My own hotel in the south of France … I've been dreaming about that my whole life. Preferably in a small castle. It became an old charming farm with a turret in the French-speaking Eben Emael.
Eben-Emael is located just 5 km from the center of Maastricht and yet you feel like you are in France. That has a lot to do with the culture, nature and warm-hearted residents of this French-speaking village.
Vintage: reliving the 1930s
The style has been thought out for a long time. During my travels, I always went looking for what I don't have at home. Discovering other cultures and atmospheres, that's what it's all about. For example, I love the old theatres in London, books and interiors by Agatha Christie and 'Allo Allo'.
One day, I clashed with grandmother in pictures of her parents' wedding in 1937. Great! Those furniture, set tables, atmosphere, ... And immediately thought: how nice it would be to return to the 30s? Incidentally, we already had an original staircase in that style. The B&B is complete and furnished in the art deco of the 1930s, down to the smallest details.
Why Eben Emael?
With my small business Tourism Kanne, I also organize tours and day trips in Eben Emael. So I knew the charm and sights of this village.
Eben Emael was already an important village in the 1930s with the excavation of the Albert Canal and, of course, with the construction of the giant among the forts: The Fort Eben Emael. During and after the construction, 1,200 people stayed there, including 200 workers. They stayed in wooden barracks just outside the fort or as boarders with the residents of Eben Emael. This gave rise to a lot of chambres d 'hôtes and of course also the grotards (small Walloon living room/cafe). All reasons to return to the atmosphere of that time.
