Kamesei Ryokan is a family-run traditional onsen inn
with mostly warm wood construction and gardens throughout. We are an American-Japanese couple that are happy to share our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada with visitors curious about the Japanese countryside. You can relax wearing yukata robes in your private tatami mat rooms and enjoy the hot spring mineral baths rich in sulfur content. (The onsen baths are tattoo-friendly.) Our chef's creative kaiseki-style dinners are highly recommended.

The space
Guestrooms are traditional Japanese style with tatami-mat floors, shoji screens on the windows and sliding fusuma doors. Room is our budget room 6-tatami mat size with sink but shared toilets.
Bedding is futon mattress spread on the floor (by us).
Bathing facilities are with the common onsen baths, divided men's and women's, both with outdoor baths and all available 24-hours. There is also a family outdoor bath that can be reserved for private use (+2200 yen / 45 min.).

Guest access
Common areas include the lobby with views of the central garden and koi pond. There is a wood burning stove as well as couches for relaxing, reading, etc. We have a thorough selection of brochures and guide books in English and Japanese for Nagano Prefecture.
Meals are usually served in one of our banquet rooms equipped with tables and chairs.
There are wooden toys and childrens books in the lobby, and a game room with ping pong table, LEGO toys and a library.

Other things to note
Meals are also available and are highly recommended in order to fully appreciate your ryokan stay. Chef Takei's kaiseki-style dinner featuring our local cuisine and seasonal ingredients is +3240 yen/person when ordered with breakfast. Prior arrangements required. Vegetarian and special dietary requests can be accommodated. Full ryokan breakfast is +2160 yen/person (or toast&coffee 500 yen).

Where you’ll be

Chikuma, Nagano-ken, Japan

Our onsen town Togura-Kamiyamada is a resort town with the Chikuma River flowing down the middle and surrounded by mountains and hills. There are 30 inns and hotels and 100+ restaurants and bars. Guests are encouraged to wear their yukata robes and our wooden geta sandals and explore the town. There are onsen footbaths, many specialty shops and, at night, 'shateki' shooting parlors to enjoy.
On the hill behind our town is Arato-jo, a mountain-top fortress with a great view of the Chikuma River valley below.

Born, reared and raised in Seattle (U.S. West Coast) and started out in the export-import industry from which began my interest in Japan. My wife Mari and I moved here in 2005 to save her family's inn from being torn down and turned into a parking lot. I would love to share our inn as well as my adopted home town of Togura-Kamiyamada Onsen with guests who are curious about Japan's more traditional side.
