Places to stay in Long Bennington

Places to stay in Long Bennington
A Grade 11 listed Elizabethan Lincolnshire Longhouse next to the imposing stone Georgian Priory House, noted by TV appearances featuring its unusual interior. Huge chestnut, oak and beech trees welcome you through the leafy wooded drive. Formerly a provider of ales to Priory House and its servants it is now a romantic hideaway with a touch of baronial splendour and oodles of exotica. Relax in the foliage filled conservatory. The spacious oak beamed lounge combines the comfort of the cosy sofas with antique furniture and ethnic art. Curl up in front of the fire and the 42” plasma TV. A traditional Persian carpet softens the medieval style terracotta floor. A pretty little French chandelier illuminates the dining table and leopard skin curtains from the famous Biba's in the 1970's provide a feeing of warmth and privacy. The Inglenook fireplace features a log burning stove. We provide a big basket of logs for your first night and you can purchase more if neccessary. An intricately carved Indian screen covers one wall, installed by the explorer and mystic Sir Francis Younghusband who brought it back from Karachi after he led the British Army into Lassa, Tibet in 1904. A cast iron spiral staircase takes you to the minstrel's gallery bedroom and a secret door in the screen leads to the kitchen and shower room. The Indian theme is continued in the designer built kitchen, incorporating an Edwardian brown glazed sink and a brand new Rangemaster cooker with ceramic hob. You will find everything you need for grand cooking including some basic provisions and condiments in the store cupboard. The shower room features a separate WC and the original decorated Victorian hand basin. We are pet friendly with a small charge and can also put extra beds in the lounge for children. Host a "house party" for family and friends by combining it with the two lovely guest rooms in the adjoining Priory House. You have your own private entrance through your conservatory, filled with foliage, settee and bistro chairs for your morning coffee. Outside the front you have secure parking and garden furniture. There is also access to the walled garden and we can give you a guided tour of the fascinating interior of Priory House which is licensed for weddings and civil ceremonies. As we live next door in Priory House we are on hand to help in any way and here to welcome you when you arrive. We like to get an email or phone call from you so that we have an estimated time of arrival and can discuss any special requests you may have. You can ring us on (phone number hidden) or simply knock on our front door if you need us during your stay. We can also give you more information on local shops, restaurants and pubs. But we know that privacy is the key to enjoying your holiday. It is your own special place! Priory House and the Oriental Brewhouse sit in their own private grounds of one and a half acres. Situated in a quiet part of Long Bennington village near the church we are a short walk or drive to our village shops and three pub/restuarants. There is also a coffee shop and a fish and chip shop as well as a post office/general store and family butchers/grocery shop and a newsagents. If you want a special meal we can recommend The Reindeer Inn. Booking is advised especially at weekends which we will do for you if you want. Newark historic market town is only 6 miles north on the A1 and full of independant shops, coffee shops and restaurants. We love the market square with it's Town Hall and old buildings and there is a market every day except Tuesday and Sunday, a flea market on Mondays and Thursdays. Newark is renowned for it's antique shops. Grantham is the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher and has a market on Saturdays. Both towns have many supermarkets. If you like walking or cycling we are on the Viking Way and have many public footpaths across country fields in the village. There is plenty of parking space in the in/out gated drive. The village is in between Newark and Grantham on the A1. There are railway stations at Newark and Grantham too, from London Kings Cross, with taxies available. There is a bus service to both towns conveniently along Church Street outside the house, timetable available. The nearest airport is East Midlands 35 miles away, where you can hire a car. Your hosts, Roger and Carole, are both artists in fashion and sculpture. So don't expect a minimalist interior here! We are obsessed with collections and decoration. You will find African carved furniture, an Indian dowry chest brought back by us from Rajastan, Chinese coffee table and Spanish red and gold chairs, all mixed up with comfy feather sofas and ornamental cushions. But somehow it all goes together. As one of our comments in the visitor's book for Priory House B&B says "A visual feast! Beautiful, eclectic, slightly mad but great fun and a wonderfully interesting place to stay"
  • Such a beautiful & unique space. We spent two nights here over the festive period and found the barn to be very romantic and the perfect hideaway, whilst it still provides mod cons such as a TV, DVD Player, kitchen with everything you would need to cook your own meals etc...we particularly loved all of the unique decor, antiques and oriental touches. You can literally find a unique ornament or piece of furniture in every corner! Carole & Roger are very friendly and welcoming. The house is very easy to find, just a short distance from the A1 but still in a lovely, rural setting but not too far should you wish to explore the surrounding villages, towns & cities. Thank you for having us, we had a wonderful stay! Rob & Suzy

  • Fab, quirky and interesting place. The photos do it justice and if you're up for a riot of colour and curious objects you'll be happy! We really enjoyed a walk down to The Reindeer in the evenings (good beer and the food looked great too) and had a great indian takeaway from the village too. Lovely misty walk along the river bank with the dog too.

    Peter2019-10-28T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, querky and magnificent. Great village too. Try The Reindeer pub on the main street. You can take dogs in the left hand room, and the food is great.

  • A lovely stay in a quirky, characterful and historic building situated in a peaceful and charming spot. Carole and Roger are warm, friendly hosts and shared interesting facts about the Brewhouse and their own amazing home next door. A memorable experience for us both!

  • I stayed at Paulines flat whilst attending a conference at Newark. Very easy to get to and a lovely warm cosy place. Very clean and lovely big fluffy towels (small towels are a pet hate!) Paulines communication was very good and recommend a local pub for dinner which didn’t disappoint. I managed to leave my phone charger behind and Pauline kindly posted it back to me. Very accommodating and highly recommended

Great hosts that could not be more helpful and provided added touches to the place that made the stay welcoming and more special. The self-catering studio space is private, just outside garden of main house, with its own drive for parking. It's close to the centre of the village and has excellent car and rail connections to other parts of the UK. It is ideal for one or two guests - couples, solo adventurers, business travellers. Simple help-yourself breakfast included, and some provisions, with small kitchenette. There's a garage space on ground floor below if needed for storage. Please note spiral staircase is narrow.
The space is like a tardis. It opens up at the top and is a warm, compact space, simply furnished. Although it is next to a village street on one side, it is generally quiet; you can hear owls in the evening sometimes.
The studio space is near the centre of the village with a greengrocers, a butchers, and two small supermarkets a minute or two away for those wishing to cook. Otherwise, there are two pubs (limited food), two cafes and two good restaurants, one with a wine bar and sometimes live music, as well as good fish and chips, Indian (sit down) and Chinese take-away amenities. The church dates from the medieval period and is well worth investigating. All around there are walks. A drive away, plenty more to visit.
  • Cosy and homely place to stay.

    Juliet2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely lovely stay with thoughtful touches! So warm and cosy. Delighted with the fresh local produce waiting for us with a lovely bottle of red wine. Exceptional guidebook with local info. WiFi info was particularly helpful as it was a bit touch and go with storm Dennis! 100% would recommend and stay again!

    Ellie2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • A well appointed studio space with a few surprises. Clean, quite and relaxing with everything needed for pleasant stay. Great communication from Harriet and what a great location in a superb village in the Vale of Belvior.

    Stephen2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Harriet was wonderful with us, took care of every detail and was extremely friendly. The flat is just like the photos, very well decorated and clean. In the small kitchen, you have what you need, in addition to a pantry that allows you to make your own breakfast. Nearby you can find a restaurant and a small market. The train station is 5 minutes walking, but I recommend that people go by car. If you go to hell, I recommend taking warm clothes, the flat has heating and a hot bedding. My husband and I recommend the place and would go back for a second visit.

    Danielle2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • I have stayed in the main house at Harriet's before and this was my first time in the studio. Cosy, snug, peaceful - I slept so well and got lots of work done. Harriet had filled the fridge with basics and breakfast things and left such a kind welcome gift - a bar of vegan chocolate. Definitely game for a return visit.

    Sarah2020-01-17T00:00:00Z
  • Really cosy and comfortable! Harriet is a great host, very friendly and welcoming! Definitely recommend!

  • Morag and Ian were so welcoming and kind: they provided us with local taxi advice to make getting to and from a wedding easy; their house is sparkling and we enjoyed breakfast they provided. Thanks again!

    Naomi2018-11-18T00:00:00Z
  • I stayed here for 1 night for an event at PFI Karting. Ian and Morag were very friendly and helpful. A lovely comfortable bed. Pub within walking distance for evening meal.

    Carol2018-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • Everything was exactly as described on the website. Very clean, well appointed and all of a good quality. I was a single traveller and felt very safe and welcome whilst I was there. Breakfast was cooked to order, fruit juice, tea/coffee and then either poached or scrambled eggs on toast. You could have fruit and yoghurt instead if you preferred. Small things like fresh milk and iced water were also provided and topped up for the second day. It was just the right amount of hospitality, you could have a chat or just do your own thing if you had a busy day. I would highly recommend their lovely home.

    Yvonne2018-08-26T00:00:00Z

  • A Pleasant , homely house ,set in a rural location , within 4 to 6 miles of Newark. All facilities were in place , tea making TV and a really comfortable double bed . The hosts were really friendly and helpful , breakfast was nice but with limited choice which was enough for me . I would stop here again if i was in the area but be aware if you are allergic to cats they do have two ,which presented no problem for me . There is a pub within walking distance if you wish an evening meal .If you want peace and quiet , this is the place to be

  • We had a truly peaceful stay at Roddy’s gorgeous home!!! Though we arrived late, he greeted us and helped us park and invited us in. We could have enjoyed spending time in his beautiful living room but we opted to sleep because of our early morning schedule. He had water and fruit at our bedside. The rooms were immaculate and cosy. We slept well. The next morning he offered us tea or coffee but we were dashing out the door. I would most highly recommend Roddy’s place for a delightful and very safe place to spend the night!

  • What a gem! Beautifully clean and comfortable room with bathroom in a lovely home. We felt like we had a private wing and had plenty of peace and quiet, with views over hills. Roddy was a fantastic host with little touches of hospitality. It's the perfect stop off the A1 and broke up our long journey leaving us feeling refreshed and restored after a great night's sleep. There's a fab coffee shop in the next village too for breakfast in the morning. Thanks so much Roddy, one of the best Airbnb stays we have had.

  • We stayed here as we were attending a local festival. It’s a very cute little stay. Gavin was a great host, very welcoming, and told us all about the area we were staying. We loved the little touches such as the themed towels and bedding. It was super clean, spacious and had a beautiful outdoor area with a little picnic table! We will definitely be staying here again, it was lovely.

    Molly2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • I highly recommend this detached space in lovely rural surroundings, with hens and bantums running free in a beautifully kept farm. There are great roads and villages all around if you like a country drive and pub. Gavin and Libby were great, unintrusive hosts.

    Malc2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean and tidy in a nice and quiet location in the countryside. Would definitely recommend this place and stay again.

    Jan2019-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a lovely quiet location. Gavin provided a good range of basic food and drink supplies for us to use. Communication was quick and clear.

    Mat2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • You will not be disappointed in booking a stay at The Stable. It is really superb self-contained accommodation, with great facilities, and in a beautiful setting. Gavin, the host and his wife, are fantastic people - so friendly and obliging, and go far beyond the extra mile to make their guests feel comfortable and at home. The Stable at Littlegates Farm is very highly recommended by us, it is very clean and well appointed, and we would certainly return there.

    Anne2019-07-25T00:00:00Z
  • From Gavin's warm welcome and willingness to help in any way he could, to the comfortable and classy accommodation in an idyllic location, I cannot rate The Stables highly enough. Everything about The Stables is quality - the finish, the extremely comfortable bed and furniture, a large screen television and a silent fridge!. And, of course, it was spotlessly clean. Gavin also very kindly provided some thoughtful touches, with everything provided to make yourself a nice breakfast. All for a very reasonable price. The greatest commendation I can give is that I will definitely be back!

    Neil2019-06-22T00:00:00Z

  • This was our third stay here, we keep coming back as the cottage is very comfortable, well equipped and dog friendly. Hospitality great from basics Inc bread, milk etc in the kitchen to hot water bottles in the bedrooms. We cooked a meal and then ordered puddings from the pub which they kindly brought over.. I can recommend the sticky toffee pudding and the crumble!

There is coffee/tea/pasteries in your room and I can offer you a glass of wine,or even some homemade kombucha ! The Vale of Belvoir is on our doorstep , as is Grantham ( birthplace of Isaac Newton ,) & Newark ( holds the largest international antiques fair ). Nottingham is not far as is Lincoln. Our house is actually on the old Great North Road - a recent family guest was very excited about this ! Our Main Road of the village is very wide and the houses stand well are back from the road because if this . There are rumours I have heard that the A1 is going to be the UK’s Route 66 starting in London and finishing in Edinburgh !
  • Great place.

  • Only an overnight stay but, three days later, and the fortifying warmth from the AGA and kitchen table chats are still with me. Such a genuine pleasure to meet Lucy, her daughter and the lovely-long-dog-Lily - who much deserves her sofa shrine and devotional art.

  • We needed somewhere local to stay as we were picking up our new puppy and wanted to split up the journey. Elaine and Richard have a beautiful home and made us feel extremely welcome. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and set us up nicely for a long journey home. Would definitely recommend staying here and if ever in the area would certainly stay again.

  • A beautiful, spacious, tastefully decorated, contemporary, former farm house. Our bedroom was a good size with a very comfortable bed, connected to a modern, en-suite bathroom with amazing rainwater shower and lovely, thick, soft white towels. Elaine was the perfect host, meeting us on our arrival, providing a nice, healthy breakfast and even dropping me back at the wedding venue to collect my car on the morning of our departure. Would we recommend this place? 100% yes. We would happily stay again.

    Adam2019-10-04T00:00:00Z

Great location for getting around and was great value for money - Jo provided a lovely breakfast which was a nice touch. We would highly recommend staying at Jo’s!

  • A lovely place to stay, with super hosts, a comfy room and bed, in a beautiful village. Can't ask for more really!

    Oliver2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • We were working nearby at Belvoir castle for an event. The location was fantastic for this taking is only 7 mins to travel to and from the castle. We arrived to a beautiful garden and wonderful room with everything we needed. A very comfortable bed and a powerful shower made the stay extra relaxing. With fresh cut flowers and all the books you’ll ever need for a chilled out evening in the room. There’s a closeby pub/restaurant with decent and hearty food at really reasonable prices and you’ll have breakfast provided for you in the morn. Thanks so much we really enjoyed the stay.

    Chris2019-05-19T00:00:00Z
  • We were in the area for a wedding and this was the perfect place to stay. Shirley and John were lovely. Check out Belvoir Castle if you stay here!

    Rachel2019-05-05T00:00:00Z
  • Met with a cup of tea and a roaring wood burning stove to relax in front of - a lovely stay with Jo and John!

    Suzie2019-04-01T00:00:00Z
  • The description and photos understate the quality and content of what Jo and his wife are offering guests. The property is clean, the bed comfortable and there is an additional Snug room to relax in and breakfast cereal and toast was served in a separate dining room. The hospitality and welcome was only surpassed by the large friendly dogs and the neatness of the surrounding garden. If you don't like dogs do not worry as they are confined to separate rooms. We highly recommend this property and look forward to returning and they will soon be Super Hosts

  • We stayed at Teri's as a convenient stopover after visiting our son in Nottingham. Really lovely quiet rural space with beautiful views. Really thoughtful touches with cupboards full of essentials. A cost night in and then a day trip to Newark. Teri and Jo are really hospitable and we will certainly be back.

  • Teri went above and beyond to make our visit perfect; thanks so much for your incredible hospitality. We stayed at the lodge as we were going to a friend's wedding in Stubton Hall (walkable distance - approx 25 mins). The setting was quiet and serene - we enjoyed seeing the chickens, dogs and horses, and watching the pheasants hop around in the field. It was the perfect base for us; the lodge was super clean, kitchen utensils available for cooking, and we had a good, comfortable sleep after a long day.

  • We were visiting family in nearby Grantham and Lincoln so Sally's place was really convenient. The pictures don't do the apartment justice, it is light and airy, and so clean. We popped to the local supermarket (ASDA) before arriving to buy some food for tea, the kitchen is well equipped. Sally left a hamper with milk, butter, bread, cereals and jam. The beds are both really comfy. The sofa bed is so easy to pull out. Sally had a selection of toys and my two year old loved the tub of dinosaurs, he played with them for hours! Thanks for a lovely stay. Charlotte

We booked last minute after our flight to Portugal was cancelled due to the storm and wanted somewhere cosy and comfortable to stay for our anniversary. With just two hours notice from booking to arrival, there was fresh flowers, breakfast supplies and a warm welcome. The accommodation is very plush and stylish, and is a home from home with lots of thoughtful things supplied. More like a posh hotel! Beautiful big bed, expensive bedding and towels, everything was just lovely. Would certainly stay again.

  • Teri was very helpful and went out of her way to accommodate my check in time and a couple of requests. The place is in a beautiful idyllic location and surrounded by nature which is what I wanted. Highly recommend if you have transport and enjoy the countryside.

  • A beautiful location to stay in Lincolnshire. I recommend this place to those who love the outdoors and animals. I had a lovely time, and was made to feel very special and welcomed by the hosts. I will be coming back in the future.

  • Beautiful place to stay, the room is like a luxury hotel room with the added bonus of a kitchen. The gardens and lake are something else, absolutely stunning and fully secure which is ideal for the dog to run around and explore. The photos don’t do this place justice, it is perfect.

Dark, gothic and thoroughly theatrical. The Kings Chamber is the most flamboyantly gothic of all the rooms at Manor Court with its riot of plush plum, gold and pewter, with its decadently draped bed and featuring the most luxurious gold leaf bath. Prices are per room per night and include bubbly on ice in your room on arrival, truffles, mineral water, Molton Brown products, turn down service and an a la carte breakfast served by candlelight in the splendour of Manor Courts' dining room.
Hidden in the sleepy hamlet of Thorpe, Manor Court has just four fabulously original and indulgent rooms and suites. Each has its own unique quirks and charms, but whichever you choose you're sure to find oodles of glamour. Tremendous attention to detail has been taken in Manor Courts creation, offering luxurious style with both generous and flexible accommodation. Our rooms are perfect for Wedding Night stays, Anniversaries and Parties with guests being welcomed with complimentary champagne. Or ideal if you are just looking for a romantic getaway.... Eden Hall, the ever popular Health Spa, is a mere two minutes drive for which we offer packages. If you don’t fancy venturing too far then simply relax and enjoy a tranquil boat trip followed by dinner at one of the many restaurants and bars on the banks of the river Trent.
We are set in the quiet village of Thorpe. Just outside the pretty town of Newark-on-Trent that has a weekly market and lovely bars and restaurants. We are only 35 minutes from the bustling city of Nottingham with great cocktail bars and restaurants, a foodie haven! We are also only 40 minutes away from Lincoln with its most breathtaking Cathedral and quaint cobbled streets with lovely tearooms and boutique shops.

We welcome you to come and stay in our cosy annexe bungalow, situated on a beautiful 22 acres of land. Our place is perfect for nature lovers, as you will be able to enjoy long walks around our woodlands and fields. We have an array of birds (including owls and a heron who regularly visits), a small lake, and a large pond with fish. We allow fishing, however all fish must be returned to the water. (Please message us for accurate address because airbnb didn't have the option available)
We are in a great location for access to the A1 and A46, pretty much perfectly in between Scotland and London. This is a two bedroom bungalow, with a marble floor, an open space kitchen/living room and breakfast bar. There is a microwave, oven, pans and hobs if you wish to cook. The conservatory has doors that lead into the garden, and is where the dining table is situated. This is a beautiful room to have dinner in, especially in summer! You will have access to all of our 22 acres of private land, which includes fields, a small woodland, a lake and a big pond. The area is quiet and secluded - a perfect break if you live in a town or city. As mentioned above we do allow fishing in both the lake and the pond, however all fish must be returned to the same water they were caught in.
The closest village is Long Bennington which offers a super market (co-op), post office, excellent Indian restaurant, two pub/restaurants, a deli, butcher, cafe, and fish and chip shop. You can walk to the village from our house, except it's a long walk (about 40 mins). Newark is a historic market town and renowned for it's antique shops. It is only about a 10 minute drive north on the A1 and has plenty of independent shops, restaurants and cafes. There is a market every day except Tuesday and Sunday, a flea market on Mondays and Thursdays. Grantham is also a historic market town and roughly a 20 minute drive south on the A1. it the birthplace of Margaret Thatcher and where Isaac Newton went to primary school. Both towns have many supermarkets. Lincoln is another great place to visit for its beautiful Cathedral and unique shops, cafes and restaurants. Nottingham is famous for Robin Hood and Sherwood forest, but also has a castle and caves you can explore. It is the closest large city, about a 40 minute drive away and boasts a diverse collection of restaurants, cafes, shops, cinemas and even has an ice rink.
  • Really cute, clean and liveable little appartment. It had everything you need. Melissa was very helpful with how to get to the location, about attractions and she answered within a day to all our questions. We had a great stay and would definitely stay here again!

  • This is my second trip here and like last time it was great. The only thing I mentioned to the owners last time was the wifi could be faster for work. When I booked again they had installed a 2nd line to the house and the wifi was much faster so I could work remotely and use it for Netflix etc. The house was up to its usual high standard with everything you need to support a few people for sure. The owners have been really helpful , as I've been working away for a short term contract, and they have allowed me to store boxes and equipment for an exhibition and I probably have been a very demanding guest and they have supported me with all my needs. For work or for a holiday its a great place. There are some really nice local places, such as Belton House, many local villages with superb gastro pubs. And, their land and lakes are a real pleasure to walk around. Or, to find a quiet spot to relax after a hard days work / holiday. I could not ask for more. Thank you so much to the owners.

  • We had a lovely weekend in this spacious bungalow. We were welcomed in and were very comfortable. We visited Lincoln from here , which was very easy.

  • Amazing little place. Melissa and her family we lovely, there when I needed them and invisible when I didn't. Cute, clean, mini home with everything you need and all in such a beautiful space. The grounds are something else and my two dogs just loved exploring the lakes, woods and meadows. Definitely going to be back. Thank you!!

  • Comfortable accomodation with a spacious living area and bright, pleasant dining room. Well equipped for self catering. Good location with peaceful surroundings and easy access. Beautiful grounds for walking. Melissa was very responsive and made us feel welcome. Thank you!

    Jacques2018-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Certainly would recommend this as a location for work or a holiday break. The house had pretty much everything you would need and the kitchen was well equipped. WiFi was not great but the owners know about it and are working on something for future guests. The location and grounds are great, their land has some nice ponds and a little forest. Longbennington has shops , very very good curry kitchen. Two nice pubs. The surrounding area for runners and cyclists is perfect. Very flat and quiet country roads surrounded by some beautiful countryside. The property is great and very comfortable. Would easily suite four people. Lots of space. Basic freeview tv but there is an Xbox if you want to play DVDs. And if you want peace and quiet this place is perfect. The owners were very responsive. Gave me anything I needed when asked and answered every question. At the same time they left you in peace just to get on and do your own thing. If you need a proper shop then Newark has a Lidl which is about ten mins up the road. Good transport links, close to A1, A52 and Grantham to London on a train is a little over an hour. Thanks to the owners for a great stay.

  • The cottages are exactly as described but possibly even more homely. There are thoughtful touches, such as a welcoming drink, milk and chocolates. The whole cottage we stayed in ‘Garden View’ was tastefully furnished throughout and immaculately clean. A selection of DVDs, cosy lounge with fire (and snuggly blanket!) all made for a welcome retreat. The kitchen has everything you may need for looking after yourself and the beds were very comfortable. Nearby pubs and local supermarket, together with local places to visit are mentioned in a welcome pack. Pauline, who lives next door is very accommodating and quick to reply to any queries or concerns. I would not hesitate to recommend and would hope we can return at some time in the future.

Nothing is too difficult for Teri and the team, clay pigeon shooting with Mark is also a must. The surrounding fields are beautiful but nothing beats a hot tub soak while looking out over a frosty lake. Almost don’t want to write this review so we can keep this secret for ourselves! My home is comfortable and developed through time with affection. Airbnb is on top attic floor with steep stairs so not appropriate for those with mobility issues - sorry. Double bedroom, bathroom, TV area + kettle, second bedroom with sofa bed for two children (pre-school go free) OR couple who can cope with intimate space! Help-yourself breakfast included. Downstairs & garden accessible. Bikes available. Lively village and transport links good. Dogs welcome. Come to walk, cycle, rest, tour.
The Airbnb attic space plus own door and (steep) stairway is exclusive to guests, as is the small shower room inc. toilet. There is a double room with one bed, a lounging area +TV, plus smaller bedroom for one (or 2) other/s with a double futon sofa bed. A baby or older child is welcome - there is a small 'den' for children. However, a toddler and the stairs might not be safe, on the other hand, there is a child safety gate now. It might also be tricky for those who cannot manage stairs well. A discussion about this is encouraged. Note that the roof inclines so that it is low at the sides of rooms but there is still full height space throughout. It includes some beautiful exposed beams but has also been modernised. The decor is simple with old and contemporary mix. There is wifi and a small TV. You can hear the occasional vehicle passing and the odd bird hopping on the roof!
Village background: Craven House has old connections with Belvoir Castle estates, like some of the surrounding buildings and the church. What was the old Fleming hospital, developed by a 'good doctor' and the 'friendly society', is next door. There are many Grade II listed buildings in the immediate vicinity. The church is well worth a visit and offers free wifi during the day! It is elegant with its own medieval beginnings, resonant with tales of the Earls of Rutland, the ‘witches’ of the 17th century, the community’s part in the wars. The old part of the village still has long houses and a few remaining walled gardens for vegetable growing. Today, with a population around 3,500, the village is swelling fast and lively with children, schools, playing fields and skate park. There is some light industry at either end of the village, including the claypigeon factory and the stilton cheese factory. Other local produce includes cereals, rape oil, honey, Belvoir cordials and porkpies. Do ask about these. Bottesford facilities: the village has a butchers, greengrocers, plus Co-op (7am-10pm including Sunday) and 'village store' (open very early to late; good selection of wine and ales). There are two pubs though they do not do food at weekends/evenings. There is a chippy, a Chinese and an Indian restaurant, plus the Poppy and Pizzini cafes. A bit more upmarket are 'Paul's' bistro and restaurant, The Thatch. All a short walk away. [Check for some closures on Sunday evenings/Mondays]. With transport, you can get to good pubs/restaurants all around the villages - or head to Nottingham. Other attractions are Belvoir Castle itself, a few miles from Bottesford, with entry to the house or/and grounds (not cheap) mostly on Sunday and Monday from Easter. Look for the castle’s Gothic silhouette when approaching the village. There is Isaac Newton’s house and garden at Woolsthorpe Manor, Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, and Belton House at Grantham. [Check the postcodes of places as there are two ‘Bottesfords’, two ‘Woolsthorpes’ and two ‘Caythorpes’ – very confusing]. Of course, there are many more points of interest including life in Nottingham, the city where I grew up. Some miles drive outside the city, you can find the Dukeries, Sherwood forest, Clumber Park - the ‘Robin Hood’ territory. Rutland, the Lincolnshire Wolds and Derbyshire plus Pennines are really not that far if you wanted to travel around, and there are a number of pleasant market towns dotted about too. In the first six months of Airbnb (to end August, 2016) guests have stayed for the following reasons: walks, the national water sports stadium and rowing, sky diving at Langar airfield, tough mudding at the castle, a number of weddings, business meetings in Grantham and Nottingham, a tour of historic buildings in the area, bell-ringing, horse trials, travelling across the Midland counties, and various London-Scotland trips...welcome all Europeans!
  • A lovely place, with a real family feel to it. A fully stocked kitchen with utensils and pans etc was a great bonus. It is a lived in house, so it has all the quirks living alongside someone else brings, but it wasn’t an issue for me and my children, we were given space and privacy all weekend.

  • Highly recommend staying here, faultless!

My house is close to the centre of the village of Bottesford, which is between Grantham and Nottingham and off the A52. You’ll love the peacefulness of the house and garden. It is good for big groups - please see other listings for more photos and details. The downstairs floor has a bedroom that is convenient for those who find the stairs tricky, for those with small children, and for those with a dog! There is a downstairs bathroom nearby.
For all info on the house and environs, you can read my other listing - 'lovely home near Belvoir Castle' Please note that this is normally my home and so will not be as immaculate as a 'country cottage', etc property. Some cupboards may have files or the odd thing in. Bedrooms are mostly free of stuff, however. Most guests say that the house has a very peaceful atmosphere and this is what I hope every guest will enjoy. Do, though, write in my suggestions book (hall table) with any constructive criticisms.
The village itself has some interesting old parts, especially St Mary's, the medieval church. It is popular for a number of reasons: eating facilities, weddings; as a cycling and motorbike meeting place; for nearby places of interest too such as Belvoir Castle, Belton House and Isaac Newton's house. It is a convenient place to stay as it is near so many routes, north and south, and also close to many sporting centres, eg. the National Water Stadium.
  • Great time away for New Years. Lots of little touches which made it really special.

  • A lovely house and garden in a peaceful corner of a beautiful and friendly village. The house was larger than we expected and very comfortable for the six of us. We ate in quite a lot so the well-equipped and well-stocked kitchen was very welcome. Very close to Belvoir Castle (erratic opening hours, book onto the guided tour if you can; well worth the extra £2) and handy for trips to nearby Newark an Belton House. We ate out on one night at Paul's bistro which is just round the corner and amazingly good value. Didn't meet Harriet but she always responded very quickly to all our contacts.

  • A charming and quirky house in a lovely village. We used the house for a university reunion, our party was made up of 4 adults and 4 children (8months - 5 years). The sleeping arrangements were flexible, a cot, high chair and toys were all provided. Lots of lovely extra touches (champagne!) and very clear information made this a fantastic experience. I would highly recommend and definitely stay again.

    Lauren2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely house with lots of space to relax and explore. Our favourite space was the room overlooking the garden, which featured comfy sofas and lots of books. The kitchen had everything we needed. So many little extras provided, including plenty of breakfast choice - thank you. A great dining area and front lounge too, plenty of room for us all to relax. The attic space was cosy, with little areas for the children including toys, which they loved. Just be careful on the stairs up/down from the attic as they're steep! The garden was lovely too. Would definitely recommend Harriet's home.

    Claire2019-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • Harriet’s place is perfect for a family gathering there is loads of space and a lovely private garden. The house is in a great village location. There is everything you need down to a selection of children’s toys.

Perfect for a weekend get away for a largish group. Lots of reception space so everyone can have their own little corner. Well stocked and equipped kitchen, beautiful and rather grand dining room plus two further reception rooms. Books everywhere! Lovely enclosed garden which looked pretty even in the depths of winter. Some of the decor is still a work in progress which just added to the charm and made it feel very much like a well-loved family home rather than a stark, bland rental, but all is well maintained and immaculately clean.
