Hands down the best hostel I have stayed in. If you are looking for somewhere clean, comfy and affordable in Matsumoto I cannot recommend this hostel more. The host, Takeru, was ever-present, friendly and approachable, and was more than happy to give his recommendations in the area, anything from local bars, food, hiking trails and even transport options. He is also more than happy to chat, and I even saw him go lend his personal hiking helmet to a fellow guest. I believe the host makes or breaks the experience at a hostel, and Takeru and the other staff go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. The hostel is situated in an amazing location, just ~5 minutes walk to Matsumoto castle and surrounded by lovely local eateries. Despite this being a hostel, I found the sleeping area spacious and comfortable, and the common areas were lively and a great place to meet other travelers or simply chat with the host about life in Japan. If you’re staying in Matsumoto, look no further! This location is in a great location; a short walk from the station and central to stores, restaurants, and bars. The apartment itself is extremely comfortable. There’s lots of room if you have luggage. The bathroom is spacious with separate rooms for the toilet and shower. If you want to cook, the kitchen is well-stocked. The beds are also very comfortable. We were even able to do laundry during our stay! Matsumoto was my favorite place during our Japan adventures. And that’s partially due to how great Mio’s place was. I felt so at home there.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sous Place. As a young family, we appreciated the spacious and well-appointed rooms, including a balcony, a washing machine, and a fully equipped kitchen. Conveniently located nearby were a 7-Eleven and a supermarket, and a small playground was just a stone’s throw away. While walking with the kids to town was a bit of a trek, there was a bus (though with an irregular schedule), and walking as adults took about 20 minutes. We rented a car for a few days (which we recommend to explore the area) enjoying the easy parking possibility. However, the highlight of our stay was Sous himself. His quick wit and proactive assistance were truly impressive. He went above and beyond to help us on rainy days, recommending fantastic children-friendly activities. On our last day, he even invited us to join his family, showcasing the warm hospitality of Japan. These moments made our week in Matsumoto truly unforgettable.
