

  • in raphoe you will find a quiet cottage, which gives you the feeling that you are coming home a bit. Our hostess mary has struggled to make us feel welcome, coffee, cookies, chocolates, something to drink. and to top it all off a very tasty Irish soda bread. at the cottage there is nothing to criticize everything is there, beautifully maintained and relaxing. if you have any questions, mary will help you from tips to where the good food is to even cleaning the cottage. nothing is too much for mary. it is also included that raphoe is actually very centrally located and therefore a good base for the rest of donegal.

    Stefan2019-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • A heavenly magical spot, the fantastic glass conservatory, the gorgeous gardens and opening the impressive gates to make our way up to Beltany Circle were amongst the highlights. It is a marvelous spot. We only had 3 days and would have loved a week. Mary was a fantastic host full of suggestions and marvelous stories about the area. She helped us out with plans and any of our requests including offering us the lower garden/field/orchard to play with newly purchased hurling sticks. Her recommendations in the book at the house were full of great material. Thank you for a very memorable part of our holidays in Donegal. very best,

When I got to Letterkenny she very kindly collected me from the bus station and showed me my room which was spotless! It’s not too far from Letterkenny town either which is great. As I was new to the country, Marian helped me in every way that she could that were all kind and ensured I was safe and comfortable at all times. Her place was also that very clean and had all amenities for a sophisticated stay. I would highly recommend Marian’s place for the best reception and a convenient stay. • My 2nd night staying in Francis & Marianne’s house. Once again, all was really good. Excellent accommodation, top location & a lovely couple as hosts. Will be booking their place in Lifford again. Highly recommend 👍😊

  • Francis was so welcoming and nice! She went above and beyond what we expected. Her home was warm and very clean. Wish we could have stayed longer! We would gladly stay here again on our next trip!

  • Great place to stay, was working in the area for the week and needed to stay local. The home had everything I needed for the week, the en-suite bedroom was lovely decorated and warm and cosy. The area is quiet and I had a great nights sleep. Was able to make full use of the kitchen facilities. Would definitely recommend and stay again in the future. Thank you so much for the stay.

    Val2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • I was so glad to have found and had the pleasure of staying at Francis's place. Although we didn't meet Francis, his wife Marianne was wonderful. As we were up in Strabane to do a show, she bent over backwards to help us get checked in by dropping the key to us. Her shared accommodation was warmly opened to us. Beds and bathrooms were clean and we were even provided with some cereal, bread, tea and coffee for breakfast. If ever in Strabane again and in need of a place to stay, we will certainly be looking them up again.

    Richard2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Very enjoyable & comfortable stay last Saturday night in an excellent Airbnb accommodation in Lifford, Co. Donegal. I must mention Marianne who could not have been more welcoming, friendly and helpful and so an overall top rate owner & host. I am a GP and, during some weekends, I work the late Saturday night & early Sunday morning GP Out of Hours shifts in Strabane Health Centre. So Francie & Marianne’s place is the ideal accommodation for me on those particular Saturday nights. I therefore highly recommend it, would score it 10 out of 10 and I certainly intend & hope to stay there again on future occasions. Kieran

    Kieran2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great place and great hospitality. Easy to get to Strabane was a very comfortable room and the host was very helpful. Would definitely come back!

  • Excellent welcome by host Marianne. Accomodation was very well presented & whole house including rooms was immaculate. Beautiful christmas decorations. The bunk room made two girls age 3 & 4 very happy indeed and were so delighted to wake up the next morning to sweeties in their very own Christmas stockings! Dog friendly and hosts were very kind to dogsit for a couple of hours while we went to Oakfield Park Santas express. Delightful stay and highly recommend. If coming back next year would definitely stay again

  • This little cozy cottage in this little hamlet off the beaten track were just the things we were looking forward to find. The conversation, the feelings of living where life somewhat stands still, the pub two doors down and the Derry experience made it one of our highlights of our 20 day self guided tours of this beautiful country. Our hostess was so accommodating, friendly and helpful.

I stayed here with a friend recently and we loved it a great spot to further explore the area. It's so good I have booked again later this year for a trip with my husband.

  • We have just got back from our first experience of air b&b in Ireland. We booked to visit family and were traveling with a 1yr old. The place is fantastic, it has everything you could need and with a little one there are stair gates, fire guards, baby cot, playpen with toys and a high chair already there. We also noticed a prep machine and steriliser for younger babies. It’s amazingly clean and comfortable and very nicely decorated. We couldn’t have picked a better place and will definately book again. I can’t recommend this place enough, we had an amazing time

  • We loved staying at this apartment. It was perfect for us. The welcome we received (thanks Claire :-) ) the welcome basket and other thoughtful touches made our stay very comfortable with the kids and easy. The heating was perfect for us coming from summer in Australia to winter in Ireland. Great view over Clady from the kitchen window. Very clean and comfortably decorated. We certainly felt like we were at home.

It was warm, clean & spacious & a lovely, quiet haven which was just what we needed on this particular trip away. The welcome basket with some essentials & treats was a lovely touch. Thank you Claire for allowing us to use your cabin. We thoroughly recommend it & would return without hesitation if we needed a place to stay in the area.

Come and stay with us in our ancient farmhouse, built originally in 1611, and passed down in our family for generations. Within easy distance of Londonderry which is City of Culture 2013, and its airport. Close to the Ulster American Folk Park, Grianan Fort and a hour's drive from Glenveagh Castle, not too from the Giant's Causeway and the beaches of the North Coast. Excellent restaurants nearby in Lifford and Strabane. We are also setting up a small museum to describe the unique history of the property. The house is set in beautiful Donegal farmland, and we also have a fishing lake, for coarse fishing.

  • This is such a welcoming, grounding, calm house, I really loved staying here, the photos do not do it justice at all! Its a beautiful old big house, my bedroom was huge and the windows opened out to this ancient red apple tree, the beds are really comfortable. Jean and Mervyn are just lovely people. Jean's breakfast was so good, perfectly cooked and five star. This is a gem of a place, incredible value and definitely recommend. Only point is that the dropped pin in the Google directions takes you to another house nearby!

  • Irish hospitality at its best! It’s a treat to stay in such an old historic house. Mrs. McKean is a pro who has been doing this BnB business for years. Note to travellers, it’s a secluded place, so you won’t be having any late nights at the pub in this area.

We live in a detached house with a large garden in the countryside. It is recommended that guests have a car during their trip as we are approximately 10 minutes drive to Letterkenny Town and 20 minutes to Derry City. However, there is a bus stop to Letterkenny about a ten minute (unpathed) walk away and we can also provide transport in our cars where possible.
There is currently an upstairs triple bedroom with en-suite shower room that can sleep three people. There is kingsize bed with a single bed in the room. There is a second living room for guests to relax in addition to the kitchen / living areas. Our own bedroom is at the other end of the house so any guests will have peace and privacy in their own area of the house.
  • A lovely quiet, clean home. Erin made us very welcome and gave us great ideas for places to visit in the area.

The house is in a small cul de sac.Perfectly situated for access to town and all amenities. It is very quiet and overlooks the ancient Kiltoy ringfort. As there is limited public transport in Letterkenny a car is advisable. To walk to town is approx 30-35 minutes. Taxis are available all day. Usually costing 7 euro. Airport City Of Derry Airport. Bus Eireann bus company. Local taxis and private tour operators.
Very quiet centrally located house. There is one double room which accomodates max two people. Shared bathroom. Due to lack of public transport it is important to note that it is approx 30-40 walk to town centre.
Letterkenny is the largest town in Donegal. It is a busy thriving multicultural town with a wide variety of activities both in town and surrounding areas. The local golf course is five mins drive away. Aura leisure centre is a modern facility and has great activities for adults and children. There are two town parks which are lovely spaces to spend time. There is a cinema, theatre and arts centre which provide a varied programme of events throughout the year. As a growing multicultural town this is reflected in the variety of restaurants and bars all within a shirt distance of each other. The Wild Atlantic Way is a huge part of Donegal. We have the most magnificent coastline and Winter or Summer there are just beautiful beaches to walk on. Mt Errigal is the highest point and if feeling energetic is the best way to see Donegal in all its beauty. There are fishing trips, island trips, horseriding, go karting, hiking and many more enjoyable things to do. And of course it's the people who live here who really make it special.
  • Beautiful clean and cozy room with everything I needed for a great stay. What a wonderful bed, hotel quality. Slept so well. We had the whole place to ourselves in winter mid-week and the working fireplace was a nice bonus. We have no regrets and are grateful for the stay.

  • A beautiful home that has been updated recently. David is a great host and accessible all the time. David also offered places to go while visiting. Central location makes walking to local attractions and shopping convenient. A covered outdoor area is quaint and enjoyable even when raining. Plenty of clean space for all 3 bedrooms.

    Claire2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A very nice house with a large plot and a fantastic view over the bay. We were met directly by Olivia's husband who showed us our apartment. The apartment is equipped with everything you need. From travel brochures about corflakes and milk to a television. Thank you for the hospitality. However, there is a small criticism: The address (especially the coordinates) are not correct. It took some time to find the house. But after a brief phone call with Olivia, that was not a problem at all.

  • Fergal & Sveta's home is delightful and welcoming. On the back there is a beautiful garden with a small river and a bridge of an old disused railway line. Fergal & Sveta welcomed us with a tea and delicious scones. The house is a few minutes by car from the center and from a number of restaurants that have promptly recommended us. Excellent experience.

The room was comfortable with all the necessary amenities. Fergal and Sveta are very hospitable :) They will help if something is needed. Breakfast was good. Thank!

  • Catriona and Desi were the perfect hosts, very easy to get in touch with and very prompt in replying to messages. Very thoughtful hosts from the treats left to the messages asking if we got in ok and if the place was warm enough for us getting in were all a nice touch. The house itself was spotless, cosy, comfy and very spacious. It is very central to the town and was perfect for ourselves as it is in walking distance of everything. One of our party also accidentally left a bag behind them and Catriona has been more than helpful in trying to return it to us. Beautiful little place and would recommend it to anyone visiting strabane. Would definitely stay here again!

They even asked us to join them for Christmas dinner as we travelled to Ireland for a last minute emergency on Christmas Eve. We will never forget the kindness and generosity. Staying at their home was like staying at a family home during a very sad time. You can expect to feel at home here and well looked after. Thank you x

  • Absolutely fabulous! First of all, the hosts went out of their way to be sure we were to have a wonderful time! They communicated immediately & gave amazing ideas, directions & variety of attractions to choose from! The home is beyond wonderful! Downstairs has immaculate kitchen, living & dining room. Fireplace is glorious & large screen TV if you are so inclined!! Kitchen has all you need for self-cooking & making tea, coffee. Plenty of dishes! Remarkably clean & nice lamps for extra light & homey touches. Upstairs has 3 bedrooms & bathroom. Each room has different touches of being at home. Comfortable with soft comforters & blankets. Nice shower with hot water & nice force. They even provide nice extra soaps & shampoos for short stays! Very nice for travelers wanting to pack lightly! To top it all off, the location is simply marvelous. On a very quiet street, with the river directly behind. Close to all shopping, able to walk anywhere. We like to fish, and Catriona & Desi went out of their way finding us websites & fishing shops & people to help us fish away for brown trout! Again, so helpful, courteous, & friendly. Helped in every way imaginable! We felt at home from the start & stayed longer than we originally planned. You cannot miss with this home & these fabulous hosts!!!

The small refrigerator provided was helpful. Views from the front of the house were a restful green patchwork of gentle rolling fields bordered by trees. We are on the way to the Wild Atlantic Way and close to the historic City of Derry, And not forgetting our celebrated walled garden. Walk through wonderful ivy arches and explore winding paths. • An absolute hidden gem! Great base to explore Londonderry and north Donegal. The wooden huts are so very clean fresh and cosy and the bed outstanding. It was lovely and relaxing lying in bed with the heating on and the window and curtains open showing the beautiful surroundings. The well stocked communal kitchen has everything you need to prepare food and a much welcome bonus. The gardens are beautiful, only once we had arrived did we properly research the history of Dunmore Gardens! If we are ever in the area we will definatly stop by again!

A unique farmhouse cottage sympathetically restored with views of Lough Swilly. The cottage is situated amongst a peaceful and rural setting. This is a wonderful space to relax beside the fire with modern facilities. This cosy space boasts many facilities including woodburning stove, traditional sliding sash style windows, washing machine, modern shower, electric cooker & oilfired central heating. Letterkenny is a 10 minute drive, Derry City 30 minutes, 2 miles from the Wild Atlantic Way Route.
Beltany Stone Circle is a Bronze Age stone circle just south of Raphoe town in County Donegal, Ireland. It dates from circa 2100-700 BC. There is evidence that it may also have been the sacred site of Neolithic monuments possibly early passage tombs. This site is located 15 minutes drive from the Byre. The Stone Fort of Grianán of Aileach is sits on a hilltop in Inishowen County Donegal. 250m above sea level, the stone fort was probably first built on an earthen rath. The view from Aileach is breathtaking. This site is located 25 minutes drive from the Byre. Other popular tourist destinations within 1 hours drive of the Byre are Glenveagh National Park, Sliabh Liag Cliffs, Bloodyforeland, Fanad Head, Donegal Castle, Malin head.
  • Perfect getaway, nice personal touches on arrival! Helen and Edward were on hand if we needed and communication was great. The Byre felt very private but was close enough to towns so eating out was accessible. Local recommended taxi driver was a gentleman and the recommended activities in the area provided us with plenty to do during the day. Meeting the horses and donkey was an added bonus to this already perfect trip. 5/5 stars - would stay again!

  • A fantastic air b n b. So cosy and comfortable. We enjoyed having a wee fire going and when we woke up in the morning the place was still toasty. The bed was so comfortable and the place looked great. A good central location in Co. Donegal. Thanks Helen :)

  • I stayed for a couple of nights over New Year with my girlfriend who had travelled from Scotland. I cannot speak highly enough of The Byre, and of Helen who managed our stay. It was a great, peaceful, secluded spot and was everything we could have wanted. No TV and wifi plus a plus point for us, it was very cosy, very warm, very clean, very well equipped, and finished to an exceptional standard. Little extra touches upon arrival such as homemade scones and a lit fire meant we knew we had chosen well. The location is great, with Letterkenny close by for all your needs. Nice and centrally located within the county meaning that everywhere is within comfortable reach for visitors. I will definitely be recommending County Donegal and especially The Byre to everyone when I get the chance. Thanks for the perfect New Years getaway!

    Daniel2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great little cottage nestled in the countryside. No wifi or tv so it’s a great little place to escape from the hustle and bustle of life. Very cosy in the evenings with the wood burner. Would definitely stay again.

  • The Byre is an excellent place to stay, quiet and relaxing but also well located for visiting interesting sites. All the little touches made it extra special, such as the log stove which kept us warm and cosy - thank you for the lovely stay!

    Arthur2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Byre was by far the nicest and cutest AirBnB’s I’ve ever stayed in. Helen was so kind she even left scones and butter for my friend Katie and I. She has thought of everything in her cottage and even had the fire stove going upon our arrival. I would HIGHLY recommend staying here!

    Jennifer2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • This is such an amazingly place to stay. Plenty of space, fantastic kitchen and an extremely comfortable bed. All thoughts were given to renters with small touches and helpful amenities. Helen left an absolutely wonderful loaf of bread (and pot of butter). I would absolutely stay again and again!

  • Joe and Siobhan's place was TOP NOTCH! Their home was immaculate and beautifully decorated. You couldn't ask for more kind hosts! They were super accomodating and helpful but also gave us our privacy. We were spoiled every morning with fresh fruit, healthy cereals, pastries, coffee and juice. Lovely views too!100% recommend!!

  • Joe and Siobhan are wonderful hosts who make their home their own. Everything was super clean despite pets, the breakfast (with a view of the area) was fantastic and plentiful. You can tell that both are with heart and soul. The house also has a great starting point to explore Donegal and Northern Ireland. We would come back anytime. Recommended for anyone who likes pets and wants to meet fantastic hosts. :)

  • Joe and Siobhan are superhosts, communication was perfect before arrival and during the stay. They also gave us a warm welcome (they and their adorable puppies and kittens) and we shared a very pleasant moment in the dining room chatting quietly in front of the fireplace. The house is beautiful and has spectacularly beautiful views, you can park in the same building and the room has everything you need. Everything is very clean, tidy and with great little details; It has been one of our best Airbnb experiences. The continental breakfast much more than excellent (very varied and plentiful), unbeatable views and everything was great. We would almost say that the photos they have do not do justice to that little paradise, a pleasure, we recommend and we hope to meet again with them, super friendly and discreet. A hug! XOXOXO

  • Joe and Siobhan were wonderful hosts. Rockall House was presented in pristine condition upon arrival with manicured lawns and a welcoming atmosphere. There was ample room for parking , for anything up to a large camper van. Although Rockall House lies a little distance from the beaten track, you are rewarded in the mornings as you cast open the curtains to reveal a postcard perfect vista of the Finn Valley displayed in all it's rugged beauty. The room was immaculate with crisp white sheets , a comfortable bed and pillows, and a very modern and well finished en-suite. We were greeted with a delicious breakfast, and again had a stunning view as we enjoyed our tea and toast, orange juice, fruit salads, cereals, pancakes and buns! I would highly recommend Rockall House for anyone looking for a family atmosphere and great hospitality.
