  • Sue and Ricks historic B&B was a lovely place to spend the night on the way to the Green Bank Observatory. They are passionate about the history of their property and very knowledgeable! Zeus is a beautiful dog and was very friendly and well behaved, leading us from our car to the house.

  • Had a great time in the mountains! The room was comfortable with a big bed. There were snacks and hot drinks always available and Sue and Rickie were around most of the time with fun stories and local tips. We enjoyed meeting their dog and horses and exploring Highland Co.

  • Great time

  • I enjoyed this clean, spacious, comfortable and scenic spot. Cell service is hit or miss in that part of the mountains so it wouldn't hurt to double check or store your route offline just in case. If you need connection, there's WiFi waiting for you (along with great, friendly hospitality) once you arrive.

  • A nice, and relaxing place in a beautiful area. Sue and Rickie are great hosts and I can only highly recommend this airbnb.

    Mark-Alexander2019-08-04T00:00:00Z
  • This is a really nice place in a really pretty location. It's about a 40 minute drive to Staunton where there are lots of dining/shopping options, so this place is quiet and secluded but not completely in the middle of nowhere. There are also some hiking options not too far away. Sue was very friendly and she made us a great breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast and watermelon. Overall an excellent host. (Bonus points for having a super friendly dog) Really don't have anything bad to say about our stay!

  • The place was perfect, exactly what we needed and expected. 5 stars for everything, but most important was your quick responses, cleanliness, and having the heaters running when we arrived was very thoughtful. Thanks!

A spacious and comfortable home-style Cottage with 3 bedrooms, located in Monterey , Highland County, VA. A short walk to shops, restaurants & festival activities. Skiing @ SnowShoe Mtn, Biking, Motorcycling, Antique Train rides are some of the local activities.
Our comfortable home offers 3 bedrooms and is conveniently located in Monterey. Our home will sleep 6+ , and your children under 16 stay free.
We live in the small town of Monterey. There are only about 200 people in town, but we are the county seat of Highland Co. Our county is the highest (altitude) and the most sparsely populated county east of the Mississippi. Beauty is all around and mountain scenery is right out our back door.
  • We stayed at Darlene’s over Presidents’ Day weekend for a long weekend ski trip at Snowshoe. We found Darlene’s place by happy accident—everything at Snowshoe was booked up. Darlene’s place was cozy, easy to get to from DC, clean and about an hours drive to Snowshoe. We weren’t able to meet Darlene this trip (she was sick with a cold), but she was very responsive and easy to get in touch with. The place was clean, well-decorated, and cozy. Darlene sent info on how to set up and use the fireplace, which was perfect for after skiing. Would definitely stay again!

    Kim2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Quiet, charming and only 1 hour and 15 minutes from Snowshoe. We very much enjoyed our stay!

    Monica2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • This quaint little house provides all the comforts you need in the town of Monterey. Your hostess couldn't be better if she tried!

    Kristen2019-10-31T00:00:00Z
  • All who stayed agreed that it was an incredibly comfortable, warm and inviting space. Excellent! Darlene was also very easy and great to communicate with.

    Alex2019-08-11T00:00:00Z
  • Great little place to stay about an hour out from Snowshoe. Small town and everything closes very early, but the house was a welcome place to stay after trips up to Snowshoe each day. Small restaurant and tavern down the road with good and cheap food/beer.

    Matt2018-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • We felt just like we were at Grandma's house! Beautifully and thoughtfully furnished, with everything we needed to feel cozy and welcomed. Darlene is a wonderful hostess.

    Susie2018-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • This was a great place to stay for our weekend retreat to Snowshoe Mountain. The mountain was only a little over an hour away. The home was very spacious and welcoming. The town itself is very small, but cute and friendly. Big Fish Cider Co. is in walking distance and is 100% worth the stop, but please know, they close at 7pm. Also, Hull's Hideaway Restaurant & Tavern was in walking distance had great inexpensive food, they also close at 8pm. Dollar General is right across from the house if you left anything at home and they're open until 10pm. Be sure to bring board games and cards with you if you plan to have a late night! :)

    Brittany2018-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Charming home with good size bedrooms. Easy access to downtown Monterey and convenient to buy forgotten item just across the street at dollar general.

The primitive "Bird Hollow Cabin" is a one room antique oak log cabin located on 25 acres in a beautiful mountain hollow of rhododendrons in western Highland County. Less than 1 hour from Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort, the 10' x 16' Cabin sits next to a pure mountain stream called "Bird Run" which is fed by springs from the George Washington National Forest that joins the property. Enjoy the view and sound of the stream while rocking on the front porch, and build a fire in the fire ring.
Bedding IS NOT provided for the Full Size Bed, except for pillows, a fitted mattress pad and bottom sheet, so bring plenty of blankets or sleeping bags. The Cabin has a 2 burner Coleman Stove, a Propane Heater (propane and dishes are provided), and a Camper Style Chemically Treated Porta Potti. There is No Electricity so bring flashlights or a bright LED lantern. A headlamp can be extremely handy making it a hands-free light. Some candles are provided, or you may bring a small generator, cords and lights if you wish. There is No Plumbing, but water from the spring fed mountain stream can be used for drinking, or heated for cooking and a birdbath...Bring Your Own Toiletries...plus washcloth, small towel, etc.... this is not a Holiday Inn Express.
Highland County is very remote with a population of black angus and sheep that are probably 50 fold the human population of about 2,300 and the scenery is spectacular. It is home of the Southern Most Maple Festival during the 2nd and 3rd weekends of March. Enjoy hiking, fishing, hunting, mountain biking or just go for a drive.
  • Steve's Place is wonderful! The "no cell phone service" is honestly a dream. Sleeping in the cabin with the windows cracked and hearing nothing but the babbling creek was so relaxing. We so enjoyed sitting by the fire, making smores, roasting hot dogs, stargazing, basically pretending we were back at Scout Camp, haha. The cabin itself was clean and neat, even cuter than the pictures--came with much more supplies than we expected! A kettle, candles, matches, pots and pans, and paper towels were all a really nice surprise. The heater works VERY well, especially once it's already heated up the cabin once. Definitely recommend using a car with four-wheel drive to get there though, the little road can be a little muddy and tight at times. We had absolutely no issue, but I can see how a lesser car might. I would absolutely recommend this place if you are looking to disconnect for a little while and get out into nature without the distraction of the internet!

    Bridget2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Great cabin with an amazing location. So peaceful and exactly what I was looking for to escape the busy life.

    Paul2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful and secluded cabin stay for the weekend. Halfway between camping and hotel in this beautiful log cabin right on the edge of the national forest.

    Cason2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • Steve was an excellent host, the cabin was beautiful and what I expected and the views was nice, as well.

    Melissa2020-01-12T00:00:00Z
  • Staying at Steve’s place was just what I needed. The property is absolutely beautiful. If you lead a busy life and need a moment to clear your head and find some peace, this is definitely the place to do that. Steve is a great host, he’s helpful and is a clear communicator. Would highly recommend & plan on staying again.

    Charles2019-11-28T00:00:00Z
  • Steve's place was awesome, and Steve was very welcoming and a great host. Definitely plan to book with him again.

    John2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We had an amazing, rejuvenating time at this cabin. As described, this is a primitive cabin - a nice step up from camping in that you have a composting toilet, and a heater. However, be prepared to spend a lot of time outdoors, and bring appropriate foods to cook! This was perfect for us, and exactly what we wanted. The solitude and silence was an amazing change of pace. The cabin was extremely clean and organized when we arrived, and Steve greeted us with some water as well, since the spring was low. We did bring two gallons of drinking water just in case, which did us well. There is NO cell service - zero, zip, nada. Which we thoroughly enjoyed. However, if you plan to hike around the property dress accordingly and I'd recommend bringing a compass (and know how to use it). We made it to the cabin okay in our prius, however next time (because we plan to return!) we will bring our 4WD vehicle that has more clearance from the ground. Thanks so much for the wonderful trip!

    Kate2019-10-20T00:00:00Z
  • Was absolutely amazing and 100% accurate to it's description. Steve is an amazing and thoughtful host. Everything that is needed is supplied and he even brought down some wood to help us start a fire. This is a fantastic place to step out of day to day life and relax in a quiet, serene area and a great place to go hiking. Cannot wait to visit again

  • The Wilson House is somewhere our family has gone for years! It’s amazingly stunning views and relaxing nature of the area really allows you to unplug! The house is always sparkling clean, the amenities around the house always functional, we love learning different things each time we come up! The locals are fantastic, it’s so relaxing and laid back! You won’t be disappointed, we’ve been with just a group of adults or most recently with our twin 5 year old kiddos!

    Patricia2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • The setting is lovely, the house is a gem, and we enjoyed our stay immensely! Monterey is a charming town and the countryside is serene. Thank you for a real change of pace!

    Carol2019-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • The Wilson House was an absolutely terrific place. A historic home with, that was absolutely spotless with tons of extra touches that made it our most relaxing getaway this year. I just can’t stress how immaculate the place was. It was so quiet and relaxing and Mary has thought about every little thing you might need to make your stay wonderful. We will be back!!

    Eli2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely quaint space, large bedrooms. Enjoyed walking down the driveway past the cows and picking apples on our way to the neighbor's farm and pond where they graciously let our kids enjoy some "fishing". Bought eggs and maple syrup at the farmer's market and had a (slow) dinner at High's (we were a big group though). Slept with the windows open and enjoyed the nice breeze. Firepit under the stars, enough room for little ones to get outside and run their energy off. Inspires nostalgia for a simpler time, was a great getaway from the ratrace we cityfolk all are in. This house has all amenities you would need. Plenty of towels which was great (some rentals are very stingy with towels!) Mary accommodated a late checkout which allowed us to fish in the morning and then eat lunch before getting on the road.

    Kim&Ryan2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • The Wilson House is beautifully situated and was very comfortable for a group of five friends staying for a long weekend! Looking forward to next time...

    Jenny2019-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • The Wilson House was the perfect headquarters for my extended family of 8 adults. From the porch we saw a redheaded woodpecker, a flicker and chipmunks and a bald eagle flying up the valley. The accommodations were perfect, and the house is so clean and organized. We look forward to taking friends from Richmond to the Wilson House in the future.

    Bruce2019-06-23T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean , beautiful views, quaint, easy to find, homey

    Becky2019-03-17T00:00:00Z
  • The Wilson House is awesome! The views of the mountain range and valley is like a picture post card! The home has that “over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go” feeling. The hardwood floors, oldtime kitchen and pantry, and antiques here and there take you back to a simpler time...a time this world needs to get back to. That said, The Wilson House has everything you need for a delightful stay in the country/ mountains. Our experience included snow for sledding in between trips to Monterey for the Maple Festival. The beds are super comfortable and the sheets and bedcoverings all smelled freshly done, as did the towels and cloths. Housekeeping does an amazing job and this place fairly sparkled, top to bottom. Everything is very well appointed in the kitchen for cooking and a delight to prepare in. My husband and I and our three grandchildren loved the house and will definitely stay again. If this house could talk I’m sure it would share a lot of great memories and this weekend we just added some more. Blessings and Many thanks Mary! The Sandridge’s

  • This is a quintessential cabin getaway. It's remote, it's rustic, it's cozy. We loved having the cows for neighbors. The sound of the river is wonderful. Highly recommended for a quiet place to relax!

    Jessie2019-12-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great location, great little cabin, fantastic fire pits. We had a great weekend getaway!

    Ivan2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful secluded cabin right on the creek. Bring water shoes because creek is great fun to walk in, albeit cold! We went fishing and caught rainbow trout and our kids had fun playing in the water which was not deep (they are 6&8yo). Rocks are slippery! Tons of wood for a bonfire. I’d suggest camping chairs because hand built chairs around bonfire are not very comfortable (but they look cool because they are handmade). Bed was super comfortable. Place was clean and plenty of kitchen supplies. Two full baths were great but they do not provide soap in shower. Upstairs loft was nice but hot. Great for kids to go watch tv in the morning so adults could sleep in. Loft not recommended for little kids because of steep stairs. This cabin is perfect for those wanting to step away from modern life and slow down a bit.

    Sarah2019-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is FANTASTIC. It was everything and more that we needed for a relaxing mini spring break vacation. Our kids liked walking in the creek and throwing rocks in the water. My husband loved laying in the hammock by the water. And I loved taking dozens of pictures and rocking on the porch. We can’t wait to come back when the weather is warmer!!

    Ashley2019-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • The house was great! And the land and creek were awesome even in the snow! Location couldn’t be better for exploring the maple festival and highland county.

  • Great little place, right on the river/creek, to escape real life for a few days!

    Jason2019-02-24T00:00:00Z
  • We really had a great time this past weekend, probably one of the best we have had in a while. We cannot wait to stay again some time soon. The cabin is literally our dream home and it was hard having to leave and head back to Hampton, VA. The cabin has all of the essentials you need and then some. If you are looking for solitude and nature, then this is your place.

Our home is one of 4 current family houses on an active working farm that has been in operation since the late 18th century. The home is rich in history but recent renovations make it quite comfortable. The large patio is perfect for watching the sunset over Jack Mountain or the moon rise over the Bullpasture. Clear nights are great for stargazing. Even though your cell phone won't work there is always something to do on the farm, or local outdoor attractions are not far away.
Early 20th century farm house, located on a working farm in the remote confines of Highland County. Replete with original hardwood floors and paneling, the beautiful space has two newly remodeled bathrooms and a kitchen. Sleeps eight comfortably! No phone or internet service and cell phone coverage is not available. Emergency contact is available in the home next door, along with WiFi if desired.
  • It a very great place. The house is cozy. Adam is nice and very easy to communicate. We have a nice time there!

  • Telescope nerds, this place is a must-stay. We booked this place for the dark night skies and the sheer number of stars here knocked our socks off. We brought our whole setup - a telescope with a camera mounted to it and an extension cord to run from the house. Worked well! The house is a quiet beauty and is steeped in family history. With all the books, games, farm animals and hiking available, it was so nice to get off the grid for a bit. Beds were warm and comfortable! Thanks to our hosts for sharing your space with us. Hope to be back soon!

    Sarah2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • We truly enjoyed our peaceful stay on this large and beautiful property. The starry night sky was beautiful, as were the hills and streams running through the landscape. The sheep, cows and border collie were all welcome presences, while the house itself was spacious and well-maintained. Will plan to stay again!

    Kevin Douglas2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • A beautiful, secluded little house with lots of character. We really enjoyed the cabin-feel of the house. The entire atmosphere of the house felt cozy and relaxed. Seeing sheep and horses outside the next day was an added bonus!

    Abby2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • This place is just beautiful! Everything about it makes it truly unique and its really a sight to see the stars and sky at night! We sat outside for a good while just gazing! We had snowfall and it was all of our families first time seeing snow! Let’s also add to the magic that when we looked down at the steps, there were deer footprints 😂 Santa left a little gift for the kids before our departure back to Miami. More about the place, just make sure to make your grocery stop before heading here, but everything you need is already there for cooking since the closest town is a bit ways away but not biggie if you know this before coming, the no wifi was actually a refresher for our family. There is an option for it.. but we opted to be without and watch some childhood movies and family games they had on hand as well. We will be coming back again hopefully! Thank you!

    Kenia2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great weekend and we felt at home in this very unique farm house which was a very untypical place to stay for the French travelers that we are! We enjoyed being surrounding by nature, being cut out from the world and experiencing a part of the past in this 18th century home. We would definitely come back for a future trip!

    Clara2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • We came to see the beautiful foliage and milky way, and both the goals were well completed. The host are really nice people from the mountain, we really love to stay here. It's such a pity that our car had a problem and we have to end the trip early, other than that it's such a beautiful place to spend the fall . Definitely the place you should come and see in your life, for both the people and the view. a big thumb up!

  • This is a wonderful old farmhouse that has been updated and added on. There are nice sized rooms and unique architectural touches. If you love old houses, as I do, this is a wonderful place. The tiny community of Head Waters is about 30 minutes from the small town of Monterey Virginia. The setting is beautiful but the travel is through mountainous terrain. Caution should be exercised if not familiar with the area, especially during inclement weather. Highland County is one of the most picturesque locations in Virginia.

Some of the best trout fishing can be accessed within a short drive. National forest is not too far away. Bath county has many lakes to be enjoyed. Lake Moomaw is not too far away. Highland is known for its annual maple festival that happens each winter. Tour maple syrup production camps throughout the county. One right next door, Duffs Sugar Camp. Mr. Duff embraces state of art technology for the late 1800's. Making maple duty as it was over 100 years ago! His apple butter and maple syrup is delicious! The fall brings amazing leaf colors. The sugar maples are brilliant. Snow Shoe Ski Resort is not too far. A great family day trip would be visiting Cass Railroad Park in Cass, WV. A favorite of ours is the Williamsville Trout Hatchery. Open from 9-3pm daily. It is very cool to see how the trout are raised! Highland is a wonderful getaway!
  • Amazing cottage!! Better than the pics even express. Llamas were right in our yard!! So amazing!! Cows... sheep... all just footsteps away. We arrived late at night when it was dark and I was concerned with the fact that there were no curtains... but do not be concerned!! When we woke up the next morning in the day light, we totally got it! AMAZING VIEWS!!! The best EVER!! And no neighbors!! No need for curtains. We will revisit over & over. Best Air B&B ever. Hands down.

    Steven2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • If you're looking to disconnect and enjoy the beauty of nature you MUST stay at this cottage. Kevin & Emily offer an incredible experience where we tasted fresh maple syrup and were able to visit the farm animals (alpacas, sheep, chickens, and turkeys to name a few ). We cannot express enough how amazing our trip was!

    Christina2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • K & E’s cottage totally exceeded our expectations. the views are breathtaking! we genuinely did not want to leave, even for the things we had planned. The maple syrup is amazing and the animals are right outside your door! we will remember this trip and cottage for a lifetime.

  • This was a great place to spend a quiet, unplugged weekend. The pictures on the website don’t do it justice! Beautiful animals and tasty maple syrup.

  • I cannot say enough about hospitality and how amazing our stay was. The place is pure serenity. The best view from each window in the house! When you are making your coffee, you can see alpacas graze peacefully right in front of the windows. If you need to take a break from busy city life and get some inspiration - this is your place! The house is clean and stylish - you will find everything that you need. We will definitely come back here again!

    Elena2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • Mill Gap Farms offers a beautiful and calm getaway surrounded by rolling hills, mountains, and cute farm animals. Typically when we book we want to feel completely isolated. Even though Kevin's house was maybe 500 feet away we felt solitude and within our own space. The whom trip was absolutely relaxing and great to be "away from it all". The views are unbeatable. The main negatives were that they had no wifi. Don't get me wrong I love being out of the grid, but we love to hike and venture outside of the area when exploring air bnbs. Having no wifi made it a bit difficult to navigate and find places to visit. At the same time though it was amazing forced not to even bother checking my phone. 2nd was the bed was small and a spring bed so not the most comfortable. Other than that the stay was incredible and we plan on going sometime next Fall.

    Luis Abel2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at the cottage was great! Such a relaxing and peaceful time. There is a great view from every window in the cottage. We were able to see some of the mischievous alpacas and hens that escaped their pasture to graze through the kitchen window. The cottage is stocked with all the essentials. K&E were very welcoming and let us feed the baby alpaca and gave us a tour of their maple syrup production. Such a great time! We highly recommend the cottage!

  • Beautiful home on spacious forested farmland. WiFi had streaming-strength speeds. Nice cozy gas fireplace. Great big wall perfect for a projector, because there's no tv. Kitchen is well equipped and the bathrooms and bedrooms are great for just a couple or friends & family to enjoy. Highly recommend a visit!

  • We were only here briefly so unfortunately didn’t get to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, but our stay went perfectly with no problems. We enjoyed the minimalist rustic style of the place and had plenty of space to spread out and enjoy. We loved the grass fed beef in the freezer. The area was totally dark at night, and the stars were beautiful.

    Lyons2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing with nice touches and homey feeling. Close to hiking, beautiful views (especially this time of year) and we really enjoyed time with our kids with no cell phones and TV. Thank you to our great hosts.

  • A perfect place to rest and recuperate. Durwood’s hospitality is definitely felt in many different touches at the house. It is so cozy and spacious and looks out at the beautiful Washington national park. My husband and I went to rest and we did just that! It was wonderful!

  • Perfectly peaceful! We had the pleasure of staying here for a weekend away and it was delightful! The home is incredibly warm and inviting, with all sorts of extra touches. The hosts are the kindest people and were quick to answer any questions and provided tons of helpful information about area hiking and exploring. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen had everything you could need. But, by far, my favorite feature is the location. Coffee on either porch is the perfect way to unplug and relax. My children and I loved exploring the land around the property and had a wonderful adventure. I cannot wait to come back!

  • My friends and I had a really great weekend. We go on trips to somewhere in the mountains at least once a year and this was by far the best. The property was absolutely breathtaking and surrounding Highland County is worth the drive. The cabin was clean and cozy-we had fires both nights and stayed nice and warm despite the freezing temperatures outside. Our dogs came and they loved running around the yard. The kitchen was great and we were able to comfortably cook all our meals. Steve was very kind and responsive. Couldn’t have asked for a better mountain getaway!

Imagine walking into a postcard and you will have an idea what it is like to stay at South Branch Farm. No joke - our Farm is the backdrop for a postcard sold in local shops for over 50 years! The home is a fully modernized 4 bedroom farmhouse perfect for a family vacation or a weekend getaway, surrounded by 45 acres of private land and a mile and a half nature trail maintained for our guests. Get ready to breathe in the country air and go for a hike or just kick back on the spacious deck.
South Brach Farm takes its name from the headwaters of the South Branch of the Potomac River which flows through the front of this unique 45 acre property.
Highland County and the Blue Grass Valley are what most people think of when they imagine the Shenandoah Valley (before larger cities along the Route 81 corridor were developed). Almost like stepping back in time (but with modern amenities).
  • It's really a good place to stay and relax and enjoying the nature.

  • Home away from home, in the midst of one of America's most beautiful valleys (in our opinion at least!). The farmhouse is well sized for six adults or a family, with a fantastic annex bedroom off the upstairs masters for kids. As expected, the house is not city modern, but that's not why one would go to scenic WV. Grounds can entertain kids and adults alike for hours of walking and being outside, while half day trips include the Green Bank Radio Telescope and both the Cass and Durbin Steam Railway excursions (book ahead!). Monterey has a couple of good places to eat - we went to the Highland Inn and had a homely dinner in a lovely period property. Oh, and the house wifi works just fine (don't expect fast, but it worked) in an area where cell phone is extremely limited.

  • The fellows (students) and personnel at the Lodge are the nicest and friendliest folks around. They answered any questions we had about the institute, the food, their experiences. WE enjoyed doing a bit of work in the garden and getting to eat their delicious and well prepared food. The place is off the beaten track, which is just what we wanted and the views are stunning. I know I will be back someday.

  • Had a lovely stay. Friendly folk. Enjoyed farm tour. Appreciated recommendations for places to check out, things to do. We wish the Fellows the best in their future endeavors. Expecting great things from these young folk, who, to their credit, are learning essential skills that, alas, many of us have lost in the past few generations. Wish many more of us would learn to live healthfully and farm sustainably, as these young’uns are doing. What an example they are to us! Rough dirt road. Prius made it, but, if you’re from the city, be prepared for something close to off road driving, especially after rain.

AMI's farm includes a rustic, spacious Lodge and Fellow cabins, organic gardens and botanically-rich fields and forests. Chickens, cows, and bees are on the Farm below the Lodge. Guests are invited to stay in upstairs of the Lodge, which include four guest bedrooms and two private bathrooms (available to rent in a variety of configurations).
Allegheny Mountain Institute’s home is located in Hightown, Virginia, United States. The farm is located in an incredibly beautiful and remote setting, adjoining both the George Washington and Monongahela National Forests. It is a 30-minute drive from Monterey, VA and is also nearby to West Virginia attractions such as the Green Bank observatory, Cass Scenic Railroad and Snowshoe Resort. The area is a haven for birders, mushroom and wild edible foragers, spelunkers, rock climbers, herbalists, mountain bikers, astronomers and any one looking for relaxation and inspiration. A calendar of local events and activities in this vibrant Appalachian region is available to all guests.
  • The view from the room we were in allowed is to see the sunrise and at night the stars. We were graciously received by the interns and were able to walk the farm and ask any questions we had. We also took a composting course which was very informative with important information. The property is expansive and very walkable with lots of open space, stunning views, interesting plants and trees. The air was clear and fresh. Very rejuvenating.

  • My mom and I had a wonderful time at Eagle Annie’s! It was such a nice, relaxing retreat. Patti was so nice in offering us local tips on what to see and do in the area. Highland County is a beautiful area of Virginia with its rolling hills, wildlife, and cute small towns. We enjoyed sitting on the back deck of the cottage and having our morning coffee while listening to the birds. It was very relaxing and we’d definitely like to visit again.

  • Eagle Annie’s cottage is a beautiful rustic cottage situated in Highland County, VA (also known as Virginia’s Little Switzerland). Beds are clean and comfortable and the kitchen is fully stocked for cooking. Ms. Patti is a wonderful hostess!

  • We had a fantastic time staying at Patti's cottage. This place is amazing and has such history behind it. We bike a lot of roads in Virginia, and by far Blue Grass Valley Road is the prettiest of them all. The views are magnificent. There is very low traffic in the area so it is very walkable and bikeable. Just a great place to go to get away from it all. We also enjoyed watcing all of Patti's hummingbird friends.

  • I decided at the last moment to get away from the heat of Charlottesville and Central Virginia to the cool mountains of Highland County. I stayed 3 nights at the cottage in beautiful Blue Grass Valley. This is a very welcoming place. Hostess Patty knew so much about the area and was willing to share her knowledge about local places to see and restaurants nearby. She was super friendly yet also knows that guests desire privacy. Patty loves to garden and has a wonderful vegetable and herb garden which she was kind to share. Her Cottage is adorable very clean and very well equipped with everything I needed.   Temperatures were about 15 degrees cooler than Central Virginia.  It's was a peaceful escape. I hope to return in the fall to see more of Highland County and stay at this wonderful Cottage again.
