An oral tradition states that the "Alte Burg" was repeatedly used as a refuge for the famous pirate Klaus Störtebecker. During the Störtebecker period, the Great Inland Sea had a passage to the Baltic Sea, the "Strom" (that is still the name of the deeply situated quarry forest in front of Hohwacht). This driveway gradually silted up and was forgotten by the merchants, but not by the pirates. Their shelter was on the north side of the "old castle".
