Gary was the most wonderful host during our stay! He called me ahead of time to hash out details and the breakfast menu. He had wine, cold beer, and snacks ready for us upon arrival. He also had an iron ready at the last minute when we had an emergency wrinkled shirt. We were attending a wedding in town, and Gary even drove us and picked us up so we could enjoy ourselves! He prepared a delicious quiche, fresh fruit, and custard for breakfast. He showed us around his very unique and beautiful historical property, and we shared great conversation all morning. He even offered to let us use one of his canoes to take a river trip, but unfortunately we had to head back home. Gary was so accommodating and did everything possible to make our stay special and perfect, and that it was! It was a true delight to stay at his home and also come to find that we were kindred spirits and genuinely enjoyed conversations with each other. Our stay was truly magical.

My wife and I really enjoyed staying at The Rosalie! It was the perfect stay for our trip back home to Richmond! The dogs absolutely loved being able to run around and even meet some of the animals near the farm. The views from the porch were breathtaking! We enjoyed a nice family dinner at sunset along with a nice campfire. It was also great to be away from city lights to really appreciate how bright the stars get at night! The house is very organized and even labeled! The deadbolt doesn't have a key, so make sure you don't lock the deadbolt and exit from downstairs. We had locked ourselves out one night, but thankfully a spare key to let us back in. A great stay thanks to Ellen, highly recommend this cozy place full of rich history!

Great getaway with my wife and 2 small dogs. The property is beautiful and we really enjoyed our walks down to the frog pond. Convenience to Richmond a plus as we were visiting our daughter who lives downtown. Will stay again next time we visit as the Rosalie was comfortable and clean.

My husband and I loved staying at the Rosalie! Ellen provided specific info on how to get to the farm, which was especially helpful as we arrived at night. In the morning, we were stunned by how beautiful it is there, and even more so at the end of the day when the sun sets. Her place was perfect for a quiet, rejuvenating weekend retreat. :)

Our stay at the "Rosalie" cottage exceeded our expectations. After spending a fun day at King's Dominion, I, my 9- year old daughter, and a family friend were cheerfully greeted by Ellen, the owner, who happened to be staying at the connecting house that night. Ellen gave us a quick tour of our accommodations and saw to our every need, even with our late night arrival time. We had been worn out from our day at Kings Dominion so it was refreshing to walk into a pristine and smartly furnished apartment. The window air conditioner kept the bedroom at a perfect temperature considering the hot summer heat outside. The apartment was super clean and the furnishings were stylish, thoughtful, and interesting. There was adequate room for our luggage and the beds were very comfortable. The downstairs houses a small sitting area with a large TV and modern kitchen stocked with Italian dinnerware. We did not cook during our stay but the kitchen is more than adequate for guests who choose to do this. The full sized refrigerator kept our dinner leftovers fresh and we reheated some in the microwave for breakfast. We ate our breakfast on the deck of the cottage which overlooks tranquil pastures and several horse enclosures. The setting was tranquil and peaceful. Our main reason for staying at "Rosalie" was to view the Perseid Meteor shower from a wide open field with little ambient light. Clover Hill Farm was a perfect place in which to do this. Ellen happens to be a stargazer and prior to our arrival, had mowed a path in a field leading to an unobstructed viewing place, complete with reclining lawn chairs. We were up at 4 a.m. and saw a beautiful show in the sky. We have already talked about making a tradition of returning to Clover Hill Farm to view future star shows. Besides the Rosalie cottage, Clover Hill Farm also has a connecting home available for larger parties. Before my departure, Ellen gave me a tour of the home and the accommodations were as impressive as the "Rosalie". The owner has gone above and beyond to ensure guests receive a quality experience. Looking forward to a repeat stay.

As the other reviewers wrote, Ellen's home is charming and the pictures absolutely do not do it justice. She has thought of every little amenity you may need (including some you didn't know you needed), from hand lotion to laundry detergent to blankets for stargazing. The property is beautiful and very peaceful. Ellen was very quick to respond and was very accommodating.

This property was very cozy and secluded. Lots of open space for walks and watching the stars at night. Our host was excellent. Great place to relax and recharge.

The guest house is located in a beautiful part of Goochland County, just west of Richmond. It has everything we needed.

Ellen's house is a great place to relax in the countryside. The property is beautiful, the house is updated and comfortable with a quaint and simple vibe, and Ellen is easy to work with. I recommend starting the day walking the paths on the property and ending the day around the fire pit. The only difficulty we faced was that transportation from Richmond airport is long, but some of us were able to Uber without problem. I highly recommend Ellen's home.

My family and friends just returned from a long weekend at The James and Rosalie. The farm is absolutely beautiful! The land is gorgeous and the house is warm, welcoming, and extremely well-kept. It is very quiet and peaceful, but only about a ten minute drive to the nearest gas station, grocery store, etc. Very convenient. Ellen was so kind and easy to work with. Everything about our stay was wonderful! We had a fun and relaxing weekend and are hopeful that we can return in the future!

We contacted Ellen in a state of desperation, our previous host having cancelled on us less than 48 hours before we were supposed to arrive for our working vacation in Richmond. Ellen stepped up and saved our trip. She made a special effort to get everything ready for our arrival on short notice. The James is a fantastic place to have a retreat of any kind. It is capacious (both the house and the grounds), charming, comfortable, and and full of character. Highly recommended!

Our stay was very enjoyable. Ellen had everything ready and we were comfortable and felt at home. I stayed with my wife and 2 daughters. I would say that they are mostly "city" girls, and there was some apprehension about staying in a "farmhouse". To my delight, everyone was very happy and positive about the stay. The grounds are beautiful, and it was great to have some elbow room.

The house was a beautiful, quiet getaway. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and the beds were comfortable. The farm was a lovely setting with a lake, horses, and great places to run/walk during our visit. Ellen was very responsive to any questions I had and the house had plenty of information, take out menus and even a map of the property for our visit.

If you're looking for a quiet and scenic place to get away, this is a great option. The house comfortably slept twelve of us, and the kitchen is big enough to make cooking easy. We spent a lot of time outdoors, around the fire pit and exploring the forest. The only downside was that we had trouble finding nearby activities because cell service was nonexistent, and the home does not have internet. However, if you want to hang out and get away from it all for a bit, this place is an excellent choice.

Shepard and Nancy were wonderful guests and very accommodating. The neighborhood was quite and very close to I-64. The room was very clean and cozy, definitely would recommend.

Nancy and Shephard are both amazing people who have many wonderful stories and even greater hearts. I booked this place last minute and Nancy got back to me in a very timely manner, and even though it was late they both stayed up (and Mc'Lovin), and just like Motel 6 "Kept the lights on for me" They made me feel like family from the beginning until the end, finishing with the famous, lovely french pressed coffee in the morning for my early departure. If I am ever in the area again there is no doubt I will book this place again. If you stay here ask them about places to see and things to do, you won't reget it! Lastly follow the directions they state to get to their house as they were spot on perfect.

I just needed a place to sleep for a few hours before heading to the airport and Nancy's place was the perfect fit. It was comfortable and accurate. She and Shepherd were very accommodating.

Nancy and Shepherd were very welcoming! Very polite and friendly, but also respected privacy. They're home is so beautiful and serene, very clean! Nancy made sure we had plenty of towels, pillows and blankets. (Even putting out fresh towels on the second day!) Location is beautiful, very quiet but not far from the nearest restaurants. Just what we expected to find, everything matched the listing description and photos. Plenty of room for our small group, comfortable and clean beds, and lots of hot water. Cassandra and Dennis were great host. We arrived rather late in the evening due to some traffic and it was nice to have a light left on for us. Communication was great with great and easy instructions. The Guest house is in a great location, quiet and peaceful, and you find just about any thing you need with a short ride down Rt. 60. The place was bigger inside than what we thought which was a nice surprise. Some great wildlife to look at while you drink your morning coffee too.. Thanks again Cassandra and Dennis for making our visit to Richmond a nice one, sure does beat a hotel!!

The guest house at Powhatan was very cute and cozy just like the photos. Cassandra and Dennis had left the porch light on for us, the home was a great size, quite welcoming and had all the necessary items for our stay. All the beds and the couches were comfortable. The hi-speed internet was easy to access and the t.v. too. On the hottest day of 2016, I didn’t expect window unit a/c’s but we were mostly there at night and everything was cool. We ate at “Mabel’s”, a wonderful café next door. The town of Powhatan is delightful, if you get the chance to visit, take a tour downtown and make sure to stay at the guest house too!

A charming home in an adorable town! While we didn't get a chance to meet our hosts, they left everying laid out for us and were very responsive to all of our questions. We (four adults) stayed at Cassandra and Dennis's house after a fun day of wine tasting. We took advantage of the fully stocked kitchen to make dinner, enjoyed watching TV on the big screen TV and had plenty of room to spread out. Cassandra and Dennis had recommended that we try the Four Seasons restaurant, which is located just a short ways down the road, and we went there for breakfast. Great suggestion, and a great ending to our trip to Powhatan! Thank you, Cassandra and Dennis!

Kay's place is a lovely retreat set in picturesque Virginian farm country. The historic house accommodates a large group easily, and is perfect for over-nighting to explore the wine country. Kay is welcoming, very responsive and very accommodating!

I fell in love with Kay's house. When I arrived they showed me around and told me the heritage of the home. Kay and her husband were so welcoming and helpful. They live very close if we needed anything and left restaurants and other information for around the area. I couldn't say enough on how nice these two are. I would absolutely stay here again. Kay's place is very cozy. The drive to her house is so absolutely beautiful and pristine- the property the home sits on is as well. It's very relaxing and quiet because you're surrounded by nature. The home was definitely large enough for our party- 4 adults and 3 children. Two bathrooms were a plus and we had plenty of space to spread out. Kay provided complimentary coffee, juice, water and granola bars. Kay was available via text and I knew I could contact her if we needed anything. She was very friendly and helpful. Thanks so much Kay and Butch for hosting my bunch of gals for our dinner party! With this rental, you get a portion of the house with it's own entrance. It is completely separate from the rest of the house. You also get to enjoy the yard, which provides a nice view and place for kids to play. It's an old house with a lot of character. Kay has done a great job of making this the decoration theme. The result is charming and comfortable. I don't recommend this house to anyone who has vertigo or trouble with stairs. The floor is uneven and the stairs narrow. Although the window unit air conditioning struggles a bit to keep the main room cool, the bedrooms are kept cool. The mattresses are new and extremely comfortable.

Had a great evening at Kay's place. It was clean, comfortable and very inviting. Had a great nights sleep. Worked out well for out group with the common area.

It was top notch. Clean, ready and piratical. Carol went out of her way to make sure that we were comfortable. We recommend it for anyone in the Richmond area since its location is ideal and accessible to various shops, highways and major attractions.

Overall the stay was friendly and quiet. The host was friendly enough to offer carry luggage downstairs and even offered to join for lunch. Room was cozy and small enough to feel comfortable. Neighborhood parking was easy on street by the house in a quiet subdivision. I definitely will return to host place if I need to.

What an amazing visit! You will be hard pressed to find a more idyllic setting. Ed and Amanda have a beautiful home and were kind enough to give me run of the house. The room was clean, peaceful, and quiet. And they have a beautiful front porch facing the alpacas so you can sit and enjoy the view. Ed was kind enough to give me a tour of the property and I met each Alpaca personally. I felt right at home. It was an experience I will not soon forget.

Great host! Very attentive. Fast response! The house is very well stocked and welcoming. Lots of extra blankets, towels, etc. Kitchen has everything one could need.

Our group of 10 people had a fantastic stay. Unfortunately we just missed pool season but we did take advantage of the pool cabana, fire pit, gazebo, horseshoe pit, charcoal grills/smokers, and ping pong table so we were well entertained. The stereo system was another nice bonus, with XM radio and speakers in the house, on the porch, and near the pool. We also managed to squeeze in a trip to Lickinghole Craft Brewery (5.5 miles away). We'll definitely be coming back!

We brought 24 people, all members of the UR Women's Soccer Team, for a 2 day retreat. The accommodations were wonderful. We had privacy, nature, spacious living quarters, lots of areas for breakaway groups.On my morning walks I saw hawks, geese, ducks, and even a Great Blue Heron. We really enjoyed the campfire area (I recommend bringing some firewood, as we did) We would love to come back during warmer months when the pool is open. It was wonderful, and a great value!

The setting was beautiful, the perfect place for our multi generational family reunion.
