Places to stay in Moshannon
Welcome to the Pennsylvania Wilds! Spend the night in a little clearing in our 60 acre wood. We use only dark sky lights so the stars are in full bloom. Chickens run free, laundry hangs on the line, and your private room provides a quiet haven. Perfect for travellers (5 miles from I-80), Penn State fans, outdoor enthusiasts, or a couple's retreat. We are also a bed-and-breakfast, so a full menu is included. Options rotate but include homemade yogurt, baking soda biscuits, crepes, and fresh eggs
This is a new construction with private, secure access. The basement is unfinished and has a wood-burning stove that will be warm and cozy in the winter. This space is all available to the guest. The finished space is the guest room with newly installed carpet and high ceilings. There is a large window and two closets. The bed is a queen sized bed, and cots and pack-n-plays are available upon request. There is also a private full bath with soaps and fresh towels. Breakfast, coffee, and tea are included, with gluten-free and vegan options available.
Lanse is a small neighborhood here in central Pennsylvania. We have one traffic light in a 15-mile radius. We are close to a large state park, Black Moshannon State Park, as well as access to a Rails-to-Trails route. People enjoy canoeing and kayaking down the nearby Black Moshannon and Susquehanna rivers. Cross-country and downhill skiing are close with Tussey Mountain in State College. Penn State games are most Saturdays in the fall and Beaver Stadium is about 40 minutes away. The house itself is located on ~60 acres of woods and two streams. Martha's Park is a short walk down the dirt road and offers a small playground for kids, Little League games in the spring, and an apple festival in the fall.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Holly and Cody, and wished we had more time to spend a few more nights in this little piece of Heaven 😊. The directions Holly gave were very helpful and made finding it easy, even though we arrived after dark and the flexible check in time worked great for us. They have really gone above and beyond to make sure their guests have EVERYTHING they may need, and the entire basement space was open to us. The bedroom and bath were both Immaculately clean and the delicious breakfast topped it off. We’ll definitely plan to stay again when we travel back to Snow Shoe, from Louisiana. It was truly an amazing experience.

  • Very private, up to date and extremely clean. Nice and quiet

    Cynthia2019-10-26T00:00:00Z
  • Nice place in the country. Cody greeted me, he was pleasant yet to the point as to be respectful of my time. The room was cozy and clean. The bathroom is private although you go into the hallway for it, I had the entire basement to myself. The breakfast was fresh and tasty. A nice touch. Also a keurig with coffee/tea and mini fridge with water was convenient. I will definitely stay again when working in the area.

Tucked away on a mountaintop in central Pennsylvania on 24 private acres sits, North Star Cabin at Oak Mountain Hideaway. This private cabin offers spectacular views of fields and woodlands. Deer are often grazing in the fields as well as turkey and a multitude of birds sing from dawn until dusk. The night sky is dark with clear views of billions of stars and the Milky Way spans the heavens. We're close to Penn State, dozens of hiking trails, the Quehanna Wilds and a wild Elk herd.
This luxurious cabin is a work of art! Ed, co-owner and my husband, who also built our home, renovated this former hunting cabin which we lived in while building our home next door. He custom placed each unique piece of wood and other features and has created a masterpiece for you to enjoy! There are surprises to be found! The cabin played a prominent role in the movie, Generational Sins. It was the boyhood home of one of the characters and the film and is featured throughout the film. We have a copy, so you can watch it during your stay! Many of our guests particularly enjoyed watching it 'on location'! The cabin has one bedroom, one bathroom w/shower, a kitchen and a great room with a futon and a couch, so it sleeps 4-5 guests. The cabin is equipped with most everything you should need. It has a fully stocked kitchen with dinnerware, pots and pans, utensils and cookware. We provide a variety of breakfast items, such as coffee, tea, juice, yogurt, cereal, muffins, and even pancake mix, but you can bring whatever you like to cook. There is a gas stove, refrigerator, sink, microwave, toaster, blender, and a coffee maker. Sheets, blankets, towels, and toiletries are included. We also provide an iron and a blow dryer. For indoor fun we have several board games, cards, puzzles and books, coloring books, and a TV for watching DVD movies. There is no television reception or WiFi, but we have very good Verizon service. The front porch has a couple of rocking chairs and a swing for relaxing outdoors and watching the wildlife. There is an outdoor campfire ring and a grill rack and an outdoor dining area. There are many miles of hiking trails within a short drive and miles and miles of wilderness to explore. Some of the best fishing streams in Pennsylvania are only a short distance away and if you like paddling, we are only one mile from the West Branch Susquehanna river. We offer a shuttle service if you bring your own boats and there is a local outfitter if you need to rent equipment. Winter and summer outdoor activities are endless! At our home, which is next door, we host house concerts from time to time. If you're lucky enough to be staying when we are having a show, you can walk next door to enjoy it! You pay at the door. Our schedule is listed on our website. The cabin is heated in the winter and has AC for the summer months. Parking is very close to the entrance for easy unloading. There is a keypad entry. Now that you know what we have to offer, won't you come and stay a while in the North Star Cabin at Oak Mountain Hideaway? We know you'll enjoy yourself in what we like to call, our Ultimate Restination in the Pennsylvania Wilds!
What we love about the area is that there are no roads, highway noise, light pollution or even neighbors. We are completely secluded and surrounded by the natural environment. We are only a few miles from a wild elk herd and State Game Lands. Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts will see and hear many common species including bluebirds, blue jays, robins, chickadees, mourning doves and many more including the brown thrasher, the woodcock, various owls, turkey, hawks, and the whippoorwill. We have even seen northern harriers and bald eagles. Deer are plentiful and at night you'll hear coyotes howl. Black bear make an appearance from time to time, but rarely. The nearby Quehanna Wilds is a wonderland for hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, bird watchers, hunters and fishermen. There are over 48,000 acres in this wilderness which is part of two state forest natural areas. Here you can pick wild blueberries in late summer and cross country ski in the winter months. We are also near the West Branch of the Susquehanna River on which you can canoe or kayak. Ask about a shuttle service. Unplug and unwind at the Ultimate Restination in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds!
  • This was our second stay at North Star Cabin at Oak Mountain Hideaway. You can read my first review from September 2019 - everything still applies! The fact that we came back to enjoy the cabin again speaks for itself, and this trip did not disappoint. :)

  • Scenic, clean, and quiet - just what we needed

  • Anna Marie and Ed’s cabin is MAGIC. I HIGHLY recommend staying on their properties... for solitude and inspiration. You are surrounded by one of the most beautiful parts of the country, and are treated to generosity far beyond expectations. It’s difficult to come up with words to describe how lovingly-built the North Star cabin is. It is the PERFECT sanctuary for nature lovers, writers and artists. I booked for a week and ended up adding a couple more nights, as I couldn’t tear myself away. Deer, pheasants, elk, and countless birds are your neighbors, while the brightest stars keep you in the very best headspace. I will absolutely return. XO

    J2019-11-01T00:00:00Z
  • This is a beautiful cabin off the beaten path, but still close to many major sights. The hosts are wonderfully friendly people who have decorated and outfitted the space perfectly. The rustic woodworking is amazing. We stayed 3 nights and I really wish it had been longer. I could use a few more mornings drinking coffee on the cozy porch. And they aren’t kidding about the lack of light pollution - on a clear night you can actually see the Milky Way. I’m looking at my calendar now to find some time to come back!

    Sherri2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • We had a wonderful stay at Anna Marie’s cabin. It was very clean and quaint. The property is absolutely gorgeous. She was also very responsive to any questions I had. I highly recommend if you want a quiet getaway. We would definitely go back!

  • You'll love it!

    Benjamin2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Anna Marie and Ed offered not only a place to stay, but also a work of art that was perfected by wonderful hospitality. The moment we stepped into the cabin, we were blown away by the excellent craftsmanship. The creativity used when building was astounding. They've truly done an awesome job. Every time we turned around, there was evidence of hospitality that comes straight from the heart. From the breakfast items provided, to the fully stocked coffee bar, to the toys provided for our 4-year-old, they went above and beyond. We felt like old friends coming for a visit. We absolutely will share this listing with others and hope to be back another time!

    Katie2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • A friend & I were looking for a comfortable, cozy retreat in the woods for a weekend of talking & bonding, & Anna Marie provided the perfect setting! Her clear directions made the cabin easy to find despite its removed location, & the instant we arrived we felt right at home. The cabin is airy, comfortable, & well appointed with more than just the basics, & was a great space for relaxing, reading, cooking, & creating. The bed & futon options were comfy, & the shower good & hot! North Star Cabin's real charm, though, is its setting overlooking a lovely meadow. The wide back porch makes for a wonderful extra living space, & its where we spent most of our time. The half mile hiking trail around the property is steep in sections, but made for a fun leg stretch & exploration of the local geology & plant life. Anna Marie & her husband were attentive & considerate hosts, & are just delightful people to chat with. We had a truly restorative visit, & are already making plans to return to North Star again.

  • Deb is an excellent host. This is the second year in a row that we have rented from her and have nothing but compliments to share. We intend to return for future weekends.

  • I chose The Snow Shoe House for its proximity to PSU. My family was visiting my son for Parents Weekend. The house is 30 minutes from campus. The neighborhood is quiet and the house is lovely. Deb is an amazing host. Her unique hospitality made our visit feel extra special and right at home. With fresh muffins and breakfast/snack goodies in the kitchen and anything we may have forgotten in the bathroom we enjoyed our stay. The beds are all comfortable as well as the living room furniture. The table is large enough to fit 6 people comfortably. Definitely the perfect fit for us and we hope to return.

  • We had an amazing time at this unique place! Super clean! Such a neat experience! We will be back!

    Wendy2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Our second time staying at the Tipi, and it was just as great as the first! We were worried that mid-October would be too cold, but the Tipi was toasty warm with plenty of wood! We cooked everything over the open fire which was awesome, we brought our own food, 2 gal. of drinking water and a bag of ice- that’s it! Robin and Beth thought of it all. So fun!!

    Kayla2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • The tipi is cozy, authentic, and perfect for a getaway that isn't so remote as to be inconvenient. This place is magical. Beth and Robin have included so many thoughtful and ingenious touches to make the experience unforgettable!

    Teresa2019-10-11T00:00:00Z
  • This was our second stay and it was even better than last year. Beth is a very thoughtful and responsive host. It’s a great place to unplug and unwind while listening to nothing but the sounds of the forest.

    Daryl2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a literal 'gem' to find! My friends and I are always looking for a camping experience with our kids, but without having to pack a busload! This place has everything you need - you just bring the cooler, ice, and food! There is so much space to hike, lounge, explore, play, and stretch-out. The compost toilet was the perfect answer to being in the middle of the woods and the solar powered shower, spotless! The place books up so quickly and now I know why - once you stay here once, you are already booking your next trip. The hosts are so sweet and have thought of everything - even a tub for handwashing with water provided. You'll want to stay here, but hopefully not the next weekend I'm looking to book.

Truly a thoughtful selfless host, 10 out of 10 would stay there again!

  • The apartment is on a quaint farm right off of I 80. We got there late at night and had no problem finding the place with Google maps and the directions provided by the host. When we got there, the apartment was well lit, very clean, and just as described. We even had farm fresh eggs for breakfast! We took a nice walk around the farm in the morning and met their horse. It was a great getaway for anyone looking for a retreat away from the city or a convenient stop off of I 80 on their way someplace else!

  • Wonderful place to stay! Always a great get away in nature with lots of amenities to keep you comfortable. We went beginning of November and it was cold but tons of firewood and warm blankets to keep us warm. The stars were amazing!

    Heather2019-11-03T00:00:00Z
  • The property is so nice and absolutly beautiful in the fall. You get both the hideaway and the sleepaway cabin. I only stayed for one night so I did not really use the hideaway cabin, however the sleepaway cabin was very nice and the bed was comfortable. The cabins are solar powered so the lights do not stay on for very long, however they have lanterns that are very bright. Overall the cabins are very well kept and are an awesome place to stay if you are in the area!

    Emma2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • This tiny house is SO much more than just a tiny house. The attention to detail, down to the smallest things, is amazing. The craftsmanship and amenities were outstanding. There may be no electricity or running water, but it still has all the comforts of home and everything is super easy to use and explained. Perfect location is close enough to local events but far enough ‘out’ to feel like a true camping experience. We will be back for sure!!

    Ali2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • We rented the tipi (which means that no other party can rent the tiny house while you are there). We added the tipi for additional room and it was beautiful! I left my full review on the tipi reviews! Highly recommend.

  • This is a great place for a getaway from a fast paced life. It is simple yet sufficient away from all the noise. You get to just relax and enjoy the woods and nature all around. Beth and Robin are excellent hosts and made sure we had everything we needed and would have gone out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We would definitely go again if we get into the area again. I'd recommend it to others.

  • The tiny house hideaway was an experience not quickly forgotten. We are already planning on going back. The peaceful, private site was a little slice of natural heaven. Designed and built so well, with a lot of great touches to make it extra magical! All the amenities of a high end "glamping" experience, unplugged and solar powered total immersion in the beautiful forests of Pennsylvania. Shower and bathroom were totally clean and easily useable. Bedroom was cozy and super comfortable. Great hiking trail, peaceful, quiet space in the soft floor of the pine forest for yoga and meditation. Our hosts were as pleasant and helpful as could be. Felt relaxed, comfortable and totally at home! Highly recommend a stay here!

  • My friends and I stayed at jeffs cabin this past week and had a great experience! The cabin has four comfy beds, Keurig, fireplace, grill, blankets, utensils, and just about everything you would need. We chose the location as it was only a 30/40 minute drive to Penn's cave and Bald Eagle state park which has a good beach to relax on. The cabin is more secluded so its the perfect place to get away and there were trails behind it as well. The place was extremely clean and cozy and we would definitely recommend it!

    Erica2019-06-02T00:00:00Z
  • We had an excellent stay here on a snowy winter weekend. The cabin was comfortable, clean, and well appointed, and the property was secluded. We enjoyed exploring the many acres of woods behind the house, playing board games at the kitchen table, and hanging out around the wood stove. The yard was great for stargazing. Communication with the owners was excellent and check-in and check-out were seamless. We hope to return in the future!

Tucked away on a mountaintop in central Pennsylvania on 24 private acres sits our home that we fondly call, Oak Mountain Hideaway. We’re happy to share it with you! This two story log home offers spectacular views. Deer are often grazing in the fields as well as turkey & a multitude of birds sing, dawn until dusk. The night sky is dark with millions of stars! We're close to Penn State, dozens of hiking trails, the Quehanna Wilds, & a wild elk herd. Come relax, unplug, & unwind.
What is unique about this space is that we built it ourselves. I designed it and my husband and sons (and son-in-law) built it. We used stone from the excavation of the foundation for the stone fireplace. It has a great room with cathedral ceilings and one wall is completely windows which provides an amazing view of spectacular sunrises, fall leaves and the deer grazing in the field. The first floor bedroom and bath are private and there is also a half bath which guests are also free to use. The other bedroom is at the top of the stairs off of the loft. Parking is very close to the entrance for easy unloading.
We provide a shuttle service for an added fee. Unplug and unwind in our mountain hideaway!
  • Oak Mountain Hideaway is exactly what it sounds like- a gorgeous, comfy cabin at the top of a mountain. Anne Marie was a fantastic host, incredibly welcoming and helpful. If you are a PSU student, definitely check out this place for a fun weekend away!

  • if you are going to Pen State for a football game, graduation or any occasion, this is a perfect place to not only visit Penn State but also get a great taste of Pennsylvania Beautiful nature and wildlife. their house and a cabin sits on a 24 Acres of beautiful landscape which is nicer than a state park.

  • We just stayed at Oak Mountain Hideaway for the third time. I would say this time was the best, but each time has been perfect. You will not find hosts any more gracious and accomodating than Anna Marie and Ed. Their hospitality is combined with a beautiful home and surroundings. And you won't find a better breakfast in a five star restaurant. We are already planning our next trip there. Don't miss this jewel when visiting the PA Wilds!

    Vicki2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time along with some friends at the Oak Mountain Hideaway B&B this past weekend. The weather was beautiful. Ed and AnnaMarie are great hosts. Was awesome to get away to the mountains, in a quiet serene place and enjoy God's Creation. Their home was beautiful, everything was very clean. Beautiful views. They made us feel so much at home. Went out of their way to accommodate us. So many loving touches in their home. Great time getting to know them. Anna Marie is a great cook. Breakfast each morning was delicious with eggs, sausage, french toast w/fruit, egg/ham casserole and much more. Fresh fruit available all day. Sitting around the campfire watching the space station with good company and smores' was a highlight. Was exciting to see the Elk!! Definitely an R&R weekend away!! Would love to go back again and would highly recommend!! Thanks so much Ed & AnnaMarie. Barry & Sharon/Don & Dottie.

  • Beautiful, peaceful and calm oasis in the woods. Dawn’s cabin is sparkling clean, filled with light and thoughtfully appointed with plenty of comfortable seating, a fully stocked kitchen, tasteful decorative touches and a mix of cozy pillows and blankets and textures that contrast beautifully with the gleaming wood floors and large windows. We loved exploring the river outside, running around on the expansive lawn and enjoying meals on the deck with the gorgeous water view. It’s a bit tricky to find the house but Dawn’s directions are clear and detailed. Made good use of the kayak too. This is a beautiful area of Pennsylvania and we are so pleased that we were able to visit Dawn’s cabin.

The cabin, we named 'Lazy River Lodge', is 100% off-grid, powered by solar panels with propane for back-up power, heat and hot water. Energy is stored in salt-water batteries made of earth-friendly materials. This luxurious cabin is nestled in a pristine, remote valley next to the soothing waters of the Susquehanna river and surrounded by nature, only 45 minutes from State College. It is the perfect escape, providing ample room for multiple families to come together and reconnect.
Intentionally there is no television and only wifi for emergency communication so that one can truly experience being immersed in nature. However, if Verizon is your mobile service provider, rest assured you will have a strong signal. Having said that, we encourage you to lock the phones away. There are plenty of board games for family fun, a fire pit for marshmallow roasting, a walking trail along the river, float tubes, and a couple of stand-up paddle boards. The cabin was recently completed, so everything is new, from the Italy-imported gas stove to the Tuft & Needle mattresses and pillows for ultimate comfort and relaxation during your stay.
The cabin provides the comforts of home in a remote and serene setting, a quiet refuge from everything, free from distractions with amazing views, calming waters, surrounded by mountains. Perfect for those wanting a secluded, quiet getaway to recharge or reconnect.

  • 4.5 Stars... This is an amazing gem in the PA hills. Patty (who was born in this 1850's farm house) was an extra gracious host. Our room was small, but did the trick. I must say that this place was immaculate! The back of the house needs to be captured better in photos because it is a beautiful view of the rolling hills with horses grazing in the back with a great tiered back patio. Dug it. Breakfast was delicious too. Only thing keeping it from being a 5/5 was that at night noise travels upstairs. I was awoken by a late night guest checking in.

Enjoyed the view of the horses galloping in the field behind the house. Breakfast was delicious and filling, and for dessert Patty made a homemade berry pie better than anything I’ve ever had. Will stay again on my way to NY!

  • Very pretty house, location, and decor. Patti is very attentive to detail and needs. One thing we missed out on (due to lack of thought on our part) is to take the time and find elk to watch. :) . You will enjoy her house.
